It's weird how certain games can have that effect on people, but not others. I love COD4 (with the little time I get to play). Played Halo3 once and it was so SLOW. I think Quake 2 would feel fast in comparison. I always liked the fast shooters like Doom and Unreal Tournament (original) the most.
I liked Gears of War (I'm a big fan of anything Epic puts out - I worked for them for 4.5 years and know a lot of the developers), but it had control issues and weapon balance issues (mostly the ridiculousness of the chainsaw range and invincible animation). In all honesty, nothing has topped UT (99) for me. Now-dated graphics aside, that game had the perfect gameplay, speed, and weapon balance.
YAY an FPS thread!
Agree with deathbringer, Halo is painfully slow. I Can't stand it!....HATE is not a strong enough word....though I can tolerate Halo more than A7X, I suppose.
COD 4 is a god among fps's. So fast--so unforgiving, brilliant weapons, perks, rewards system.
The new Unreal on PS3 is pretty fun too, the story is garbage but who really plays it for that? Still love the shock and bio rifles after all these years. Pretty weapons, nice vehicles.
Speaking of shock and bio...Bioshock is genius....The main reason to own an X-box, seriously.
Unreal 99 is -still- the favorite fps of a friend of mine who was outlandishly unstoppable on it. He would let his gf taunt people via headset while he racked the ultra kills.
Gears of War was fun for two weekends, now you can't make me go near it.
Is anyone old enough (you'd be in 20's-30's by now) to remember 007 Goldeneye on N-64. Talk about setting the standard. I still love the sound of the DD 44.
Now Playing: Opeth - "Godhead's Lament"
Man, Doom 2: Hell on Earth was one of the first video games I ever played all the way through. 1995, I think.
BioShock is the shooter that all the other franchises should be copying. The be-all and end-all.
Gears of War is alright, action is tight, and I like the visual effects while running. Worth playing for graphical content alone.
If you think Halo 3 was too slow, then you need to step up the difficulty. I played it on Legendary and it was a most amazing experience.
COD4 was okay. Online was awesome, but the solo campaign had me tearing my fxcking hair out. It required a little more strategy than I was prepared for.
Goldeneye is Goldeneye. I was just talking to a friend yesterday about how you had to get some device from Dr. Doak, and all I ever did was coat the ground at his feet with mines and then stand back and watch him and his partners get blown to smithereens. Classic. I always played karate chop only matches with OddJob because the other players had to adjust their axis to hit you! The hardest I've ever laughed playing a video game, for sure.
Doom, BioShock, and Halo are my all time favorites, though.
On a side note, does anyone remember that really old FPS for, maybe it was the PS1, I know it was on the 3DO, where you were the chef on a ship and the ship got run over with aliens, and your weapons were frying pans and big-ass drills and it was way super violent for the time? PO'ed was the name.
Wolfenstein and Quake are givens.
Agree with Crawford 100%. My favorite level of Goldeneye was facility just so i could play mind games with all the innocent scientists. I'd spend hours turning their white coats red. Bioshock is the future, what an unbelievable game. You have not played Halo until you've played it on legendary, and as far as I'm concerned Doom3 is the greatest game ever made. I noticed no one here has mentioned the Darkness. One of my favorite new FPS's, its quite a metal game actually. Mike Patton does the voice for the Darkness itself.
im not in my 20s yet, but i remember playing 007 on the N64 years ago. it was with my oldest cousin, hes 24 now. that game was pretty addicting. UT is pretty fun too. im was kinda addicted to the multiplayer on halo, never tried that on COD4 yet. and crawford, speaking of the PS1, my favorite games on that were syphon filter (the first one only), the THPS series, and DDR with the controller, haha. i know, i was too young to get good at the pads, i havent played DDR since, though i had fun with that. i pretty sure most of you wouldnt play ddr cuz the music would annoy you.
iEatBabies: "I noticed no one here has mentioned the Darkness."
i was just about to until you posted that! f***er! lol
Definetly a fun game for me, twisted, intricate gameplay at times, and a very gothic* (traditional meaning, not contemporary) feel to all the scenery. Fighting was fun even before I got the powers, which only upped the ante really. Solid game In my Opinion.
BTW, can anyone tell me if "Army of Two" was made by anyone who had a hand in Gears of War? The grenade system, as well as the graphics(although finessed a bit) seem lifted from GoW, and I'm starting to love "AoT" dearly, so I'm curious.
Now Playing: Rush- "Tom Sawyer"
that's an old picture of avenged sevenfold.
zacky doesnt have emo bangs. he's working the slick creepy look. ew.
actually he hasnt had the emo bangs since waking the fallen.
they look more mainstream now and i still say synyster gates lost a fight with a weedwacker. cuz i dont know why girls go crazy over his hair. weird.
lol.....anyways.
