Gene Simmons (Kiss) continues to push a “stage challenge” to both U2 and The Rolling Stones. I find it interesting this offer has yet to be extended to AC/DC. Is it just me, or when Kiss makes their version of a Superman movie (this will happen) we will learn that AC/DC is Gene’s Kryptonite? …

The A&E network has green lighted a reality show titled “Growing Up Twisted,” following the family of rocker Dee Snider (Twisted Sister). Given how reality shows are being handed out to eighties rockers like candy corn on Halloween, I’m rooting for “Doing Time with Lane.” The pilot episode shows Jani Lane (Warrant), dressed in prison orange, picking up trash on the side of the highway. The comedy comes during the ten minutes when other inmates are mocking lane, singing the lyrics to “Cherry Pie” as Jani stabs empty Bud Light cans and Charleston Chew wrappers…

In more Kiss news, Gene Simmons is being sued by Victoria Jackson of ESPN for “grinding” on her during an appearance. Simmons defense is that it would be impossible for him to grind on anyone while in full costume, complete with his large cod piece. Anyone else predicting a sequel to “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit!” defense…

Steel Panther is creating a pilot for a new show on Comedy Central. I’m assuming this is reality based, I just can’t see Steel Panther working the classic sit-com style script. Having one of their teenage sons come home with an earring just won’t have the same impact as when Theo got his ear pierced on The Cosby Show…

VH1 has again teamed up with Bret Michaels to create another show titled “Life As I Know.” It’s a documentary detailing his life away from the stage and reality television. Next year, Michaels is hoping for a sequel, detailing his life away from documentaries…

Ozzy Osbourne will be putting out a Black Christmas album during the holidays and have a televised special under the same name. Family participation is expected to be 90% Sharon, 9% the children, and 1% Ozzy, actually that isn’t true, those are just the Vegas odds at this time…

This week’s NO BIG SURPRISE comes from Axl Rose (Guns N Roses) who is suing his ex-manager, Irving Azoff for five million dollars because he attempted to derail Chinese Democracy and its world tour…This week’s REALLY NO BIG SURPRISE comes from news that Marilyn Manson will be starring in a slasher movie titled: Splatter Sisters. This is like finding out Bang Tango were in fact all women. Just a lot of nodding all around…

Finally, there really isn’t much to say, most have said it very well. This week many in the music business paid their respects to Ronnie James Dio. A rock legend that created the template on Hard Rock, will of course be missed. Most interesting to me was the phrases heard consistently that described Ronnie James Dio as a “True Gentlemen” and “Class Act.” To have everyone feel this way goes beyond ones contribution to their generation (which is plenty), and in my opinion is what everyone should aspire to.

Personally, I was never (until recently) that familiar with Ronnie’s older work. For me, hard rock started in 1982, and yes, this is unfortunate for me, I know. I most remember Dio’s videos “Rainbow In The Dark” and “Mystery.” In each of his videos Dio would be wearing leather pants or jeans (like construction workers, not like Def Leppard or Bon Jovi), white boots (like the ones worn by Def Leppard and Bon Jovi), there were shots of random church scenes, and Dio was often hanging out on rooftops. To this day when having dinner or drinks on a rooftop bar I might notice a dark opening in a corner and think (and will continue to think), “Oh, that’s where Dio is going to come out…”

I saw Ronnie James Dio in 1977 with Rainbow. He had one of the greatest voices in all of hard rock...arguably, perhaps the best. Listen to Long Live Rock and Roll by Rainbow to get the point. Long Live the Voice of Ronnie James Dio! RIP RJD...
