Unearthing The Metal Underground: The Los Angeles Metal Scene
Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am exploring the Los Angeles metal scene.
If you live in Los Angeles, or have been to a metal show, whether it be death metal, thrash metal, or just metal, you may have become accustomed to watching several unsigned bands perform before an advertised lineup start their sets. As soon as you're inside the venue, the bands set up, and they finally play. Sometimes, these bands make your want to run into a brick wall, head first, because they are an awful, yet convoluted noise somehow crushed on top of fingernails scratching across a chalk board. But, on rare occasions, you finally notice a band that would be, in your eyes, considered an artist in the making. Here are three unsigned metal bands from Los Angeles and surrounding areas that definitely need to be heard and given a chance in the world of heavy metal.
Fallen Figure is a death metal band that comes straight from the heart of Los Angeles. They conjure a unique sound within their music that is hard to find in this age - a mixture that is comprised of melody, a touch of hardcore, and even a hint of classic death. Everything from the vocals, to the percussion, to the riffs, to the rhythm; they add something different to the "new era" of death metal; catchy songs, surprisingly good guitar solos, and actual energy and movement on stage. See for yourself below:
Internal Corrosion is a thrash metal band from a small city on the outskirts of Los Angeles, Whittier. They will definitely be considered one of the up and coming thrash bands of 2010. They have an evoking sound with classic vibes. They are reminiscent of Slayer, Kreator, and old-school Metallica from the Master of Puppets days. Check out some of Internal Corrosion's music on their MySpace page.
While not directly from Los Angeles, Imminent Death is in the area of the OC (Orange County), hailing from Huntington Beach, about 40 miles south of L.A. By first listen, you would never guess that this band is as young as they really are. Just from listening to their only song listed on their MySpace, "Kill Ritual," they sound as if they've been together for ten years; their music sounds very seasoned and well put together, or assembled. While they definitely need work on their stage presence, if this band stays together they will soon be on the list for the best death metal bands of one of these coming years.
Of course, there are definitely many more great metal bands in Los Angeles that I haven't even heard of. If you know of any other good underground Los Angeles metal bands, please feel free to discuss them in the comments below.
