Chris Cornell Denies Led Zeppelin Rumours

MTV News has issued the following report from Chris Harris:
Former SOUNDGARDEN and AUDIOSLAVE frontman CHRIS CORNELL has spoken out for the first time about rumors that he's been asked to fill in for ROBERT PLANT on a proposed LED ZEPPELIN reunion tour. The trek would feature original guitarist JIMMY PAGE, original bassist JOHN PAUL JONES and Jason Bonham taking over on drums for his late father, John Bonham.
Cornell has been mentioned - along with FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl, former VAN HALEN frontman SAMMY HAGAR, WHITE STRIPES mastermind Jack White and ALTER BRIDGE's Myles Kennedy - as a potential Plant fill-in. Plant has already said that he wouldn't take part in the tour.
"I have not been approached so far to fill in for Robert Plant on the upcoming Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be," Cornell told MTV News. "I've heard that from about 200 people now, and it might be one of those situations where it's just an online rumor or it might be true. But if you see anyone from Led Zeppelin around, let me know. I think I should actually fill in for Jimmy Page on the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss tour."

no one but maybe david coverdale or whomever the dude that sang for the hair band Kingdom Come should attempt to sing Zepplin. All the names mentioned so far would be a complete f'n joke. Led Zepplin is to Rock what Jesus is to christians. You can't just plug a so called front man that can't keep the sound right. No one in this group could even imagine one Zep song without the sound that made it that way. To post 7 Paul rogers is no way near freddie but he is a bad ass.
So Cornell does solo albums that are more mellow in between doing his heavier stuff with Audioslave (so-so results) and Soundgarden (a giant from the 90s rock scene) and somehow he lost his balls? Well then I guess so has Robert Plant. Cornell has the range and as witnessed on his solo tour pulls off Whole Lotta Love just fine. Plant was a solid singer, there are plenty of singers since him who are every bit as good, Cornell fits into that category nicely. As does Myles Kennedy.
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Lol, I didn't know Jesus sucked Christians. Cornell had his moments in the first two Soundgarden albums, i'll give you that, but that's about all I can give. Audioslave was some weak a$$ crap. AND, his current solo album (with Timbaland) is just down right aweful. Cornell has disgraced his entire legacy (if he really ever had one).
Chris Cornell pushed it too hard with Soundgarden and busted his vocal chords. He had to lay off the gas pedal after that. I think he could easily fill in for Plant. Listen to "Jesus Christ Pose" or "Rhinosaur" by Soundgarden and tell me that he isn't up to it...
It's not just about the range A. Many people have done Zepplin stuff in the past and have the range to do it, but here's the problem: They do selected songs from the zep book, NOT the entire Zep setlist. Stop and think about that for a minute. As a one off, it sounds great and compliments the rest of your set, but in it's entirety it would be overwhelming and people would "hate Cornell for what he did to this song... Oh and did you hear what he did to that song?... That was my favorite Zep song too". Unless Plant agrees to do this thing anyone who takes this gig is going to really be up against it.
A lot of people here are confusing Cornell's voice with Cornell's material. He HAS the voice. It's just that some of the headbangers here don't consider him "worthy" to get the gig given his more ropey recent material. I had a listen to Myles Kennedy last night. He is hot favourite for the job. His voice is as good as Cornells but he wouldn't carrying all of the baggage that Cornell has. Maybe he is a better fit for it.
Brett: Although I can't remember the names of them (I was never a huge alternative fan) I had them in cassette form. I meant the first two (the second being the one with "hands all over" on it). Keep thinking what you will my friend, I'm not here to force my opinions on anyone, but in my opinion; anyone who takes this gig runs the risk of ruining their career by accepting it. Time will tell. In addition, as Kali pointed out on the Steven Tyler thread, even if Plant does it now it will be for the $$$ and not the music so this is doomed to fail at every level. Lastly, if you really think that people will come out and praise Cornell for doing a better job on the legendary Zepplin material; you are sadly mistaken and possibly delusional. The best possible outcome he could hope for is "he did a good job with it; but it's still not the Led Zepplin we all grew up with".
The main problem is that Robert Plant's voice is now weaker than a mouse's fart. He is not up to it anymore. I heard some of the concert from the O2 arena and his voice was piss poor. It's time to get someone with the pipes in to do it. It worked well when Chris Robinson took over when he played Zep stuff with Page at the Greek theatre. Why not again ?
I heard this on the radio today, and they seem to think the Alter Bridge (boring band) guy is going to do it and Creed would do a reunion in his absense.
If this does happen I hope they find someone good who can pull it off. Overall I'm sick of hearing the rumors.

First Lenny Kravitz, then Myles Kennedy, then Jack White, then Steven Tyler and now Chris Cornell. Why would the Led Zeppelin members still alive want to continue without Mr. Plant?
