Catching Up On Local NJ Metal With Ken From Centralia

Formed in late 2005, Centralia began attacking the New Jersey metal scene. The band quickly found a stable line-up and began to crank out heavy tunes with groove. They have rocked the stage with the likes of Anal Cunt, From A Second Story Window, Mensrea, Spur, and countless local metal/hardcore actts. Fast forward to 2008, and Centralia are in the midst of writing a full length album and planning many more shows. In addition, Centralia now have their own web domain, which you can check out centraliaburns.com. I caught up with Ken, one of the guitarists, via email.

Fetal Feast: What's going on in the Centralia camp?

Ken: We've been in the writing process the last couple of months; the five of us took some time off from shows to get some new tunes out, and a two of them are finished. You can check out "Aisle 6" and "The Awakening" on our myspace.

FF:You're one of two guitarists in the band, and an original member. Tell me about the beginning of Centralia.

Ken: Well, back in about 1998-1999, Matt and I were in a band named "Increate" with another friend of ours by the name of Joe. Eventually down the line after the band fell through, Joe and I decided to rekindle our music interests and start fresh. Over the horror channel online forums, Joe came across our bassist, sweet Lou. He was so damn luscious, we just couldn't refuse him a position into our regime. The three of us then began the writing process seamlessly shortly thereafter. after working with a drum machine for a short while, I approached Matt about drumming for us at the bar, and while downing numerous alcoholic beverages, we became a full band unit once more. After some trials and tribulations, we decided that it was in the best interest of the band itself to acquire another singer; Matt had worked with mark in a previous project, and henceforth became a member of the Centralia family. Joe, our newest addition, had worked with Lou in prior musical endeavors; likewise with Mark, he immediately stood out as a fantastic addition to the band, and a great guy to lose brain cells with.

FF: How long have you been playing guitar? What gear do you trust?

Ken: I've been molesting the strings since the tender age of 14. I had taken lessons until about the age of 17, and began self instruction shortly afterwards. If i had to pick one company to trust gearwise, I would have to go with jackson. I purchased an RR-1 Rhoads model last year, and have had nothing but love for it. If it had a moist hole, well...do the math.

FF: The band added a second guitarist earlier last year. How is that working out?

Ken: Fantastic. Joe is a great guy and an awesome musician, and we all get along great. He is without a doubt a valuable addition to our band. Our twisted senses of humor always make for a good time.

FF:What venues has Centralia ravaged to date?

Ken: We've been to Jimmy's Seaside, Finnagin's, The Conduit, and of course, Championship Bar and Grill just to name a few.

FF: Do you have any favorite or particularly memorable shows, or favorite venues to play?

Ken: One of our best shows to date was with our buddies in the band "Lesser Being" at Jimmy's Seaside about a year ago. The atmosphere and crowd reaction was second to none, and we all had a blast that night.

FF:Do you have a favorite song to play live?

Ken: Without a doubt, i'd have to go with "the awakening". It's so fucking aggressive and ruthless. It is, quite possibly, better then sliced bread.

FF: Are there any local metal acts that have impressed you?

Ken: Without a doubt; our friends in "Lesser Being" always give a great performance. Also, "None Shall Be Spared", "Isyou", "A Life Less Perfect", and many others have always caught my attention. There are many great local metal bands, and I that apologize that I cannot recall all of them.

FF: What guitarists have inspired your style? What musicians in general?

Ken: Kerry king and Jeff Hanneman from Slayer would be two of the most inspirational without a doubt; I bought the tablature for "Reign In Blood" the very day I bought my 1st guitar. Since then, many others such as John Petrucci, Buckethead, Steve Vai, Alexi Laiho; along with other musicians such as Paganini, Bach, Beethoven, and many others.

FF: Thank you for your time. In closing, what do you have to say to Centralia fans? What about people whose hearts haven't been touched by Centralia?

Ken: To the fans: thank you for all of your support and compliments; without you guys, we'd only be playing with ourselves ...hmm...I think I hear Mark [vocals] behind me....To the people whose hearts haven't been touched by Centralia: remember the first time you removed a bra and saw the wonders that it held back? Yeah...it's kinda like that the first time you hear/see us.... total refreshment. Your life is a hollow abyss of which must be filled with the luscious metal band that is...Centralia.
