Rezin's Jon Blank Dies Of Drug Overdose
Jon Blank reportedly passed this past Saturday night. Jon was well-known in Maryland and beyond for his time plowing riffs with his band REZIN, and was the bassist on Scott "Wino" Weinrich's critically-praised solo album "Punctuated Equilibrium."
An official statement from Jon's sister, Andrea, reads as follows:
"Dear friends - There is no easy way to write this email, and while I would rather call you all personally, I just can't find my voice right now without crying. Jon passed away Saturday night from a drug overdose. That is what we believe/know at this time. He just got back in the States from an amazing European music tour on Friday. He was doing so well and, well, I guess he thought he was invincible and wanted to celebrate his return. I can't even begin to imagine how he really felt though.
"The funeral is this Tuesday, May 5, at 2pm at King David Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Hwy., Falls Church, VA 22042. More details will be in Monday & Tuesday's Wash Post.
"Thank you all so much for your overflow of calls and love and support. Know that I truly appreciate it and I am so thankful to have so many friends who knew Jon and love us. Love, Andrea (Jon's Loving Sister)"

Jon was an amazing bass player in addition to being a complete musician. He could cover a multitude of Dylan tunes on an acoustic without a hitch. He could play Black Crowes or the heaviest of metal riffs. It didn't matter. He simply loved music. Whenever I saw him he was smiling. His band Resin is amazing and their singer has one of the best voices I have ever heard live. I have seen them on a number of occasions and they always rocked. As much time and effort Jon put into his music along with the talent he and the rest of his band mates have it is upsetting that they never got their fair dues. Much love guys, you all rock! Jon is in a better place now but my heart goes out to the band and his friends and family.
My whole family is sadened by this we are family in Florida. I want Thank all who have such kind words to say about Jon. He will be Missed we all have such great memories of him and no one can take that from us.
Love to his Grandmother, Andrea, Barb and Barry.

Jon was a great guy and incredibly gifted, well-rounded musician. He was also an addict who struggled, as many of us do, to stay clean. He knew as much as anyone where the path of hard drugs would lead him. He tried to get to meetings and at least at one point recently had a year of clean time. He was so excited to be going on tour with Wino.
Someone wrote up above that "often the only way out is an accidental death." If only that were true, it would make Jon's death the only thing that could have happened, and maybe less tragic somehow. But the tragedy, for me, is that there are are ways to stay off the drugs that kill so many addicts so often. I sat with Jon in meetings every week, with people who had 10, 20, even 30 years clean. I so long to imagine him at 50, 55 years old, celebrating 20 years of clean time, being a role model for some young rock and rollers and remembering back in the day when he was struggling.... I wish Jon could have kept going to meetings and getting the support he needed from other addicts in recovery.
why is it when someone dies suddenly everyone talks how great of a person they were? and another thing, how come drug addicts usual say they 'almost died'? they didn't almost die. people who survived cancers almost died. the drug addicts just had too much of a good time.
The only reason to overdose is because you are alive. Life isn't worth much. You can stave off death for a few years, but you'll be dead in 60 years anyway. Color your hair, don't smoke, don't drink, exercise, avoid the sun. You're still dead. Put it off 5, 10, 20 years. You're still dead. Did Reznik die early? Not really. He just died a bit earlier than the rest of us. Pave the way, Reznik.
"And if you go and prepare a place for us, come again and receive us unto yourself so that where you are, there we may be also."
R.I.P. Reznik.
My condolences to the family and all his friends. Like davidg said, he knew the path and where it would lead to. Having a year clean is just the begining, I know, I have just over a year clean myself and I struggle everyday with it. But sadly the bottom line is this, I can't change anyone, I can only change myself. It starts with being true to one's self first (honesty) for me, I deserve a better life and so far I can't complain, my life today is way better than I could've ever imagined it. But I must put the fellowship into action and be willing to take advice from others like my sponsor. My best thinking almost got me killed too!!! I have seen many people in the last year die from an overdose or what-not and it's a constant reminder to myself of how addictions are usually fatal (sad to say) Once again, my heart goes out to all who knew him especially loved ones.
