GWAR founding member and vocalist Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus, has posted the following statement online regarding the passing of GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot.
"It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their longtime guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR's current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long-term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him."
Cory Smoot handled production duties on Gwar's latest two albums "Lust In Space" and "Bloody Pit of Horror." He also owned and operated his own recording studio, Karma Studios, where several of GWAR's albums had been recorded.
All staff at Metalunderground.com offer our condolences to the Smoot family.

I just saw him a month ago. Mensrea played a surprise hometown gig in Toledo. They were great...he looked fine...totally beside myself right now for a dear friend and a great band. RIP Cory. Without you, War Party would have never happened. Man. f***. This sucks.
#30; When I interviewed Dave/Oderus before their show here in Vancouver last year he claimed that the band loved Canada, especially the west coast. He said they always sell their gigs out in Canada and never have to worry about if people are going to show up. He seemed to know ALOT about Canada as well, seeing as how he is actually...Canadian. Born in Ottawa!
Great band, great guy and from the few short minutes I got to speak with Cory a real down to earth dude as well. He will be missed by many.
This really sucks about Cory. I was at the Indianapolis show 3 days before doing photos and a review. Hard to believe they're some of the last pictures ever taken of him. Here's the link if anyone cares to see the pictures or read the review:

To be honest I never really listened to GWAR. Though, to loose another musician, a musician who seemed to have a HUGE impact on the world sucks. I wish the best for him in the after life and in the next.
My thoughts and condolences go out to the band and to his family.
May Corey rest in peace!
This is so tragic. The guys in GWAR passed out Missing Person fliers for a friend of mine on their North America tour last year and we got to meet all the fellas back stage. Each and every one of the guys was sincerely sweet and concerned. Cory even have me a little hug.
He will me missed by all who love GWAR, but he will also be missed by Kellie Hall's friends and family for being such a nice compassionate guy.
Thank you.
