Unearthing the Metal Underground: Metal on Myspace
Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. In this edition of Unearthing the Metal Underground I’ll be discussing some random bands I found on MySpace. All acts are unsigned and talented.
Margin of Existence
Margin of Existence is a Greek melodic death metal band that takes the genre to a brutal level. The guitars are straight out of In Flames’ “Whoracle” album, but the vocals, done by George Triantafilou, are something straight out of Immolation. Many bands copy the in flames guitar style, but Margin of Existence adds in other death metal influences into the music. Check out their MySpace page here.
Tetrarch, a traditional/thrash metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, began in 2004 and has built upon the classic thrash/traditional metal bands by incorporating modern aspects to their sound. Their fast paced music is simple and makes you want to move, but unfortunately this can get boring as the guitars tend to be very repetitive and simple. The vocalist, Josh Fore, reminds me of a mix of a more talented Matt Heafy of Trivium and James Hetfield. If you dig Trivium’s style of vocal delivery, you may enjoy this band’s style. What’s really good about this band is their production is really good and the band is really tight. Still the band can have some potential and will definitely appeal to a wide audience. Overall, what the band lacks originality and good song writing is made up with the energy I feel from the music, which probably translates to a good live show. Check out their music on their MySpace page and watch a live performance below:
Awake By Design
Awake By Design is a unique metal band from the UK. Their vocalist, Adrian Powell, has a powerful voice with a good range. Their music is comparable to To/Die/For. Their music combines elements that most metal bands don’t incorporate together such as gothic, prog, power, and death metal. I feel like I am hearing elements of Fates Warning, Pyramaze, and Swallow the Sun in their music in addition to To/Die/For as previously mentioned. It’s hard to pigeon hole these guys and I like that. This is why it’s something that needs to be heard. Check out the band here.
Check back every Monday as we delve into a different scene or genre to unearth some new underground metal bands.
