Band Photo: Burzum (?)

Jackson Rathbone, who is perhaps best known for appearing in the movie Twilight, has apparantly signed on to portray Burzum mastermind Varg Vikernes in the upcoming movie, "Lords Of Chaos." The movie is about the Norwegian black metal scene and the church burnings and other crimes connected to it. Varg Vikernes has previously spoken out against the movie. Vikernes confirmed on May 22nd that he is now back in free society after serving sixteen years in prison for murder and arson.

M.H.D, no. I do not like Burzum. I have never, and will never buy a Burzum album in my life. I love black metal in its purest form.

If anyone has seen Bill Zebub's "Black metal a documentary" I recommend it. I agreed with nearly everything aside from the man who said that to hate Jews is alright in the black metal kingdom due to the fact that there is a lot of anti-xtians in it. I think to hate someone because of their brain is alright, but hate for someone’s race is just ignorant. I mention this as it is something that Varg would do, and one of the many reasons I hate the man!

More importantly one of the best directors working today is directing it, Sion Sono. The man already directed a similar film about teenage fans of a pop band committing suicide to show their devotion to the band. The film is called Suicide Club. Well, a bunch of Twilight fans might consider watching the movie just cuz of the actor's participation in it. The movie just might draw in the wrong crowd, so I'm starting to wonder if Metalheads should even watch it when it's in theaters.

Should Metalheads even watch this doc? If at all, should Metalheads just wait til they can rent it instead?

It will not be a documentary, it's not documenting real events. The film makers have said it will be a "psychological horror film" = f***ing terrible. It will probably be a horrible attempt at injecting Hollywood morality and sense into an understandable paradigm to the film maker.

If Varg describes the book as... "[statements that are] either misinterpretations; taken out of context; misunderstandings; malicious lies made by enemies; a result of ignorance; extreme exaggerations; and/or third-hand information at best." ... then chances are the movie will be an insulting degradation to metal culture.

Although post 35 is pretty funny - sort of what happens when a Twilight obsessed teen unsuspectingly wanders into an extreme metal haunt like this. Culture clash.

The movie is most probably some hollywoodian interpretation of "Lords of Chaos" book, the one I read a couple of years ago. Actually I think it is an interesting story, which would make nice money if adjusted to the average filmviewer. As for Varg, okay he did some stupid stuff back on the early 90ties, but come on, he was young, he wanted publicity and to be known, it's very common for such a punk to act that way, and he categorically achieved his goal, plus had lots of rumors and legends made up about him. He had 14 years of jail, which even though is not too much, it may be considered normal, remembering that 21 years is the maximum possible sentence ever to be given in Norway, and that was what he got, but for good behavior and stuff he got it shortened, which is a common thing. Reading his writings, one can see that he has improved and grown up, having a lots of experience, and reading since the time all this happened, so we can say that we have a different Varg today. Anyway, Im not into defending him, just want to say that all what happened now isnt so surprising, and who knows how the things exactly went on 10th of August, back on 1993...anyway, I wish him a normal life, and wish him to be a good father to his children. It's been long since Ive been out of Black Metal, now its all this nostalgy after I saw that he was released, really missed the scene...

Well this heavy news intake and if the trask is taken on well I hope it goes into the hands of someone that "cares" and will balanced this movie challenge fairly "Lords of Chaos" for it's two sides to everything: The Norwegian music scene in early 90's was filled w/hurt & pain...'very serious situration(s). Rising Star actor Jackson Rathbone is an excellent talent: I liked him in TWILIGHT (his the main reason I bought the DVD & saw the movie 3 times/he and that Alice girl and of course the main leads but it's his protrayal of Jasper/I liked alot! Frighten's me looked like a ghost) and his multi-personalities on CSI was mind blowing, very heavy intense/dangerous in that and I'm sure he/Jackson Rathbone will protray this highly acclaim & lethal musician Burzum/Varg Vikernes with passionate calm/intensity & justice. I can understand if VARG does not want this "Lords of Chaos" release maybe he feels it will open up a flood gate of pain (and hurt toward him/if this movie is done harmfully toward the youth that were going through troublesome moments)...'that he already dearly paid for missing out of 16yrs of his life without being with his Family. Just recently Varg Vikernes been release from his 16yrs of serving time and is now a free Citizen in Norway living with his Family getting a second chance out of life. All the best to him and his/The Vikernes Family. And yes it's very uncanny that Actor Jackson Rathbone (his a cutie!) looks like the musician Varg Vikernes! That's tripping me out!

Hahahah I'm one of those 'normies' :) Actually, most of my friends think I'm a hippy. Which is partly true, I guess. But nobody looks at me and says 'metalhead.' I honestly just don't find the general 'metalhead' dress fashion to be a look I can relate with. It either says "I don't wash my hands after I urinate," or "I wear black clothes and spikes because I was teased as a kid." That's my take on it, anyway. Does NOT appeal to me. I like to wear things that say, "I feel sunny," or "I'm classy," or "I'm getting in touch with the Mother Earth" (that'd be my hippy side lol), or "I'm a casual, fun guy with a smart, but subtle sense of style" - all this dressing like there is no colour in life bores me. And I am honestly the biggest metalhead I know. My other 'metal' friends listen to Metallica, Disturbed, Seether, Dragonforce, Airbourne, and Symphony X. My cousin (who got me into Korn baaaack in the day) likes proper metal, like me, but he also tries to tell me how awesome 311 are, and how Carpathian are totally killin' it (in a good way). Many grains of salt need to be taken when talking metal with anyone I know.

Also, as for scene kids getting into Cradle of Filth... uhhhh... dude.... That's been the case for years now. It's not something that could be about to happen. They stopped being proper black metal a fair while ago. Sorry if your bubble just got busted.

Also, I just got sick of my avatar. I'm gonna go change it. Sorry about the retarded rant. I just finished a horribly boring assignment and I needed to vent hahah.

INFERNO, #60, I do believe in death penalty, yes. While I go along with the idealism of "everybody's got the right to live", I think we have lots of people sitting in prisons who have proven that they're not capable of living among other people/ in our society. It doesnt make any sense that you have someone who kills 2-3 people without any obvious reason, people he/she didnt even know, then this person sits whatever 15years and gets released (has happened in europe on various occations). What, he/she was just having a bad day or something??
Of course death penalty should be used as the most extreme way of "punishment" (or are we actually releasing them from themselves??) and it should be applied only after very careful consideration, but yes, I support the death penalty. Not as a revenge, but as method of getting rid of the psychos who'd do it all again if they could.

My opinion.

Helvestero - Varg is a complete and utter douche bag and I think people need to understand that his actions weren't even justified. But as you said, his music is f ucking amazing. Also dude, that is Cynic's avatar.

Wiggles - I donno, rappers would probably hide behind a wall and take random pot-shots or pre-occupied with calling eachother "Niggas". Emo's would probably cry and cut themselves due to the amount of emotional stress they're under at the current point in time, and metalheads would probably spawn fvck loads of weaponry and just bomb the shight out of everyone. Punks would most probably unite with metalheads and do the same but just running around ripping people to pieces with their bare hands (whilst bullets bounce off them). My interpretation anyway.

TOG - Look at how its portrayed most of the time. Some rapper kid referred to his music as "beats" whilst I refer to mine as a "kingdom". Half the time, the songs are about seizing control and having a sense of power which is where the empire type thing comes in. Just listen to Dimmu Borgir's "Proginies Of The Great Apocolypse" or it could be portrayed as a "realm of supernatural being" type of thing where you have bands such as Darkthrone and "Dance of the Eternal Shadows". It's pritty hard to explain but its nice to know i'm not the only one who thinks this way.

I was disagreeing with the statement that BM itself is a kingdom and how fans think that they are somehow a part of this "musical kingdom".

In rap "beats" is a musical term that describes the style of looping one or more simple rhythms/melodies to create a song. In BM, "kingdom" has nothing to do with music. Therefor I find little validity in that comparison.

I understand your empirical metaphors and how you feel like your in control, etc. when you hear the music. That's great that you can connect positively with the music. I wasn't flaming you, just stating my opinion on the "kingdom" metaphor and how I think its a bit ridiculous when taken literally.

Though I still hold true to the fact that I believe black metal is mighty and mistical. Sure, its only music but how can you say "ONLY" music? Music is a source of inspiration for us all and makes people feel different things. Would you have refered to a famous classical piece from say the 1700's as just music? Back then, they were given terms such as "heavenly", which is no different to the metaphor that I've given for the term for the music that I find interesting from my era.

Another point I might add, is that black metal is all for theatrics. A few things we learn in the Performing Arts sector is that you have to make your certain audience get an emotional response, most black metalists tend to go for a sense of authority which again links into the fact that I call it a kingdom. It isn't ridiculous, its what they want - and if they succeed, it just shows how good they are at what they do.

Well, for one I never said it was "only music" - for me personally music is my main passion, so music obviously isn't "just" music to me. That's why I can sometimes go overboard and be pretty cut throat in genre splitting discussions. I just said that BM wasn't a kingdom. And for the record, I like BM. Just so ya know.

Keep in mind that a lot of classical music was written for churches or staunchley religious royalty. The metaphor "heavenly" can describe an emotion (heavenly = bliss = goosebumps = great music), but was also appropriate for the setting. So I find that term legit. You wanna call BM a kingdom go ahead. I'll just take it tongue and cheek because it isn't. Like XwigglesX said way back, its a scene.

True, black metal bands are typically theatrical, and that does make for a great live show...although that too is a bit ridiculous (KISS rip-offs, I'm surprised Gene hasn't sued them all :P), but that depends on personal taste and opinion (as are most art/music/theatre discussions).

However, there is a line between true emotion and melodrama, and I think the point Terminator is making is that you seemed to have crossed it. Sort of like when an emo says "Oh, my life is like the torment of a crying feather in Autumn" or whatever the f*** they say - I hear a black metal version of that when you mention kingdom.

The reason why Abbath can say it and make it cool? I'm in a bit of a rush so I'll have to leave it for now...

Hey dudes, I really haven't got a problem (though being compared to an emo is a bit of a slap in the face), but as I keep saying - its my point of view. Of course I know its a scene! Though I don't view it in that way at all. The reason why I don't like the word "scene" is because scenes don't last forever - genre's do. Plus is there really a line to cross or is that the boundries between "normal" and "different"? My view's different to a normal persons view on it however, I keep getting the feeling your dropping hints about lack of knowledge or something which I pritty much hope isn't the case. I have a strong passion for metal in general, and this is pritty much what I think of a certain brand of it.

Genre and scene are the same in the way that people who belong to a scene all share the same taste in genre. So if the scene dies then so does the genre.
Deathcore is the latest fag, bands like Suice Silence will, if they still exist will move on and change their style. Which will kill their old scene and then the genre will die.
But then on the other hand their are the umbrella sounds like Metal, Punk and in a way Hardcore that will last for as long as people are p***ed off.
Everybody's passion here is music, and it means something to all of us but like the song says "music can alter modes and talk to you, but can it load a gun for you and coc k it too?"

Now talk so that when I wake up I'll have something good to read.

Hey Wiggles, no dude I completely agree with you. I just realised that it can never die if people are in that certain mood - thats the genius of underground metal. Dude I am 100% off this topic - I feel a lot fvcking better after just realising it and all I want to do is go to sleep and fvcking get the next sh1tty school day over.

Sorry if we're seeming to gang up on your fairly subjective and innocent stance CTW - the main reasons would be is that we all represent each other as metal fans, and you're young so we're trying to help.

Abbath and his fictional metal kingdom Blashyrkh is cool, because it's like the worlds most serious joke. Or the worlds most humorous deadly-serious topic. Hmm I'm not doing a very good job of explaining, I think the emo sentence explained it better. Read that sentence, and feel the lack of connection to the truth of what they're saying vs. how they feel. Do they REALLY feel like a feather in Autumn? Or are those just washy words to try and put emotion into how they feel? Same with kingdom - do you really feel black metal is "a country with a king as head of state"?
