2BNT: That's how Maynard rolls. I've seen Tool more times than I can count and he's never been your typical "front man". In fact, the only time i've ever seen him in front of the band was during the Lateralus tour (and even then he was painted in flourescent paint under a black light) and the Undertow tour which he was incognito or costume for every song.
I saw them at Big Day Out on the GOld Coast earlier this week. They also performed here only a few years ago and last times show was much better. YOu only see Maynards sillouette for the entire show, and their song selection wasnt that great for a festival (too many slow songs) But they still put on a great show! I think they got out staged by Rammstein who played just before them though.
I've seen Tool about 6 or 7 times and the time I saw them in Germany at the Rock Am Park festival he was wearing jeans and a cowboy hat and was visible to the left of Carey on a platform the entire show. This was for 10,000 Days.
The other times I saw them it was like others mentioned.
^^^I saw the same tour here and can confirm that he was actually in front of Danny here, but once again no stage lighting. You could see that it was Maynard with a cowboy hat on and occasionally the familiar bull horn, but you couldn't see his facial features and NEVER a spotlight.
I concur with all posts about Maynard's presence at shows.
I will add that I had what I thought were sh!tty seats to one of the Lateralus shows I attended (side stage w/ speakers in my face). What this offered though, was a front row seat to Maynard who set up directly below my position on an illuminated square platform...as far back- left as possible.
I particularly remember the Lateralus performance; he would lean way back and then slam his head straight down towards the ground in a fluid motion on beat while keeping up with the lyrics seemingly on key "with my feet upon the ground..."
Basically slower yet exaggerated trans-like headbanging. I'm sure you're all aware...just the view I had was sick.

Thanks a lot, you just made me ruin my pants.
haha Maynard's "dancing" is awesome. My favorite is the stinkfist dance.
I'd also like to add that at the show here, some drunken arsehole bounced a JD bottle off Maynards melon and he had to leave the stage for 46&2, The Pot and Eulogy (maybey this is why he ended up behind Danny for the rest of the tour?). 46&2 being my favorite tune I was obliged to help the pit ensure that fvcker left on a stretcher. Lets just say that dude won't throw bottles at Tool again... :-)
Maynard is in no way a front man he is a band mate. To him his friends come first. He practices humility by offering the stage 2 his fellow band members and by offering his voice not an iconic figure 2 idolize. It brings me great joy 2 see a worthwhile example being set
