Jon Howard of Threat Signal Discusses New Album, Touring Plans and Occupy Wall Street

Influencing but not part pf the new djent movement, Threat Signal is poised to be one of the biggest metal bands of the 2010s. Hailing from the Toronto area and led by Jon Howard, the band has been making music since 2004 and opened for such big names as Dark Tranquility and Epica. Jon was able to talk with me about upcoming plans, his side project and his recommendations for documentaries.

Matt Dasher: Do you consider Threat Signal to be djent or not?

Jon Howard: I personally don't, but someone else might. We were playing similar music back before they made up the name Djent. I personally think the term is fuckin' lame.

Matt Dasher: What's Arkaea up to?

Jon Howard: We've been speaking about writing a new record, but we haven't been able to set aside the time yet. I really hope we can, that was a fun band to work with.

Matt Dasher: A lot of your lyrics on the new album have a strong anti-authoritarian slant to them. Is Threat Signal a political band? If so, what do you think of the Arab Spring and Occupy protests?

Jon Howard: Threat Signal warns you about the bullshit going on in this world and we stand up for what's right political or not. I believe when a mass amount of people decide to protest, there is obviously a problem that needs to be recognized. I am not educated well enough about the Arab Spring protests to comment, however I firmly agree with the occupy protests. I think its very unfair for the 1% to manipulate the financial market for personal financial gain at the expense of the general public. If you haven't, please watch the documentary Inside Job to gain further knowledge of the debt crisis.

Matt Dasher: Are there any plans to tour for the new album?

Jon Howard: Touring plans are in the works. Nothing is set in stone yet, however we've got some big ideas for North America and Europe.

Matt Dasher: Most of the Canadian metal bands that I know of are from either Vancouver or Montreal. What are some of your recommendations for bands from the Toronto area?

Jon Howard: Check out Baptized In Blood from London Ontario, SICK band. Also don't forget about Kittie, they are still shredding.

Love these guys, and nice nuggets here, but did Jon scurry away to shut off his car alarm or something?
