Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman To Miss Upcoming Tour Dates

American thrash metal legends Slayer have announced that guitarist Jeff Hanneman will be unable to participate in the band's forthcoming tour, as he is currently at home recovering from arm surgery, after he contracted a serious infection, most likely from a spider bite.

He is expected to make a full recovery but will still need several skin grafts. As a result of this, the band has decided to bring in a guest guitarist for the tour, to avoid cancelling any more tour dates, though who the guitarist is has yet to be revealed.

"Jeff is our brother, we've all been friends and together as a band for almost 30 years," said Araya, "so we're all just crushed by this."

"After everything that happened last year," King added, "we all agreed that we just can't let our fans down again," referring to Araya's severe back and neck pain that prompted his January 2010 surgery, unfortunately leading to the band's postponement or cancellation of numerous shows in 2009 and 2010. "So we will tour as planned. But I'll tell you, we can't wait for Jeff to get better and get his ass back on the road."

Jeff in hosptial? Impossible!

Guessing he'd be better by the time they come over here for Sonisphere in July.

Get well soon Jeff, you're one of the coolest dudes I've ever seen.

Not to start sh** but when I last saw Slayer August 14 in Lowell Ma Slayer @ Hanneman especially got their asses handed to them by Megadeth. Hanneman was horribly out of tune 4 their entire set. Long time Slayer fan here too. But they were wooped. Sounded old and tired. Think there's more 2 Hanneman story than justice a spiders bite. Megadeth are a well oiled f***in machine with Broderick and Junior back

Tenney, I also saw Slayer with Megadeth in August in Chicago...we both have spoken about this tour earlier in blogs...Megadeth DID steal the show...Slayer did sound tired......and by the way I am a HUGH Slayer fan...I really think that Jeff is hampered by this spider bite. Jeff is way too loyal to his band and fan base to actually have some issues with the band and not perform. i think you might be looking into this just a little too much bud...although I do agree with you that they seem older and tired ..but they were coming to an end of a grueling summer of touring by August..so I will give em a pass on this one

At dawn they sleep: I thought Hannemans sloppy play was due 2 over indulgence issues. He was a step benind band and horribly out of tune he looked slumped over and disinterested. Just my take. Like I said huge Slayer fan here. I hope its just a spider bite

Slayer is just too f***ing metal for their own good. You know your band is badass when your guitarist is out with a spider bite.

lol...but really, best of luck to Hanneman, he never gets as much credit as Kerry King but I honestly think he's the best of the two.

JEFF!!! you are the god of riffs; not kerry. i saw SLAYER for three times and you wear your raiders jersey and your shin guards! you are the only guy in metal who's not interested in stupid small-tlak in autograph sessions or in interviews. you can walk on stage with a good old heineken and beat the sh** out of your guitar!!! Man, YOU are SLAYER

ps: its the first time that you are the reason for a plan-b in this band, so great respect for that and come again well recovered .
Greetings from Germany

Slayer got a pretty bad review in Metal Hammer when they did part of their tour over here last year. For example Tom can't even headbang anymore, complaints arose due to the band seeming too "Old".

Slayer are one of the heaviest bands around, the fact that Jeff may be out of tune or Tom can't headbang anymore makes no difference.

I saw the guys twice last year - their first date in the UK at Leeds - The pit was f***in' INTENSE! So bloody violent. If the band are too old or out of tune then how come they can still turn a crowd into a big, brutal pit? Also saw them at Sonisphere in Knebworth - Even though the outdoor events don't have the same atmosphere as the clubs and medium halls, they still got that crowd moving!

And besides, even if a band is at an "old" age at least they're still touring. Rather see an aged band on their last tour then to have never seen a band at all!
