Musicians Boycotting Arizona Over New Immigration Law

Billboard.com is reporting that musicians, including Rage Against the Machine and Serj Tankian, are boycotting Arizona over a recently passed immigration law. An excerpt from the report follows:

Rage Against the Machine lead singer Zack de la Rocha has enlisted dozens of musicians and activists to join The Sound Strike, an open call by artists to boycott the state of Arizona over its recently passed immigration law. The law passed by the Arizona state legislature, SB1070, requires local authorities to determine a person's immigration status if he or she is suspected of being undocumented.

Groups like Cypress Hill, Juanes, Conor Oberst, Los Tigres del Norte, Rage Against the Machine, Cafe Tacvba, Kanye West, Calle 13 as well as Oscar winning filmmaker and activist Michael Moore have signed on to the campaign, which was announced on thesoundstrike.net today.

"Fans of our music, our stories, our films and our words can be pulled over and harassed every day because they are brown or black, or for the way they speak, or for the music they listen to," de la Rocha wrote in an open letter announcing the campaign. "People who are poor like some of us used to be could be forced to live in a constant state of fear while just doing what they can to find work and survive. This law opens the door for them to be shaked down, or even worse, detained and deported while just trying to travel home from school, from home to work, or when they just roll out with their friends."

The website calls for additional artists to sign on to the boycott of Arizona, and asks fans to sign an online petition calling for the law's repeal. Other artists who have already joined The Sound Strike boycott include Joe Satriani, Serj Tankian, Rise Against, Ozomatli, Sabertooth Tiger, Massive Attack, One Day as a Lion, Street Sweeper Social Club, Spank Rock, Sonic Youth and Tenacious D.

These people are either stupid or misinformed. The law does NOT allow an officer to say "Hey, your brown let me see your papers!" It allows an officer to request documents if they have come in contact (pulled over, been given a call etc.) with someone that might not be here legally. There MUST be a contact made other than the reason of their skin color.

As does the same law in Ontario, Canada. I understand and fully appreciate that federal immigration reform is long overdue but Arizona's lawmakers have been a bit over the top lately. Not just with the most televised racial profiling law either... But RATM and Tankian are punishing fans who are on their side and in the minority (heh, double meaning there) in that state. No winners here.

^100% agreed my brother...finally someone with some sense (post 1 & 2)....
Pst3 ill buy that as well...
But look who's leading this wack brigade....serj tankian, and tom morello....enough said...
The arizona bill is about 17 pages long, anyone who has a beef with it i suggest you read it #1, word for word in its entireity...aint that much different if at all than from the federal law on policeman pulling people over.....federal law states a cop can pull you over for farting....if a cop has reasonable doubt to pull you over they can...which i didnt know till about 2 weeks ago....
Im totally against racism and racial profiling, but the state of AZ is in debt about 1.7 billion dollars #1 and 2 is being raided with crime, mostly caused by illegals, drug trafficing from mexico and "coyotes" who illegeally bring people across the border into the US....major part of that debt are illegals, and ICE deportations, all the fahqn time
Jan brewer showed major, major balls on this, and i commend her....the obama adminstration has sent more border patrols along the border, but it hasnt really done much good....then has the nerve to crack on the bill, but has not read it in its entirerity as well as eric holder, and janet nopalatano, and they have all said so at 1 point....
As long as your legal in the state/ country, and have an ID or a driver license thats legit there is nothing to fear...61% of arizona citizens agree with this law....30% of the citizens are hispanic....
California has threatened to boycott AZ, however we get most of our electricty from them....MLB has threatened to move the all star game from AZ next year because of this, protesters at a laker game (40 of them) protested outside staples center before game 2 against phoenix and because lakers coach phil jackson refused to jump on the bandwagon supporting the ban....
This is an attempt to protect legal, law abiding citizens in the state of AZ, of all colors and races from illegal immigrants who drive up taxes, medicare and crime
Period....AZ has asked for help from the government for over 10 years on this subject and has got nothing in return or very little, so they had to do something......props to them for finally stepping up, showing some nut and defending themselves......
California has showed to be absoultly no spine, and political azz kissing in this matter and im not surprised....calif suxs, and i plan on leaving simply because the politicans in this state have no fahqn balls, or are just incompetant on other matters as well....good luck AZ, you have my full support....i begg people who are against this bill, please read it and do research, because it is misleading...and dont let tankian and morello feed you a bunch of bullsh!t...it there ideology, not facts or the truth.....
Thank you...* steps down from podium*

I live in Az. Let me school ya. This law requires nothing more than an ID (or a passport) to prove your here legally. If that chaps your a$$, then you may want to look into the laws in your own state because i'm pretty sure every state in the union has such a requirement for it's tax paying citizens. So, unless you feel that immigrants have more of a right to be in your state than tax payers it shouldn't ruffle any feathers.

Blindgreed. What's an ID that shows immigration status if you're a citizen? Are they going to tie driver's licenses into the system? IMO, that is key and they should. But the reality is that there are a lot of different systems to tie in to make that happen and the govt isn't so good about communicating interagency, much less fed to state.

That's the bottom line really, is that we don't have a good "id" system. Showing someone your passport does not show immigration status either, to be accurate. And a "green card" is not an actual card to carry around. I don't disagree with enforcing immigration laws, but the reality of it is messy because our system is messy. It'll be much easier once we all have microchips installed in us.

This is what you get when you allow Liberals to form an opinion. Anyone who has read the law, and has an ounce of common sense, can see that the law is basically a mirror image of the actual federal law that is on the books, just not enforced. They adopted a federal law as state law. Nothing racist (a word which has no meaning anymore) or unconstitutional (yet another trem bandied about by people who have not read The Constitution) about it. Anyone taken a gander at Mexico's immigration law? It's 3 times as strict as ours. Yet a large group of people accept and welcome the opinions of hypocritical douchebags like Michael Moore.

hey RT....the coppers in SB do pretty routine 'status checks' under the guise of auto/driver compliance verification roadblocks on the various arteries leading into and out of the barrio zones there, been doing it for years....our studio was on the fringes of one such area, and i had to go through the things all the time.....first couple rounds i was immediately regarded with suspicion by misappropriated proxy of having NM plates on my truck (NO! its NOT fvcking mexico!).....of course, it was never any problem, and i didn't mind the slight inconvenience, as i fully supported the purpose of the stops

To be honest, this whole system is messy, the US lets the illegals slip in and then tries to kick em out... Blegh

Zach and the gang made 2 mistakes:
1. Misunderstanding the law

2.Thinking boycotting the city (in other words preventing fans in the city from watching their shows) would help the situation... Either way a lot of the fans are as mindless as the "mainstream community" they hate so much. "i think for myself cause they told me to". This petitions gonna be signed and completed either way.

I'm not sure how boycotting the city would improve the situation. They'd just end up with a bunch of angry fans...

Anyway, i'm just a 13 year old kid whos typing away at his laptop when he should be sleeping. =P

The law hasn't gone into effect yet douchebag. Besides, there can't be 3 white cops in Arizona on duty in the same week to pull you over because 80% of the force is hispanic. You sir are a fvcking liar.

DB: As AP1 pointed out, this is a federal law that is just being enforced in Az. ID that communicates your immigration status could be a state ID, a passport (if your truely just visiting), or in most cases down here a visa (usually a work visa). Bassically the same sort of papers Americans have to carry anytime they enter another country and come into contact with law enforcement. While I understand your concern for American interagency communication, it's a safe bet that we're better at it than any other country i've been to. And as AP1 also pointed out, countries like Mexico in particular have MUCH more harsh laws than what is being implemented here in Az.

The mindset of these Liberals is appalling. The law specifically prohibits racial profiling and only allows police to question an individual if they are already investigating/pulling that person over. Again, if someone commits a crime or is involved in a traffic stop, the police can now ask them to prove that they are a legal citizen of this country- NOTHING wrong with that. I wish my state would draft and pass such a law.

What we have here is a deliberate misinterpretation of the law to the American people by leftists across the country, from the LA Mayor on up to the President himself. Obama could go on TV right now and calm everyone down by explaining racial profiling is strictly prohibited in the bill, but the community-organizer-in-chief is using this as a political manuever to try and get the “Latino” vote to replace the Independent Party voters that are leaving him in droves. His far left policies have alienated middle America, and part of his plan to make up for that is to give amnesty to the illegals so that they will vote for him in 2012. Our President is taking the side of illegal alien criminals, instead of siding with the people of Arizona who are tired of the drug cartels and violence that exists on all border states, as well as the financial drain illegals are within our school and health care systems. Enough is enough! The people of this country are all for LEGAL immigration and are sick of being called racist by Liberals/Progressives just because we believe immigrants should come here through the proper, legal channels. We are a nation of immigrants, always have been, but we have to monitor who comes in and out! Anyone who pretends not to acknowledge this simple fact has an agenda to destroy this country, plan and simple.

Let me first just say how awesome it is to read through these threads and see that there's actually people with common sense...now let me say that if I could, I wouldn't mind getting some kind of GPS tracker tagged into my arm or my gf's arm, not because I don't trust her, but because that story about the girl who was kidnapped from the Metallica concert scares the sh** out of me, and if she had had some sort of GPS tracker on her, it might not have ended that way.

Now you all have made excellent points regarding the immigration issue, and I can only hope that SOAD boycotts playing anywhere in the midwest, but I seriously think you've all forgotten to mention the ultimate argument against these stupid a$$ musicians...

If we sneak into one of their concerts and get caught, would they still have the audacity to have us thrown out and/or press charges? Or can we live in their fantasy world and as long as we don't get caught sneaking in, we get to stay and enjoy their show at everybody else's expense? Maybe we could smuggle some drugs in, kidnap some women for the white slave trade? Sounds pretty good to SOAD and RATM, amirite?

but back on topic I think people can actually start to b**** about this immigration stuff when we enact a shoot on sight policy at the border and throw down a mine field for these criminals to pass through. other countries treat illegals and criminals way more harshly than we do. i think all these "celebs" speaking out against this should just piss off. i think if we fix our broken country and get back to a position of power we could then better help the world get back to where it needs to be but instead of isolating ourselves to fix our problems we get continually tied up in so much other political BS we'll never see the right path.

DB #42, I think the microchip thing has happened already without our acknowledge. In a way.

Here in Europe we've got this EU ID card with a chip which you can order from the local police station. I got it and I f-cking hate it. It's got way, way too much personal info attached to it. I'm starting to feel like my entire life's on that one chip.

Example; I recently got a new mobile phone, the guy at the store put my card into the whatever it's called "chip reader" unit, and he asked me which bank account I'd like to use for the bills, the finnish or the foreign account. I was shocked that he knew I had a foreign account, and I definitely didn't like that at all. They should just send me the bill, what method of payment, what account and where it's based is my own f-cking business and mine alone.

Should I just burn the ID card? I'm starting to think I should.

The problem in part is that many people have read only SB1070 and not the actual law which is HB2162. I am against the law but am appalled at the gross ignorance of it as people continue to speak without the facts. Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Governor Jan Brewer are without a doubt racists and bigots (at least Brewer). Anyone who actually lives in this state knows this. Arpaio has been implementing this law for years illegally and can now do it legally with less hassle. I am required to have my passport on me when I travel so I have no issue with that requirement here. However, Apraio and his posse, as it is called, will and do find any excuse to pull a Mexican over and after that the new law protects them in their racist endeavors. We need to vote Arpaio and Brewer out. BTW, for those who don't know, Brewer was never elected. She was up next for the post when Napolitano was asked to work in the Obama administration. The moment this was announced those of us will brains knew it was just a matter of time.

Seriously. It will only hurt people who DO work and have nothing to do with the law.

Pull your heads out of your asses and stop acting on pure emotion people! It's not a racist law, immigrants can come from anywhere, white, brown, black...

but if they are not here legally, then they are commiting a crime. it's just a fact. And merely asking if someone is a citizen when they are pulled over by police is not f***ing racist!

I beleive that it is harder than it should be to become a citizen, but that does not mean we should CATER to illegal immigrants. OF ANY RACE.
