The Rockstar Ramblings: Steel Panther

What do you get when you cross the hair of Warrant, make-up of Poison, lyrics of Ratt, and spandex of David Lee Roth? The heavy metal band Steel Panther. Actually, heavy metal parody is more accurate. Think Sunset Strip’s version of Spinal Tap.
The “story” is that Steel Panther ruled the Strip back in 1988 then suddenly disappeared. Their new album “Feel The Steel”, was recorded in the eighties and has just resurfaced. There is a Behind The Music episode and everything to support this.
The real story is that Steel Panther started in 2000 under a different name and have been playing weekly shows on L.A.’s Sunset Strip ever since. Along with the resurgence of fellow eighties acts, Steel Panther is riding the wave with a new release as well.
On their website (http://www.steelpantherrocks.com/) you can view a couple of their latest songs and videos. In particular, the song “Community Property” is incredibly humorous as well as disturbing as this band walks the line between parody and some of the actual music put out during the late eighties

Here are the lyrics to the first verse: “I would give you the stars in the sky/But they're too far away/If you were a hooker, you'd know/I'd be happy to pay/If suddenly you were a guy/I'd be suddenly gay”. Again half of these lyrics could have easily been from other bands.
SEE: Poison SEE ALSO: Great White.
This is even more apparent during the chorus: “Cause my heart belongs to you/My love is pure and true/My heart belongs to you/But my cock is community property”. A hook very similar to other songs from bands we know.
SEE: Winger SEE ALSO: Britny Fox.
Hair metal has always been “tongue and cheek” to some degree which is why listening to this band is entertaining. They get it and in their own way respect the genre. Even the bands they parody have been let in on the joke as celebrity vocalists have included Stephen Pearcy (Ratt) and Jani Lane (Warrant) as well as many B-list celebrities including Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo.
Whatever they have it is working. The proof is in the world tour that has started in the UK and will be coming to the US later this year. This is more than others can say.
SEE: Faster Pussycat SEE ALSO: Trixter.
