"some music was meant to stay underground..."

A Metal Update For The Ignorant Masses

Fox News ran a piece today called Heavy Metal Returns to Center Stage, which covers the apparent resurgence of heavy metal. The writer quotes a couple "reliable sources" but basically stretches to make it appear that all metal is getting back together for this massive resurgence, while failing to mask the fact that she doesn't know much about metal, old or new, herself.

The last quote is the best, even if obvious:

"Pop music kind of has a three-year cycle," he said. "Sometimes metal bands play to 50,000 people, sometimes 5,000, but metal never completely goes away. Once in a while it bumps into the mainstream, as it seems to be doing now."

But then it's followed up with this dud that shows the writer's true colors:

But that doesn't mean that Britney Spears can't stay relevant.

"She just needs to learn to play electric guitar," Coletti said.

In my opinion this article is two years late, as I recall more "heavy" music being played on the radio as well as more hair metal reissues and "best of" compilations increasing in late 2000 and 2001. Metal HAS been making a comeback, but it started well before 2003 and does not revolve around the success or resurgence of 80's hair metal bands.
