Metallica And Lou Reed Talk "Lulu" Album In Rolling Stone Interview

Metallica has teamed up with Lou Reed to release the collaboration album "Lulu" this coming November 1st, 2011. A full song from the album, titled "The View," is available for streaming at this location.

Rolling Stone magazine was in the studio with Metallica and Lou Reed to discuss the upcoming album. Excerpts from the studio interview are available below.

"They're as powerful as you can get," Reed says of Metallica out in the studio lounge. "The drums are no joke, and Hetfield is like that." Reed pounds a hand on his heart. "Then you have lyrics that are high-octane. It's so easy, because we're not trying to change anyone."

"It wasn't 'This is my shit, do as you're told,'" Ulrich confirms. "Lou understood we were going to give him something nobody else would." Co-produced by Reed, Metallica, engineer Greg Fidelman and Reed's longtime collaborator Hal Willner, Lulu "is almost like two languages," Ulrich says. "We have m-e-t-a-l in our name. But we can go fucking anywhere and do anything."

On the phone, a few days after Lulu is mastered, Ulrich describes listening to the album on a late-night car ride. "I was overwhelmed," he confesses. "I also felt, 'This is really unique.'" How unique? He laughs. "This makes... And Justice for All sound like the first Ramones album."

""The drums are no joke"
-YES THEY ARE!!! They're as simple as simple comes!! I CAN DRUM THAT SONG! and THAT'S Saying a lot! I can play basic beats with double kick, and i dont learn something unless i can make it tight. I can play Welcome To Bucketheadland quite well, and tbh, is WAY more technically difficult than the views drumming, by a "legendary" drummer thats all washed up now

"Reed pounds a hand on his heart. (probably does that a lot to check if he's still alive lol) "Then you have lyrics that are high-octane."
- No, they're not. "I am the Table, i am the progress" does translate to high-octane vocals... sub-par at best and most of the time with reeds "vocals" its worse than GAGA!!

"we're not trying to change anyone."
-REALLY?!?!?! After all the buzz over "The View" all negative, ur still trying to brainwash people into thinking this is good music!! u ARE trying to change everyones opinion except your own, that this is WORSE than ST. ANGER!!!

"We have m-e-t-a-l in our name"
-YES! HAVING METAL IN YOUR NAME MAKES U METAL!!! In that case im going to make an rock band called "Eagles of Death Metal" and-- oh wait...

"How unique? He laughs. "This makes... And Justice for All sound like the first Ramones album."
-No wonder it was done over the phone, because if i was the guy on the other end of that conversation, and was right in front of Ulrich, i would have to beat him for speaking such utter stupidity!!! I was laughing, until i read that part... that took me back. THAT was complete BS in high quality, comparing this album to ...AJfA was probably one of the worst comparisons i've ever heard from the mouth of Ulrich... i know that man is completely retarded, but i never though him of stooping THIS low....

Its kind of interesting to watch unfold really. With 'St.Anger' and 'Death Magnetic', Metallica still had a large portion of fans behind them cheering them on. But this Lou Reed collaboration clearly puts Metallicas following (in the blogoshpere at least) almost completely unapparent.

Interesting indeed.

I really don't care that Metallica is gonna come out with a horrible album. There's already plenty of other great releases this year that should outclass Lulu in every way. Dream Theater, Mastodon, Amon Amarth, Scar Symmetry are some great examples imo. Animals as Leaders and Megadeth will be the icing on the cake while Lulu will be the piece that dropped on the floor.

Once upon a time, the Swissyards deemed it pragmatic and fashionable to take measure and record of the biggest dumps on the planet; and so began the formalized investigating...after mush sample and study, it was determined that the Sperm Whale packs a pretty sizable dook, and Elephant lay some mean piles, but that it was Stan's dad Randy in Colorado whom was properly due initial title as to having taken the Biggest Dump in the World, with his successful delivery of a steamy behemoth weighing in at 68.9 kilograms!

By and by, at some later interval, along came an Irish feller by the call of Bo-No, and made precious small welcome of himself among the good folk of the land, with his air of pompous, self-enamoured stink...rumor began to pass, in whisper and in wit, that this Bonbo was in fact a piece of human sh!t.

Well, the Madd Shatters in Swissyard got wind of the Stench, and set out to take stock of this quite sizable sunglassed Turd. After many readings and much careful calculation, the intrepid Fecal Wizards found that Bono WAS in fact the Biggest Dump on the Planet, outweighing Stan's dad's gargantuan load by .7 kilograms!

The proud Irish wouldn't keep the Record long, however, as an American band by the name of Metallica was shamelessly charging forth with reckless abandon, headlong into the decadent Mires of Sh!te. It seemed as though they grew quantifiably sh!ttier with each record, and in time, it was indeed proven that they did actually achieve such exponential graduations into sh**tiness with every floundered effort. Although they came strikingly close to stealing Boner's crown with the blundering, beleaguered, and utterly terrible St. Chunder, it would not be until the 2011 release of the absolute a$$ Spray that is the DuDu collaboration recording, and the accompanying interviews and comments; that Sh!tallica finally claimed long striven, rightful entitlement to being known as The Biggest Pile of Sh!t the World Has Ever Known!!!

And the Record looks safe for now Folks! but remember... Lou Reed is the real Peanut in that Turd, Ladies and Gents ;)

#37: You're a bit late to the game on this site, I'm afraid.
In another thread, we've already beat to death the false argument that greater record $ales = greater talent. That false assumption holds even less water within the metal genre.
Regarding your associations to capitalism and America, I also disagree.
First, America is a mixed economy and not purely a capitalist country. Americas' economy is directed by both the public and private sector.
Second, capitalism is simply about putting the control of production into privately owned entities. These entities (corporations, businesses, industries, etc) try to get the most bang for their buck and maximize their revenue. Music is an art form and largely falls outside those bounds. The majority of musicians create their 'product' primarily for artistic goals. The revenue is desirable, but secondary motivation.
If you're arguing that Metallica is capitalist, then you're reinforcing the reason many on here have turned sour on Metallica. The greed of Metallicorp has overshadowed their desire to be artistic. Yet, this collaboration speaks clearly to the contrary. I applaud the bands' motives for working with Lou Reed, but I am terribly disappointed in the quality of the product thus far.
Your argument misses the mark with its false assumptions and poor connections. Non sequitur indeed.

This does allow a bit of artistic license with record companies, but we, as metal fans, should not accept any tripe they dish out. I will not excuse bad music because an artist released a good album a few years back. Call it disrespect if you wish but I refuse to back a losing horse when there are better runners on the track. This is not disrespect as much as natural selection. Music evolves, artists keep up or fall by the wayside. Hell, think I'll pop on Master of Puppets right now and listen to the monster of a band Metallica USED to be. I wish them luck with Lulu, but I won't be on board.

Fully agreed. Like a wise artist once said "you're only as good as the piece of art you just complited".
Very much so.

For years I've been expecting Metallica to somehow "come back", but now I gotta finally let go of one of the dearest bands of my youth and focus on my Lighting/Master/Justice albums.

Looking at big bands and why they continue:

Take the Rolling Stones for instant.
Ok, true, their latest albums don't match up to their classics, but my god, do those guys still have it! The FIRE is still there and the old ones sound better than they ever did! Prove me wrong on this, thank you very much.

Metallica? Hetfield has lost his voice and fire, Lars sounds like he's about to have a heart attack and compared to what his drumming used to be, let's be honest guys, he's terrible now. Can hardly stay in tempo.
Kirk and Rob are just in it for the ride. Or that's how it sounds.

I honestly don't understand is why did this Lou Reed / Metallica have to be an album? Why not just do a project of 4-6 songs and simply punch it on the net for free?

OPS! Sorry. "Net" and "Free" cannot be associated with Metallica. I apologise.
Hopefully other points in my post made some sense.

THANK YOU!! Find one live video from the past 5 years where Lars CONVINCINGLY pulls off a song from their 80's material. They don't exist. Saw some youtube of Dyers' Eve and he didn't even use the double bass. WTF?

The last 11 comments are an adventure to read. And I was just listening to Bloodsimple the other day heh heh.

Anyway, this has only been one song off this album we've heard. I'm not expecting anything great in the least with this but I'll listen to some samples when the album drops and see how bad it actually is. It's sad that I literally have no hope for this band. I could even have hope Guns & Roses would get better before Metallica......

As for the "Dan Brown" who posted 59-61, I think I'll have to vote the comment number 61 as "the best of 2011". So far, that is.

Listen to the first few Vision of Disorder albums with Tim Williams, great stuff! Believe they are from your neck of the woods,LI. Overlooked and under rated band imo.

So after their idiot statements are ripped apart, then they usually make spam posts with dumbass names like JustinBieberOWnZZ!@# and all they can do is say "you prolly listen to Lady GaGa" lol

Just another reason i love this site! Guys keep rippin these idiots apart! \m/

I love how all the douche bags come out and bash 5 min of an 80 min CONCEPT ALBUM!!! the tone of this song is probably meant to be tedious and mundane. The drop in an ocean, the entire album is like one song that obviously is going to change tempo and style throughout. I mean come on, have you listened to punk opera before? Kind of like what Greenday did with American idiot. Or what Linkin Park did with their newest album, or what every prog metal band has ever done. You can't judge the album on what you've heard so far. Get your head out of your asses, and just remember that they made this in the spam of a month, and it's only a side project. I'd like to see one of you guys come out with something decent, oh wait, you'd have contracts if you did.

Keep in mind I think the track is a bit hard to listen to, but I haven't judged it yet, cause I've done the research to know that there is more to this than we are getting. Be patient.

Let the hate begin!! Lol

Sorry, I don't listen to Greenday or Lincoln Park. Did I spell that correctly? So I guess I'm not qualified to judge a Metallica collaboration made in the spam of a month. Well, canned meat by-products aside, I suppose I should congratulate anyone who vehemently defends what they admit is sub-par. True, its only the span of a few minutes.
No hate, just not expecting much based on the released track and the way they push this in a way that overtly smacks of desperation.
My take? Good idea on paper, execs loved it. The end product, however, sucks bilge water and they are doing anything they can to get it sold before word gets out.
