The Rockstar Ramblings: Tattoos, Tequila, and Ratt
Band Photo: Motley Crue (?)
During the next couple months eighties glam artists Ratt and Vince Neil, and less glam, but very eighties, Slash and Ozzy Osbourne, will be releasing new albums. What year is it again? Anyway, this is a good time to not only start looking at the music, but the videos as well. This week: Vince Neil’s “Tattoos & Tequila” vs. Ratt’s “Best of Me”.
“Tattoos & Tequila” starts with a blond, covered in tattoos, walking along the side of a pool. There is a quick shot of Vince chilling in a club; a big bottle of tequila is sitting in front of him. Judging from the look we are in either L.A. or Vegas. Cut to Vince screaming into a microphone and a young (relatively speaking) and intense band jamming in black and white. Back at the pool the blond comes out of the pool. Instead of handing her a towel, Neil hands her a glass of tequila. If we are counting “moves that only work in rock videos”, give a point to Vince.
Ratt’s “Best of Me” starts off old school, right where it all started, Sunset Blvd. in L.A. Two kids that looked like they just walked out of a comic book store find a pair of glasses on the sidewalk. One of the boys puts on the glasses and looks into a crack in the wall and what does he find: The band Ratt in a club like atmosphere getting a lot of ass; the camera shoots back and force between the members of Ratt making out with hot girls. Important side note to take away from this video: Stephen Pearcy gets the most ass.
Back to Vince and the tattooed girl. Predictably, we find that they are in Vegas and they are walking into Vince Neil Ink, Neil’s tattoo parlor on the Vegas strip. Both get a new tattoo and leave in a Z.Z. Top like car to go party at presumably, Feelgoods Rock Bar (also owned by Vince Neil). Oh, Gene Simmons must be jealous of this cross-advertising. T&T finishes up with Vince, a booth full of girls, and a lot of tequila.
Ratt is prepping the stage…I think there’s going to be a show. Sure enough, Ratt is now on stage jamming to their new tune (nice to see Pearcy still rocking the leather gloves). Outside the other boy has now put on the glasses so he can see the band playing (personally, I think the first kid got the better show). All of a sudden the video takes a strange turn as an electric current is circling the world, triggering others to see the video (an interesting take on viral marketing to say the least). The video ends in Times Square or something, it’s not very clear.
A couple other thoughts…
Hearing Pearcy’s lyrics, something to the degree of “A year from now we’ll still be going for broke” is classic old school Ratt. It makes you think that you’ve heard that line before. You have, it’s on all of the other albums (to some degree). However, Vince takes home the cake for cringe lyrics with “I dream about your booty. I haven’t heard lyrics like this since the song “Black Beauty” off the Motley Crue Generation Swine album, “She’s and HIV, VIP”. Of course, I’m sure Nikki wrote that, this one is all on Vince.
I wish “Tattoos & Tequila” had been delayed a month or two, that way Vince could have incorporated Vince Neil Aviation into the video. A quick shot of him and the tattooed blond sipping champagne with hot stewardesses? Should have happened. As far as “Best of Me”, why not have the electric current end in Times Square (as it does), but end with a scene of a rat in the street, you went old school with Sunset Strip, should have finished this one out.
Overall I was surprised how much I enjoyed these videos (and songs). Both have hooks that after a couple listens sticks with you. There’s nothing like going to a deli to buy coffee and cigarettes and have the cashier have to ask you twice to pay because over and over in your head is “Show me your tattoos and drink my tequila!”. Of course, there always has to be a winner so given one of the videos is set in Vegas we will play by their rules. I suspect Ratt’s album will be much, much stronger, but when there are tattooed girls and tequila the house always wins. These are the rules in Vegas, and there is nothing I can do about it.
