The Rockstar Ramblings: Down & Dirty
This week a look at the band Down & Dirty and the release of their first video: “Taste of Rock & Roll”. Based in Chicago, Down & Dirty have released an album by the same name this year. Research on the band quickly turned up two items. First, that the band is relatively new to the scene. Secondly, they have a large number of groupies – already. Why every fourteen year old kid doesn’t teach himself how to play guitar is beyond me. PICK ONE: A. Master’s Degree B. White picket fence C. Groupies. Don’t feel too dirty, most picked the same one as you. Now a look at the video…
We start in the bedroom of a rather young looking Red/orange-headed girl who has a CD of the band on her nightstand. Her friend, who looks like she stepped out of the eighties calls her and invites her to go to the Down & Dirty show. The bedroom setting is very early Cinderella Night Songs down to the walls covered with posters of rock bands. Both of the girls have piercings which cements the whole “face piercings are the new bandana” argument I continue to hear in the subway on my way to work each morning.
Flash to the band on stage, cannons shoot confetti and a guitar player is wearing a worn cowboy hat. It looks a little like the VERY early days of Poison, before Poison knew who was the pretty one (they decided on Rikki Rocket, right?). ANYWAY, back to the girls and we see 80’s girl picking up Red in her car. As she jumps in she throws up the devil horns so you know what that means – shot of Patron Silver.
The video then travels back in time, the band is arriving at the gig that looks like it may be in a High School parking lot (insert weekly pedophile joke here), but luckily it’s a club named MoJoes in Joliet, IL.
We are back rocking inside the club. The song’s catchy hook encourages a person in the front row to throw up the devil horns, followed by Red and 80’s girl making their way into the audience fist pumping devil horns. I’m not sure what to do with this so let’s say three shots and call it a day.
During the chorus (“The Taste of Rock and Roll”), the guitarist licks his guitar. I don’t think that’s the taste of rock and roll. Uh, if I had to guess, the taste of rock and roll is Marlboro Reds and Fleishman’s Vodka.
The end of the video shows Red leaving with the whole band. She ditches eighties girl because she needs THE WHOLE BAND? Wow, that’s dedication! That is going to taste like a carton of Marlboro Reds and a case of Fleishman’s Vodka, if I had to guess…
