"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Event Talk About Mystic Fishook

Event drummer Matt Scurfield recently spoke to Electricbasement.com on their new release Mystic Fishook and the band's new sound, "We always wanted to create songs that were short, concise, almost a pop format, with a progressive twist on top.

As we moved on, we said, 'Well, we want to do things a little funkier, a little bluesier, a little industrial sounding - Faith No More, King's X, etc.' Garbage was a big influence with our new album, too. We're a hard-rock band with some nu metal-type things in there. We also still have some of the old stuff in there. That was always the trick with us: how to present things that musicians would like, but also find things the average listen could hang on to: 'That's a great melody. That song is really strong. There's the chorus.' To have each song stand out with its own personality.

On the last record ... some of it didn't hit with the hooks we wanted. The hooks were a little lacking. People really didn't catch the songs as they do now."
