Not a fan of this album artwork. I'm sure I'm not alone on this one. Still I hope the album is great and the band will continue their progression. I hope the new album is a little more aggressive in sound...more like Remission and Leviathan. Clean vocals are not Mastodon's forte.

Exactly, post 1! More aggressive, harsher vox like Leviathon. CTS did nothing for my ears, surprised it was so widely accepted, boring to me. Yea,cover works not very appealing.

idk i kinda like it its simple but theres alot going on too. as for CTS its there most progressive album yet but i wouldnt mind something more aggressive but at the as time theyre not the same band as they were when they made Remission and Leviathan but i worship the band and they can do no wrong in my eyes i just want this new album in my hands

I actually hated Mastodon UNTIL Crack the Sky came out. Considering how the music was structured, the clean vocals actually worked wonders for me. the few times they came in with their heavier vocals they were executed fantastically.

That having been said, I look forward to them returning to that heavier sound, but with their newfound refinement they developed on CTS.

Also, I think the album cover is rediculous and retarted. Considering the song titles (Blasteroids? What the hell is that? whatever it is, it sounds awesome), I think the album cover looks exactly in tune with what theyre going for. I like it BECAUSE its rediculous and retarted. :p

I'm not knocking Crack the Sky..in fact I loved the album (along with all their albums). I just think they should continue their progressive style, but include their aggression found on the first two albums. I think that combination would best suit the band and produce one epic album!

I don't think it looks retarded really. For some reason it actually caught my eye and I'm diggin' it. I'm with FAN. I didn't like them until their last album, then I got on board. And even then I only dug a few songs. This band's always been kinda weird to me.
If they took a heavier direction with this album I'd definitely listen though.

IT is incredibly underwhelming. Mastodon cannot release two of the most epic metal artwork and then release something like this......... completely anticlimatic if you ask me

Yea hear ya guy,Romanos masterwork is the Leviathan record, surprised they didnt commission him to do art for this record. Design for this leaves little to be desired imo. Read somewhere else it sorta looks like Priests early to mid 80s work,Screaming @ Defenders covers. I can see that. Cover art doesnt make or break, just hope the recorded content exceeds this .

PTF, I just never really listened to any of their older stuff, and the music that some friends showed me of their older stuff just didn't really click for me. Maybe if I had gone back and listened to it myself it would've been different.
But I had and still have now more then enough music to never listen to this band ever and be ok. Not takin' anything away from this band though. They're good, and like I said I'm gonna give this a listen.

I have been a long time Mastodon fan and a longtime fan of Romano's album covers as well. I think I am the only person that hated the CTS cover though. Sure the cover of CTS is "neat" and has a bunch of colors, shapes and lines, but overall it looks like a thrown together in photoshop, convoluted attempt at adhering to the theme of the album piece of crap. With that being said, I am glad to see them going a new direction visually and bringing it back down to the "street" level. I mean a psychedelic warp background with a five-mouth five-eared pinata looking crazed stag-bull. WTF is more mastodon than that.

Wouldn't blending CTS with their old sound just be another Blood Mountain? Regardless, it will be a great STUDIO album.

I'm liking the artwork...and titling it "The Hunter" sounds a bit aggressive. Maybe they will regress; or after a couple of lighter albums, is this progression? j/k

Idk maybe you are right Cozen..I, however, thought Blood Mountain was their weakest album (still great though). It never really clicked with me like the others. It also never really had a concept album feel to it.

PTF - I felt that Blood Mountain fulfilled the "earth" concept well enough and the Ozzy-esque clean vocals caught me way off guard. It works (in the studio).

I was hooked after the "March of the Fire Ants" video on Headbangers Ball back in the day so I'm happy with any style they choose.

29. their weakeast album is definitely writes:

Fire, or Remission. I mean it was still good, but listening to that album you can tell that they were in their beta stages. March of the fire ants, mother-puncher, where strides the behemoth, and crusher destroyer were pretty good...... the album was kind of raw which i guess a lot of people can appreciate... i guess?
