Bassist Todd Evans Quits Gwar
Band Photo: Gwar (?)
Todd Evans, talented musician and portrayer of Beefcake the Mighty, bass player for the legendary GWAR, has announced that he is leaving the band after five years of invaluable service. Yearning for his true instrument, guitar warrior Todd will continue to jam with his new group, MOBILE DEATHCAMP.
Todd was without a doubt the most physically intimidating Beefcake GWAR has ever known, and truly made the character his own with his sharp with and broad acting range.
MOBILE DEATHCAMP will reportedly hit the road this summer as one of the support acts for GREEN JELLŸ, the resurrected American comedy heavy metal/punk rock band.

Tragic. I live in the city where Todd is from (Toledo, Ohio) and it was so awesome for all the old club rockers around here to see Todd in a band like GWAR which we all idolize, after watching him tear it up in tons of great local bands that are now legends in my area (Lazy American Workers, for one).
I know Todd has a new family and touring is hard on him, so I understand. It is a drag, though. Best of luck, and here's to Gwar getting Casey Orr back in. *fingers crossed*
Gwar sucks, I can't respect any band whose on stage attire includes loincloths and cod pieces.
But I do respect gwar simply because they know they suck. They know they couldn't make it anywhere with their talent( or lack thereof) so they decided to max out there credit cards at Halloween express. So I guess they're not all that bad.
???????????????????????????????????????????????????
Why is it that people automatically assume a lack of talent when a band has an image? It sounds like most of you are making a prejudicial gut reaction to a band known widely for an image, skipping any investigation and hey-no-brain-presto 2+2 = 4 and it must be the case GWAR has no talent.
Seriously, how many of you have actually listened to "Immortal Corrupter" or "Battlelust"? Or any of their early albums? Those are not rhetorical questions. I mean they're a punk/metal band not Necrophagist so to criticize their technicality is moronic. And why then come into a GWAR thread to say they have no talent and yet leave other bands on the same level of instrumental talent (let's say every second BM band) alone?
"Gwar sucks, I can't respect any band whose on stage attire includes loincloths and cod pieces."
That's a shame to hear you're too superficial to the enjoy the music, that goes for DeathInEye too. I suppose you're bands have to be good looking for you to enjoy them no? No fat lead singers?

Lol Cynic I was being sarcastic about the image thing because people argue the same thing over other bands who utilize costuming and makeup. I've read "I'm so happy Mudvayne stopped painting their faces" so many times, as if it actually makes the music change in sound. I'll give these guys props for their intellect all day, but the music doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather read a book by them all. But dude, don't ever imply that I'm shallow. I'm an aspiring vocalist in a fvcking wheelchair, you don't get much tougher on the scale of obstacles than that, so you can take your distorted assumptions and shove em up your ignorant anus!
Well all I had to go on was "People disregard Slipknot all the time because of their image. It's absolutely a reason." and it's pretty impossible to tell you're being sarcastic there, I can only go on what I read. "No fat lead singers?" - Now that's sarcasm!
I totally agree with your last post though, for people to judge GWAR as a band by their music not their image was all I was after - if you don't like it then fair enough, too each his own. But I sense that not a lot of other users in here are as non-judgmental as you from their posts. Good luck with your music, post up some links if you have any. But just like I endeavour to not judge anyone by their appearance in life, I'm not going to treat you different from anyone else.
I figured there was enough polarity between those two statements, but now that I reread them, no, haha. My sarcasm is often very subtle...Why I hardly ever use it, but I thought it fit here. I do apologize for telling you to metaphorically missuse your anus. =)
Anyway, I agree, the loin cloth one was definitely out of line, but I think that's more homophobia than image. I could be wrong.
And I would never ask for handouts...even moreso since I have more obstacles.
Regarding GWAR
I have a few of their songs, some good some bad. Very hit or miss. As far as live: It should be metal doctrine to see them live once in your life.....Like a pilgrimage to Mecca.
I caught them opening for the Misfits in '99 at Bogarts with low expectations.
Wow.
The spectacle alone makes it one of the best things I've seen this side of Metallica, Tool or Dimmu. They play reasonably well and they stick to proven songs. The red and green sh** NEVER comes out of your shoes, and weirdly they have alot of (not obese, zitty or crazy) cute girl fans...I'm stumped.
Regarding Cynic
In my too many years coming to and working for this site I have yet to encounter someone who can so rationally, brutally and eloquently level such insurmountable arguments.
Personally I think masks, corpse paint etc are useless but people who follow -or- disregard a band based on its image should rely on their ears first.

Personally, I don't like GWAR's image, and I don't like their music much either. No big arguments here, I just think they're an all-round over-rated band. And all that nonsense about aliens or whatever just makes me cringe.

Gwar kicks ass.I think that they are a fun band to see live.As far as Todd leaving I wish him the best.I met him at a Black Label Society show in Cleveland and he is a really cool guy.As far as all you Gwar haters you are entitled to your opinions and I respect that but cmon they have been around forever and I feel they deserve a little more respect than some of the crappy posts I have been seeing.
Ok, just to keep it clear, I think these guys are brilliant on a subject level. The same level as Manson. They make statements about society by invoking the problems they see. With that said, age has nothing to do with it. Modonna has been around forever but that does not entitle her to any amount of respect. Actions determine what respect you deserve, and though it is in a flamboyant way, Gwar's actions, in my opinion, grant them an amount of respect...pretty much all the respect I give them. Musically I respect the fact that, in my opinion, they're playing midlevel music in very difficult situations (those costumes have got to complicate things). And I respect them on an entertainment level. Live shows ARE entertainment. You cannot deny that. But they do not appeal to my ear, so I choose not to listen.
Haha - well thanks RM? I think most users will also know you're not a user to mess with in a darkened cyber alley such as MU ;P As far as GWAR's concerned, I think the vocals of Oderus Urungus aka David Brockie are the biggest drawing point for me, just a great delivery and unique voice.

And so continues the revolving doors of GWAR! I hope they return to the "Violence Has Arrived" sound soon and stop messing with the -core sound.
