Type O Negative Frontman Peter Steele Passes Away

Band Photo: Type O Negative (?)
Peter Steele, the lead singer for Type O Negative and a true icon and enigma, has reportedly died of heart failure at the age of 48. As of 4:00 am, fellow bandmate Kenny Hickey has confirmed initial rumors of his passing. Despite a similar rumor in 2005, it appears the reports of his passing are true. His work with Type O Negative was groundbreaking and a large influence on other various genres of metal, especially doom metal. As the song goes, "Everything Dies" but know that the music lives on...
UPDATE: Blabbermouth.net also reports that Type O Negative keyboardist Josh Silver has confirmed Peter Steele's death.

A true legend! "...searching for something which can't be found, but I'm hoping..." Words that used to describe me. Then I found Type O Negative. In honor of a great frontman, bass player, and songwriter; I will be playing Type O all day! And probably all week! Rest in peace Mr.Steele.
Funny, I always thought he would outlive me! Anyway, when I met him at the Nokia show last year in NY he was surprisingly very polite and cool, had a very sly humor and quick wit. Today I will be listening to the entire Type O Negative discography in his honor. Thanks, big guy, for the music.
I was just saying to Oz...Type O Negative were the headliners of the very first concert I ever went to, at the Astoria in London. They were supported by Static-X and Coal Chamber - this concert had a profound impact on me, and helped shape me into the man I am today.
I played my favourite Type O song, "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" on the show last night, and was unaware of his passing, or it would have been a tribute. I only just found out about it.
We at The Nightshift Rock Show offer our sympathies to the band and Pete's family at this time. Truly one of the great frontmen of our time.
Oh man. This is really sad news.
I was hoping Type O Negative to return as it seemed Peter was 100% back together again. So weird. I just read an old interview with Peter and Kenney from '96 which I had never read before (as I frankly didn't care for Type O back then).
The influence of this band was huge. I wonder if we had Rammstein or half of the entire nu-metal movement if it wasn't for them (or to be more specific, guitar players tuning down to C and B)
Rest In Peace, Sir.
F**k man, no!! I can't f**king believe it.....Peter had such a gifted and unbelievable talent quality to him. Gonna miss that booming voice of his. R.I.P. Peter!
Also I don't know if this is not the right time to ask since it may be too soon, but has there been any word on Peter's ex-gf, (who is discussed in a lot of T-O-N songs) on saying about this news?
What a sad day for music. Peter was so unique and charismatic as a frontman, singer, and lyricist. I'll be listening to Bloody Kisses and October Rust today for sure. I passed up an opportunity to see them with Hatebreed 2 years ago, which now I completely regret. I wish the best to Johnny Kelly, Kenny Hickey, and Josh Silver. R.I.P. Peter Steele
Man, ok I've regrouped. Peter Steele is pretty much the reason I started writing music. I can't even say how much his music means to me. Everything I watched about the guy shows how funny and amazing he was, I hope he has found peace from all the turmoil he had in his life now. See ya later Pete.
wow... not even being a fan of their music, and yet i still feel so sadden by this news. i did respect the hell outta the band and his most importantly. i truly hope that he's in a better place. obviously, i mean hell, kuz heaven isn't gonna allow any loud volumed metal be played. may he rlly rest in peace.
Holy sh**. I was just listening to the "Bloody Kisses" album yesterday.
Peter Steele was the reason I started playing bass guitar. His tone was amazing, and his vocals were just out-of-this-world-fantastic.
RIP Pete, you will be truly missed. My condolences to his family, friends, and bandmates.
Much heartfelt condolences & Godly embrance to TYPE OF NEGATIVE Peter STEELE's Family and to his bandmates Kenny Hickey, Johnny Kelly and Josh Silver as their mourn the lost of their brother/bandmate Peter Steele. What a a major "shock" and "great lost" the Lead Vocalist/Frontman Bassist Peter Steele was/and will forever be "outersight"...'has some major lungs on him/beautiful heavy & unique "baritone" vocal range. Amazing person as are his bandmates/brothers in battle green music crime: he/loved "green" didn't he...'it is an eye catching color of "life & breath" may he always be surrounded by it's many heavily colors as the legendary Iconic "September Sun" musician/writter PETER STEELE's Masterful-handsome Spirit grooves and rest with the other music legendary Icon Spirits in the Sky.
I listened to an absurd amount of Type O last night with a fellow fan when I got the news.
Bloody Kisses and (the perfect) October Rust are classic. With Rust being in my top 20 ever. Classic act. Classic front-man. Steele will be missed tremendously.
Now Playing: Type O Negative - "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend"

Truly sad. Been a big Type'O fan since '95. After 11 years of metal I was getting utterly sick and tired of trite mid 90's metal back in '95 and it was only discovering Panterra and Type'O that revived my faith that metal still had a future, it could still live on.
I think those classics and their dark humour will now have a certain, extra-special meaning.
Take it easy old son, catch you on the flip-side!

R.I.P. Pete. I wish i would have said something to you when you shook my hand, instead of standing there speechless. Type O Negatives music has been the soundtrack to my life since 99'. The good times, the bad times and the blurry times. As you say at the end of "I know your f***ing someone Else"- THanks for the memories.

this is crazy my brother just passed on april 27th and now this what the f*** god why cant you take people who deserve to die my bro and i were huge fans of type o at least i know hes in heaven with alot of awesome people
R.I.P Brandon + R.I.P Peter... ill see youll soon!

Peter Steele Ratajczyk:After my mother passed away last year and a couple of other things happened, I pretty much got back to my faith. I was born Roman Catholic. Believe it or not, I go tot church on Sunday and I do read the Bible. But I don’t read it as a how to live your life book. I read it as if I have a question I can open any page. If you’re open minded you will get the answer from a passage. And you will get a different answer if you read the same passage but it will still be just as worthy. ““I went to confession for the first time in 30 years. And the priest was very happy that I had come back to church and stuff. I didn’t go into each and every sin otherwise he would have to take two weeks vacation (laughs). I said ‘Father I did wrong and I want o apologize to God for my behavior and I’m going to try for it to not happen again.’ It’s better to pay in this life then in the afterlife. "I have pretty much been instructed to say three things: One is that God will not be the man let the man be the man. That abortion is the killer of angels and I am guilty of that myself. And that peace on earth shall not come until this state of design has been converted to Christianity. And that you are going to f***in pay for what you say and that’s your ticket to death so. . ." "My mother always told me if I really didn’t wan to do something, if I was really tired, but if I had helped someone and I really went out of my way for them but I asked nothing for it, that I should donate my energy to the souls in purgatory—meaning that to give my goodness to those who are trapped. This is purgatory/limbo. This is a very Catholic thing that very few people really understand." “Ever since I have come back to my faith, such incredibly strange things have been happening. Ten times a day if I ask God for a sign, through numbers and letters I will get it. I believe that God speaks to everyone in a way that only that person can understand, but I have been enlightened…

RIP Peter Steele; funny how Dasher and I were just talking around eight hours before your untimely death about how funny you are and how great of an interviewer you are. I have every single one of the Type O Negative Records. I never had the chance to personally meet you or interview you, but I say this and speak from every MU member that you will be missed...
