I don't get this album, I really don't.
And, when you think of it, it's not like the entire project was doomed from the start.
When you listen to some of the Velvet Underground or Lou Reed's solo stuff, lots of it would work well with heavier guitars or Metallica.
Anyone who doesn't agree with me, let me know. I'll throw some examples in.
Now, the albums sounds like a piece of sh**.
But you know, even if Metallica and Lou Reed would agree it turned out to be sh**, they of course couldn't say it. They just have to suck it up, cos this project's become so public, plus Q Prime and Warners WANT the album so bad their mouths are foaming.
Metallica isn't Nine Inch Nails, with full control over their doings.
Remember the NIN / Tom Morello project? Trent and Tom didn't like the way it turned out, so they didn't release it. Simple.
Metallica is in a different boat. And the Captains are Q Prime and Warner Bros.
I'm currently in the middle of the second to last track, Dragon, forcing myself to listen to it in its entirety.
It's just a collection of aimless jams with Lou singing/talking over top of it. Hetfields' best background vocals are on the view. The rest of Hetfields' vocal contribution is cringe-worthy. Sometimes his voice cracks when he hits the higher notes. Lou's voice isn't any better. Warbling is the word that best fits it.
The repetitive and quasi-intellectual lyrics and delivery could have been summed up within 30minutes, instead of stretching it out almost 3x that amount.
The album length requires a double CD, but there are only a dozen or so different riffs filling that span. The guitar rhythms go nowhere, just repeat ad nauseum.
The few guitar solos present don't accomplish much in the way of advancing the song. Hammett mainly uses his role to provide some atmospheric noises. It helps, but it still is polishing a turd. I've already spoken in other related threads about Lars' performance here. My assessment hasn't changed after hearing the full thing. I can only imagine poor Robert wondering what the fvck he got himself into. He was probably like, "Could you bring my bass down just a bit in the mix?... a little more.... a bit more.... more still... almost there... a touch more... good. completely inaudible.. perfect."
The thing of this is, if you take the 'tallica' name (and Lou Reeds name) off of this, does it hold up at all? I don't think it does. It doesn't matter whether or not Metallica or Lou Reed is associated with this. Its just crap. From a concept standpoint, the idea has merit, but the execution completely fails. This sucks... regardless of who's name is on it. Having their names on it only make it worse, due to the failed potential.
I stand by my correlation in this thread.

Wow, Metallica might as-well duo with Tay Zonday and make Chocolate Rain album, put -tallica on the end of it, and expect it be good. Just awful an awful collaboration, and I feel sorry for anyone who pre-ordered this looking for Metallica, because it's just not Metallica anymore.
did pre order the thing till so far dontknow what to think
wolf ir right do think we miss the big picture
if we look at it really its not a metallica album
just a project and indeed there is lots of money involved
q prime just want to make money
but hey its still a sh**ty project i do think they should had put a metallica twist to it
people we do haveto admit we sort of living in the past hopping it woild be a heavy album
still it makes me sick if i lissen to lou reed never liked him or his music
THIS IS sh**, HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS SUCH, AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED AS SUCH. THERE IS NO ARGUMENT, CONTRADICTION, OR BIAS OPINION TO STATE OTHERWISE. f*** THESE ANCIENT AND DEAF f*** STAINS , AND LET'S ALL CRANK "FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE" IN RETRIBUTION.
I keep fighting this urge to delete their entire discography off my computer, cuz everytime now a metallica song comes on i press next. All i keep hearing is lulu's voice overtop master of puppets, so i warn u all, do NOT listen to the whole album as i have for it WILL ruin ur enjoyment of the old metallica.
^brother Bam, that happened to me a LONG fvcking time ago....there was this prima donna, 'revolutionary' thing called the 'Black Album" back in oh 90-91 or so eh...THE biggest disappointment of a record I have EVER experienced
well, then along came Pantera, and all was well once again
EVERYTHING sh!tallica has produced since Justice represents a startling regression...I never expected such a dire turn of direction toward commercialist fodder after seeing 'Damaged Justice' with Queensryche opening...it was fvcking devastating to hear Enter frikken Sandbag on people's fvcking RADIO after the release of what SHOULD have been the fvcking definitive thrash record of the century
Metallica has been dead to me for over 20 fvckin years....I look at this fvcking garbage just for guaranteed chuckles, as evrything has a brand-specific clownish element to it, which is always quite laughable anyway...in this case, sardonically :)
And hey, all you fvcks givin Wilco sh!t, chill the fvck out eh? You don't know who the fvck you're talking to...the Flying Dutchman has been down with METAL since before the lot of ya was born, so use some goddamned etiquette

What I really look forward to is:
1. What the reviewers are going to say.
I can see it happening: The Rolling Stone magazine: "4/5 stars. LIVING LEGENDS TOGETHER - making amazing music!" etc etc
2. Sales. Will be interesting to see how this album does.
This album should be a great way to ballpark where the music industry Really is at these days.
S**t man I can not believe what I have just heard. This has to be the worst s**t anyone can produce. I think my 3 year old boy could do heaps better writing lyrics and singing/spoken word. As posted by Medve your right Lars should not have to worry about the downloads for this one. No one downlaods s**t like this.
I tried listening to this piece of crap but had to stop during the third song.
It's as some Finnish music reporter said: the two most hated albums of 2003 were "St. Anger" and Reed's "The Raven". And now we can all hear how it would sound like if they were played on top of each other.
I agree with Hellrat.
I got into Met. with Lightning.
Puppets destroyed all and so did Justice.
Then came........gasp......the black album.
I know a lot of people like that album and taken for what it is........there are a lot of good songs on it.......but it's not Metallica.
That album is where all the jocks got into them and I dumped them.
A heavier version of Poison.
The makeup....check.
The trendy hair do's....check.
The money...check.
Drugs.
Women.
Stupid videos.
Endless mechandising.
NAPSTER.
LAWSUITS.
OLD GRANNY'S GETTING SUED.
GREED.
MORE HAIR SPRAY.
CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!!!!!!
Metalli posers.
Wolfs right,Rolling Stone gives this nightmare 5 stars! This fvcker sells a hundred fifty thou first week i think. Mostly in "red states" . The Metallica brand is bigger than you think! Id personally listen to Morbid Angels latest on continuous loop, than hear LuLu! I couldnt stomach an entire song! And im a Metallica fan,ill admit. We are running out of negativez words to desribe this atrocity. NP: Metallica/ For Whom the Bell Tolls
thanks hellratt for backing me up
anyway dont delete the compleet colection on your machine
they did make some good music big mistake i do think was working with bob rock
and lissening to the old dude from q prime
nowa days they decide not metallica
if you look at it same sh** happend to the lameass rolling stones
we all have to admit that we are stuck in the past
looking at kill or ride or mop they did move on and got greedy on the way do think its a shame
thinking more about money tham your music you need to make
indeed the lulu project sucks donkey balls
and they say its just a project but still you ar eone of the biggest metal bands around so at least make a good side project not with that lame a$$ lou reed
they should have done something with john olivia or ozzy
but still did we hear the compleet album ? no so i will buy it and give it a change
hope i dont burn my hands on it its just 20 us
but before we go anyfurhter look at queensryche now they di make the sh** album of 2011 do think and on this part i regret spending money
on the end we can not blaim kirk or rob tye have no saying in the matter they only collect a fat paycheck
*Here comes the inevitable*
I decided to listen to the album for myself so I knew exactly what I was slagging off and honestly, I don't think it's that bad. It's not great by any stetch of the imagination, I don't think I'd even go so far as to call it good, but it's pretty much what I was expecting from Lou Reed. It's avant guarde with heavier sounding guitars. I won't be buying it, it's not amazing, but I found that once I completely seperated the name Metallica from the record and looked it as a Lou Reed album, I was able to tolerate it and enjoy it in some places. Be interesting to see how it does commercially.
Hear what your saying wilco. Metallicas become nothing more than a legacy act at this point. I wont hesitate to see them live still, but i stopped holding my breath for great music from them. Death Mag had a few decent songs, but it was just so horribly produced and mixed! They still were great on that tour though with Machine Head, and The Sword. And hey, who's the punk who dares fvck with Wilco? You've been listening to metal 30+ ,fvcker should show some god damned respect!
POLL: What do you think of this LULU album?

I am a big Metallica fan, so I went into this with an open mind. And I came out of it with dissappointment. Reed can't sing and his voice doesn't go well with the band. Kirk is back to not playing solos. The only good parts are when you hear James' voice, which is trampled on by Reed who sounds like a 70 year old man arguing with their bank over the phone.
I decided not to delete the rest of their stuff after all. Even thought they're sh** not, doesnt mean master of puppets is a sh**ty song all the sudden. I don't even have Load, Reload or St. Anger, why should i have this sh**? Death Magnetic was a hope held feebly that Metallica have come around, sadly this isn't true... :(:(:
NP: Hangar 18 - Megadeth
wow! i was figuring that this would be the sort of album you could appreciate/understand better if you got, you know really baked first and plan on listening for an hour.
no...this is awful...this should never see the light of day. seriously, metallica...every band will make a bad record now and again, but this is just pure garbage. by far the worst thing you've ever done
Yo Oz, thanks for putting it like that on post 38. I understand it a little better.
Actually DJ and WOLF in post 3 and 4 really helped me see what this album is and then Oz concluded it perfectly. I'm not going to bother listening to it because I'll definitely take your guys word for it lol.
