August Burns Red Issues Japanese Road Report
Pennsylvania based Christian metallers August Burns Red have checked in with the following road report from their Japanese tour dates:
"Konbanwa! Last night around 1AM we arrived back home in Manheim, Pennsylvania following our first ever tour of Japan. We had an incredible experience. We arrived in Japan late at night on Tuesday, June 15th. We flew out out of London following our show at Download Festival (such a great time!) with a short layover in Beijing, China, before arriving in Nagoya Japan. We were greeted warmly at the airport by Mako and Norio of the Japanese band Each of the Days. They were kind enough to act as our tour guides for our first two days in Japan.
"On Wednesday, we had the entire day off to walk around Nagoya and get a little more acquainted with how things operated in Japan. We saw a Japanese temple, played in an awesome Japanese arcade, ate breaded octopus, ate raw octopus, drank sake, and perused lots of different shops. I was really excited to eat at a restaurant where I had to take off my shoes before sitting at the table. It’s little things like that that made me fall in love with Japan. Such an awesome culture!
"Thursday we met up with our old friends in Greeley Estates, who were playing three of the four shows in Japan with us. It was awesome to see those guys again in a place so far from home. They seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as we were. The first show was in a small club in Nagoya called Club Zion. Three of our four shows were part of the Geki Rock Fes, (Loud Rock Festival). We were headlining the third installment of this festival.
"Our first show in Japan was lots of fun. Over 200 kids were crammed into a space that I estimated should’ve held about 100 people. The club was so hot and humid, and about halfway through our set I think we were all happy we were only playing for 40 minutes. The crowd was so enthusiastic and receptive, as they were at all four shows we played in Japan. Even though most people speak very little English they still know the songs and were singing along, moshing, stage diving, etc. It felt a lot like the early days playing hall shows and dive clubs. Lots of people in a small space feeding off one another. I like that feeling a lot.
"On Friday we piled in a van and drove from Nagoya to Osaka. It rained almost the entire day but I bought an umbrella so it wasn’t a big deal. Osaka seemed a little more modern than Nagoya. We played for about 300 people in club called The Live House. The room had great air conditioning so it wasn’t as hot as the previous night, but the crowd was still awesome. Everything seemed to click really well in Osaka and I was really happy with how we played. That show just felt good. I love that feeling.
"After the show, Geess, the owner of Howling Bull (our record label in Japan), took a few of us out to a club called Rock Rock. Apparently Rock Rock is a pretty famous spot and has been visited by bands like Metallica and Guns n Roses over the years. The owner of Rock Rock was so kind and prepared a bunch of delicious food for us himself. He made this spicy fried rice dish that I absolutely loved. It was the best food I had the entire time I was in Japan. So good! We spent the night dancing with our new Japanese friends and our friends in Greeley Estates. I got to bed around 4:30am that night, which I would soon learn would become my bedtime in Japan. It’s hard to go to bed early when you’re having so much fun! Rock Rock and Osaka will not soon be forgotten. Tune in tomorrow for part 2!"
