70000 Tons of Metal - The World's Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise

An Interview With Erlend Hjelvik Of Kvelertak

Kvelertak has become well known to many with just one full-length album under the band's belt. Kvelertak's brand of metal, a sound influenced by many genres of metal and rock, has impressed audiences everywhere, earning the band great tours with like-minded individuals.

I had a quick talk with vocalist Erlend Hjelvik, who has also been busy with other projects like the black metal band Djevel, who’s debut album “Dødssanger” releases June 13th. Erlend and I discussed Kvelertak’s hectic tour schedule, albums, and what his favorite metal might be.

Buick Mckane: How are you doing?

Erlend Hjelvik: Pretty good.

Buick: Congratulations on being given two Spellman Awards.

Erlend: Yeah, thank you.

Buick: Well your first and only album came out last summer. Do you have any plans for a new one yet?

Erlend: Yeah, I guess Bjarte [Rolland] our guitarist is writing new songs for that at the moment, so we’re hoping to record next year or sometime. Hopefully next year. That’s what we’ll aim for at least.

Buick: That’s great. And you must be planning on doing some touring the rest of this year, and playing some festivals in the summertime.

Erlend: The rest of the year is pretty much packed. Next week we’re going on the European tour with Comeback Kid, that’s about a month. And then it’s the festivals for summer, like, just playing a shitload of festivals. And then for the rest of the year, we’re touring in Austrailia, and an East Coast tour in the U.S. sometime this fall, then another Europe tour.

Buick: And you just got off a U.S. tour with Weedeater and Zoroaster. Did you have a good time?

Erlend: Yeah, it was great. But I think that it was one of the most fun tours that we’ve ever done. Yeah, it was awesome. Even the driving parts; it was a lot more fun being stuck in the car for ten hours, like driving through Arizona and New Mexico, than it is in Germany driving on the autobahn. Also, SXSW was awesome.

Buick: Great. Hopefully you made lots of new fans.

Erlend: Yeah, I think so. I hope so. The shows were really good and especially SXSW. We did three shows and all of them were packed, so that was great. Can’t wait until the next time we get to play the U.S.

Buick: Since you’re touring so much now, what bands would you personally like to tour with in the future?

Erlend: I’m really hoping we can do a Baroness tour at some point. That’s one of the bands we’d like to tour with. We did some pretty cool tours last year, like we were on the Converge European tour with Kylesa also. That was awesome because that’s all bands we really like. We also toured with Coliseum and Bison B.C. That was great too, awesome bands and great people.

Buick: You seem to really like the southern bands.

Buick: Yep, we’re really into different kinds of music, but, like Kylesa and Zoroaster, and that kind of southern…I don’t know what you call it, but those are bands we really like.

Buick: Is there anything else you would like to say?

Erlend: Just thanks and you can check out my band Djevel’s new album this summer.
