Started listening to this album last night. From a few listens I like what I hear. One thing that stands out is the vocals, which is ironic because that's often the cited as the weakness. However, like a Tool album, the vocals and music blend together very nicely.
Well done Mastodon. 5-0. Keep it going! I'm looking forward to what other MU members have to say. I don't think this album will be as polarizing like the newest Opeth. MU album of the year? Maybe.
I think i'll wait until next tues. to buy the album, rather than listen now. Of the two songs ive heard, one was good, the second was so-so. Speaking of Opeth, saw them last night, setlist was just as polarizing as the new record. Very quiet and mellllllow Opeth show. Five songs off the new one,no growled vocals at all. For those expecting a best of set list, unless they change the setlist nightly,it aint happening. Performance was excellant as usual, just couldc have mixed a few heavier songs in imo.
Of the 13 songs performed,8 of them have never been performed;5 of which are off the new record. Akerfeldt gave pretty fair warning after the first song, greetings, and then," we are going to play alot of stuff we've never performed live before". Theres setlists posted on some sights. Three songs were performed accoustically,Akerfeldt and other guitarist sitting,Akerfeldt hasnt lost his humor, started off playing Free Falling by Tom Petty to start the acoustic numbers. I actually liked the new songs live, performed perfectly. Natives were getting a bit restless though, one drunk chick bellowed" play something heavy" during one of the mellower moments. Brave move on Opeths part, all in all it was a good show. Katatonia was great, they recieved the most enthused response.
I dont usually do this but...I'm going to wait to listen till I actually get the album. The comments giving it props and the two songs Ive heard are enough. I already had Curl of the Burl stuck in my head the second time i listened to it, so I know I'll be getting something worth my while.
also, lol@ the fact that its impossible to properly classify Mastodon since they keep evolving their sound. I remeber when they were just called post-metal, then they went prog, and now theyre a progressive groove band. LOL

if MU can give Chthonic's new album 5 stars and not this gem, I'm going to be p***ed. This is the best album of the year!
