Anathema Forced To Cancel Show Due To "Satanic" Controversy

The Liverpool Echo has reported the following story about Anathema being forced to cancel a show over allegations that they worship Satan:

A LIVERPOOL band about to play to more than 1,000 fans in Tunisia had the plug pulled on their concert when authorities believed rumors they were Satanists.

Anfield group Anathema were ready to perform a sold out gig in the capital Tunis when they were told they could not go ahead.

They hoped to reschedule for a couple of night later but the gig was canceled a second time.

Guitar technician Darryl Anthony wrote in his blog: “Our promoter informed us that somebody has informed the Tunisian interior ministry that Anathema are Satan worshipers who eat black cats and drink their blood.

“The ministry have requested song lyrics to peruse over the weekend in order to put their minds at rest.”

I don't know about the "Satanic" label, but Anathema put out a very good gloom/doom/death album in Serenades/Crestfallen. Truly beutifully brutal. One of my favorites.

I'm not even a fan, but this begs the question,

"What century are we living in?"

Thank God there are people out there thinking for us. Otherwise we might seek out entertainment.

Anathema are simply a great band. Sucks this happened to them. The ridiculous comment didn't even draw a small amount of criticism from the organisers?

lol, "eat black cats and drink their blood." Wow.

Whats most funny about this is who Anathema are today (a prog tinged alt-rock outfit) vs who they were (straight up doom and then melodic goth-doom)...The Anathema of today (or at any point really) are no more "Satanic" than Radiohead or Vast...But now they don't even sound the part at this point. I guess North Africa is still a little more religiously squeamish than the US south and mid-west...

Amir, it shouldn't matter what their religion is. They should not have to cancel a gig due to it.

On an unrelated note, I just wanted to make sure that everyone had gotten their ceremonial Easter headgear already. The zombie Lord rises today, people, so you need to make sure to properly protect your brains from his ravenous hunger for human flesh.

We, as Tunisian Anathema fans, were the first concerned by this scandalous diffamation!
In order to relate the facts as they really took place, you should notice that this was the result of a childish sabotage. Blaming our country for this kind of problems, occuring everywhere in the world, is really unfair. Knowing that this guy (saboteur) has some connections in the Ministry, he convinced them to cancel the gig with such a stupid pretext, which makes us really ashamed.
Though we publicly adress again our apologises to Anathema, in the name of all the Tunisian fans. Everyone here is bustling about in order to avoid such sabotage to happen again.
The band already knows how much they have fans over here and they were positively surprised of our sense of communication and how warmly we welcomed them.
After all, we sincerely hope that Anathema will come back in June as they've promised their fans here, and we will prevent anybody from cancelling the gig, since we're now prepared to the worst...
We expect that this accident will not affect our country's metal stage in a negative way, as fans here are not responsible of what happened, so is the promoter. It was only the result of a shabby sabotage.
Great thanks to Anathema for everything that they've done to minimize our inconsolable disappointment.

Truer word have never been spoken by a loyal fan, well said thuringwethil.

There are certain parts of my country where a crazy and self-righteous minority intrude on the good times of others...It's a universal kind of crazy, I don't think many of us (not myself, for sure) blame your country, we're just surprised when it happens somewhere other than our own backyard. I'm sure Anathema understand too.
