R.I.P. Dimebag Darrell: Five Years Later

Photo of Damageplan

Band Photo: Damageplan (?)

Five years since the death of “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, and the world can not forget him. The circumstances in which he and several others died that night have changed the club experience forever; security is tight even in the smallest venues for fear that another deadly attack may occur. After his passing, countless tributes were given in his honor in the form of concerts, cover songs and personal statements from friends and fellow musicians. To add to the long list of tributes, Metal Hammer Magazine’s 200th issue being released on December 16 will include a “Dimebag” Darrell tribute album. Top metal bands such as Evile, Machine Head, Kiuas and Chimaira have come together to cover their favorite Pantera songs for the fifth anniversary of the tragic event.

Former Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo gave an emotional statement about the deaths of Dimebag and four others stating, “I’m so sorry to the whole world. I love Dimebag Darrell ‘cause, let me tell you something, there was not one mother fucker like him…I love him like a brother loves a brother. Vinnie Paul, my other brother, I’m so sorry…What is the world coming to? This has changed the world. I hope you realize that.” In an interview with Revolver Magazine, he said, “I'd give one of my fingers to fix everything somehow, go back in time, or to have been there. This is a harsh thing to say, but if I saw some stupid son of a bitch coming at my guitar player with a gun, I would have knocked his block off, you know? I would have taken a bullet for that motherfucker."

Dimebag’s brother and former drummer of Pantera Vinnie Paul comments on his brothers passing in an interview with Guitar World Magazine, “It's ruined my life and it's taken away so much joy and happiness from so many people. I guess what I'm trying to find is an answer for why this happened…"I know that Dime will live on forever, though, just like Jimi Hendrix and Randy Rhoads. It just happened way too goddamned soon. The music we made together will be around forever, but the thing that kills me is that we'll never get to do it again.”

Many fans of the world-famous band are still hoping for a reunion; at least between Vinnie Paul Abbott and Phil Anselmo. But others believe that without Dimebag, Pantera would be incomplete, and a band reunion should not be attempted at all. There’s one thing that they do agree on; Vinnie Paul and Phil Anselmo mending fences. Because of a dispute before Dimebag’s demise, the two have not spoken to each other since. Just after the incident, no one knew the reason behind the slayings. Blame was thrown on many people, but the truth is that only one delusional man was responsible. The world would like to see the two talking again before the 10th anniversary creeps up on us.

Hard to believe its been only 5 years since darrell s been gone, and after the tragedy i figured it would spur tighter security and better supervision at shows....not the case, in 5 years i ve probably gone to about 40 shows at different venues throught so cal and 1 in seattle, and their are still certain venues that are piss poor at checking for items at the door or stage security for bands....3 worst venues i found were the avalon and key club in hollywood, but the worst 1 being the galaxy theatre in santa ana ca...2 shows attended not once was i frisked, patted down or checked for weapons...they take your ticket and say go in, also by the stage absoultely no security at the side of the stage, anyone could walk up and do whatever and to me this is disgracefull...bands are literally taking a physical and life threatening risk by playing at these types of venues....i just dont want any band to have to endure what damageplan had to....RIP darrell

Being exposed only to the radio in my early days of Metal, the first songs I ever heard from Pantera were "Cowboys From Hell," "Cemetery gates," and "Walk."

I feel so privileged to have heard the straight Metal riffs from Dime; so catchy and recognizable. They stay with you. The music left behind is the kind that makes you wanna turn up the volume notch every time you hear it. That's something so simple, yet so special! I love the first Pantera albums as well as the later ones.

Some people knew Dime and others did not. Debate of his death carries on, and for a few it has come to a silent close. If anything is certain about this Man's existence and beyond his time of death, it's that his Music will continue to live on for all of us, whenever we pick up an instrument or push the "play" button.

To one of the most memorable Musicians in the Metal world, I say... thanks for the inspiration, and RIP. \m/

Nihilist: I revere Dime not so much for what he did, but what he didn't do. He embraced the rhythm section of metal and the low end. Not every song needs a wailing lead to be heavy and sometimes less is more. Like him or not, he changed the scene single handedly. Besides that, he was a hell of a nice guy and didn't deserve to go the way he did, but then... Who does?

Cmon kiddies, stop fighting and all make peace and love together.

Dimebag was a great influence to a lot of musicians today - one of the most sucessful bands which spring to mind would be Lamb Of God. Anyone who has made great music to influence great musicians to be great and then make more great music deserves my respect. "Above average guitar player" - possibly true, however this guitar player happened to shape a form of music in his lifetime - not many people can say that for themselves.

Just like Kurt Cobain, just like Hendrix, just like Lennon, they were all taken away from us, but left the relics of their soul which won't be forgotten - the music. Thats what always counts.

Those who need growing up would be the ones forgetting that a fellow human being died - one who deserves recognition, and are willing to denounce him purely on the media or for some other petty reason. Had he done something so terrible to you as to not deserve a simple "R.I.P"? I value anyones opinion if it has a point to it, however the songs he had created mean a lot to some people - perhaps more than others. At the end of the day, you cannot "forget he died and move on" since he made something that personally connected with you and helped you understand yourself a bit more. Thats the beauty of music.

Anyways, as overblown and drawn out as it is, thats my point. R.I.P Dimebag Darrell.
