In Flames Bassist Loses Leg, Gigantour Still a Go
In Flames bassist Peter Iwers lost the lower half of his left leg Monday night due to complications from a dislocated knee. Iwers was injured in late January after slipping on some ice at a photo shoot in the Red Square while on a mini-tour of Russia.
“I'm fine now, but it truly sucked a few days ago,” he explained shortly after the initial incident occurred. “I went to a Russian hospital to drain blood from the knee and to get an x-ray, where I also got support for the leg. Then I took a lot of painkillers.”
"Peter did injure himself pretty badly while in Russia. Peter slipped on some ice and hurt his knee badly and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Obviously in a lot of pain, he probably shouldn't have left the hospital,” an official statement from the band said.
It isn’t certain if complications arose as a result of the initial injury or if the infection was acquired in a Moscow hospital. Regardless, the show must go on.
“I should be fine in a few weeks – a month or so – but I won't be lifting a lot of stuff in the nearest future,” Iwers managed to jest in light of the situation. “It’s healing slowly and it’s healing as it should be. But it takes time. I never thought that something could hurt that much, though. I don't recommend it!”
Iwers completed the band’s mini-tour of Russia while playing seated in a chair on stage, and will complete the band’s scheduled 18-month tour – which includes 30 dates with Gigantour and a headlining stint in Europe – in a similar fashion.
“It’s still pretty painful, but I’ll be okay,” he assures.
