I love power metal... But I hate dragonforce. Just because you can play fast doesn't mean every song has to have a 5 minute guitar wank fest. And it doesn't mean that every song has to have the same intro, verse, pre chorus, chorus pattern. Gah I hate this band they're like the nsync of power metal.
^Yazdan, the only reason it's hard to play is because it's so f***ing fast, not because it's good, or even complex. Don't get fooled by these queers.
EpicNeckBeard: FUKCIN THANK YOU. Post 3 sums up this band quite nicely in my opinion. Power Metal is fine and dandy, but Dragonforce brings the genre down in the same way that bands like Atreyu, A7x, and BFMV do. It's disgusting and discraceful to Metal as a whole for them to be as popular and revered as they are.
Now Playing: Divine Heresy- "Bleed the Fifth"
Hey well Simon I think the interface of the Coleg Powys Moodle is exceptionally user friendly, it allows for easy navigation throughout the VLE, it also allows for all its functions to be easily. It feels smooth to use and is a joy to be a part of the Coleg Powys Moodle family. http://online.coleg-powys.ac.uk/ .
Simon what do you think of the blog and forum sections of the VLE?
meh, take them or leave them, they aint getting any better with each passing album.valley of the damned i live, but inhuman rampage was ok at best. guitar wankery and high speed pleasuring of fretboards dont make a band..
Still. always got the heavy stuff to fall back on in my cd collection.
np - Obituary - Frozen in time
Come on... the only reason your bashing Dragonforce is because they've become popular - I respect Dragonforce for having the balls to bring something new to the power metal table rather than so many other bands who are -
And if you don't believe me there's a negative-bias here how the hell did a band like Stratovarius get so much love in the news of their break-up? Why are there no slanderings of posts of Dragonland, Powerquest, Dream Evil, Falconer etc??
I'm not trying to say you need to love Dragonforce or power metal but I think there are a lot of people out there who need to readjust their negative view of Dragonforce, in the metal community in general.
Now Playing: Cannibal Corpse - "I Will Kill You"
I think Cynic actually might be on to something there. I like Iced Earth and Destiny's End (with the exception of their second album, which was decidedly uninspired), and I've liked what I've heard of the samples of Fairyland so far, so the genre certainly has some appeal for me but for some reason I've always been averse to trying out Dragonlord. I'm never inclined to trust a metal album that you can buy at Walmart because it seems like if it's that popular it's probably something along the same line as Avenged Sevenfold or Atreyu, which don't do it for me at all. I'm going to have to give Dragonlord an honest shot and see if it really deserves all the negative press or if people just want to feel underground and elite by hating it.
Cynic my views of DragonForce is a that of a band who simply plays as fast as they can just for the hell of it. We have all proven that faster doesn't mean good (Doom Metal is proof of this for the fans of it). Not to mention their drummer is aweful, the vocalist has some of the worst Vocals (Power Metal or otherwise) EVER, from what I hear they can't even play their songs live (never seen it myself but on my way to youtube to discover for myself). At any rate why write a song if you can't play it live (Burzum or Xasthur don't count seeing as how they don't intend to play their songs live but its not like their songs are that complicated anyway)? Not to mention their songs are so over the top cheesy even by power metal standard. To the point, with exception of Herman Li and Sam Totman in the studio, DragonForce sucks. I'd rather take a band like Wintersun or Ensiferum over these high pitched vocals of any band anyway.
I love your responses cruor!
I personally don't give a sh** what a band sounds like live unless I'm reviewing a live show. Why write a song you can't play live? Why paint a painting you'll never be able to reproduce in every stroke? I wish I could find you the quote from Billy Corgan where he was asked why he layers his music so much when he will never be able to reproduce it live - the answer of course is that why would you ever hold yourself back from producing the best art, the best sounding album possible? Lastly of course I'd ask - have you ever seen DF live?
Play fast for the hell of it? I don't really get that as an negative, what are you trying to say? Are Slayer or Nile open for the same critisizm? They are over the top? I don't know, they seem pretty standard in terms of cheese-factor compared to Manowar and the like, and if you can't handle cheesy then power metal is hardly the place to go. Cheesy isn't always a negative term either. The vocals? Meh, again that's personal preference I don't think DragonForce's could be said to 'suck' empirically in anyway. Just like death metal vocals, power metal vocals aren't for everyone. I'm certainly not saying they're godlike, they have major issues with being stuck in the same sound in my opinion but I still rate them.
Now Playing: Violator - "UxFxYx (United For Thrash)"
In my post I did say I have never seen them live, my friends have and they said it was not even worth my time. I realize that this is simply 2nd hand information and I still should attempt to see a live show but until than I can only go with the description that SEVERAL of my friends have said; such as the drummer not being able to keep up, sounding like random noise.
"the answer of course is that why would you ever hold yourself back from producing the best art, the best sounding album possible"
I believe that as well, why limit art? However some art I think should only be played live if it can fully be reproduced if not, if not than don't tour. I'm not criticizing DragonForce for recording the best art that they think they can possibly achieve. I'm criticizing them for attempting to recreate, to them, unrecreatable music in a live setting. Deicide, for example, doesn't play any of the songs from Legion live because the stuff is too complex for Glen to recreate in a live setting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_%28album%29).
I definetly agree that power metal vox, like death vox, is not for everyone (hell i dont care much for your typical death growls but I will put up with it to get some of the awesome music of some of the better DM bands such as Nile, Morbid Angel, Decapitated, or Vader) but power metal is the only genre of music where the vocals actually ruin the music for me, no matter how good a band such as Hammerfall, Manowar, or Helloween. I will admit that I like Edguy.
Playing fast for the hell of it. I might agree about Slayer if it weren't for tracks such as Dead Skin Mask, South of Heaven, or Mandatory Suicide perhaps Unas, Slayer of the Gods for Nile. But beyond that I backed myself into a corner with that one lol. Definetly didn't think that part all the way through (especially seeing how Immortal is one of my favorite bands of all time aswell as the Black Metal fanatic I am). I guess I was going for that they relied on speed for the basis of their sound but than I remembered the likes of Pleasure to Kill and and Pure Holocaust.
I am a HUGE Power Metal fan and love Dragonforce, and I think the reason why they sound so bad playing live is because they're too drunk to play, hahahaa!!! (Seriously, the lead singer has freakin beerholders on his mic and usually drinks 6 to 8 beers during each performance) I think it requires great talent to play the way they do, I haven't heard a band that can play melodic riffs faster than they can while hitting the right notes. And truly, I LOVE Power Metal and Dragonforce because they are so tacky, they're music is so happy and upbeat, it makes me want to climb a mountain and slide down from the heavens on a rainbow into a sea of golden meadows, hahahahahhahaa!!!! GO POWER METAL!!!! But I honestly have no problem with people disliking power metal, it is truly an acquired taste. And you have to be pretty dorky too.
Agreed Andrew, we're a special breed of dork :P
Oh sorry cruor I must have missed that, it definitely is a bummer when live bands don't live up to expectations. Then again you find some bands that will blow you away live compared to cd so hey, you win some you lose some.
It took me quite a while to come around to power metal vocals. I think listening to copious amounts of Watchtower somehow brought me around to that. Hey - it might come in time you never know!
Man Immortal - I can remember how floored I was with the speed and battery of Blizzard Beasts! I first came across them from the truest, kultest vid ever for "Call Of The Wintermoon" - Have you seen it?
Now Playing: Type O Negative - "Everything Dies"
^O god man, you mean the video with the band running around a forest in corpse paint and Abbath breathing fire, Gene Simmons style, every other minute to one of the greatest songs ever? You definetly can't forget that wizard hat and cape that the drummer was wearing also. I loved every minute of the kvltness of The Call of the Wintermoon video. Now that requres a different kind of speical breed of dork, lol.
Some of these people have good points, while others need to smarten up and learn to appreciate something different, or at least not attack others for liking Dragonforce. I'm a fan myself, but that is because I enjoy their sound, unlike most here. I agree they are samey with tempo's and song structure, but there are also alot of differences that are hard to notice for the average person. People say the guitaring is the same every song but it really isn't.
Think about the genre they have given themselves. Extreme Power Metal. for one, you have to have lots of speed in a genre like that. you have to have lots of power metal type drumming/guitaring but you have to take it to the next level, hence the "Extreme". This is exactly what DF have done. You can't notice it but the guitar solo's are very complex, not just mindless shredding like everyone assumes. There's a hell of alot of variety in the solo's. The deal is, they have to shred, they have to be fast, and perhaps they shred too much and need to branch out more, but they've created an epic soundscape with "Inhuman Rampage" that just couldn't be done without using such programs as Protools so much. the production is part of their sound, it's part of the art they created. It's part of the driving and uplifting force that they are.
Only hardcore fans will ever understand this completely. That's understandable, but atleast appreciate that DF have brought something new to the power metal genre.
By the way, their next album WILL be different. They are smart enough to know that more and more people will get sick of them if they make the same music over and over. They did the same thing with IR. screaming background vocals, new keyboard sounds, the occasional clean guitar tone and acoustic... list goes on. Also, Herman Li's new sig guitar doesn't have 9 different tone settings for nothing. He will use them.
wow yall have obsolutly no taste in good music!!!!!they have an amazing singer, some of the most insane guitarists that i've ever seen, they have the best drummer, and their keyboard player is just..wow hey are so amazing,so if you dont like them, then just f--k off ,music good music hating bi-ches!!!
Heh. I used to be a big fan of Dragonforce 2 years ago. Then I discovered much better stuff that doesn't involve pure speed. And seriously, their singer sucks so much it's ridiculous.
I'll probably take a look at the new album, but chances are I'll end up downloading it instead of buying it, unless what I'm hearing is REALLY good.
