Dave Mustaine Says He's Had Several Shots At Success

Nobody subtlety from a band named Megadeth. Nor does singer-guitarist Dave Mustaine. On the band's new album, "United Abominations," Mustaine, 46, draws upon reserves of youthful fury for tunes like "Amerikhastan" and "Washington Is Next!"

"Heavy metal is a barometer for our political well-being," says Mustaine, who plays Irving Plaza on Wednesday. "When we're facing war, music like this is popular because it's talking about aggression. I can't tell you one soldier I ever met that said he was listening to Duran Duran."

Despite a legendarily revolving lineup, Mustaine has managed to give Megadeth, which he formed in 1983, a consistent sound, with the tight crunch of his guitar always front and center.

"I like to punch my guitar in the stomach," says Mustaine. "I have the aggressive side covered, and the other guys have the beautiful side."

Several years back, though, fans saw a shockingly tender side of Mustaine in "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster," when he confronted drummer Lars Ulrich about the hurt that Ulrich and vocalist James Hetfield caused him when they kicked him out of the band in 1983.

But whatever water lies under that bridge, Megadeth, with more than 20 million albums sold worldwide, seems to have all the love it needs.

"I've had a couple of shots of success because of that relationship with the fans," he says, "just saying that I did some things I'm not proud of. It keeps us connected to them because we all do that."

Just stopped to say #1 you're an idiot and Dave Mustaine is a talented musician whose music has helped me through some tough spots. You rock Dave!

Dave sometimes thinks a little to much about himself, but he's still a great musician nonetheless.

What the f*** chuck? Dave never gave Megadeth a consistent sound, he softened and watered down his bands music over the years. And he really does think very highly of himself, f*** I'd bet he likes the smell of his own sh**s.

Yeah, maybe a consistent sound to someone who chucks everything heavier than Creed in the heavy metal bucket. United Abominations was like a better version of TSHF if you ask me, Gears of war had some cool parts and you could hear him go for the old technical thrash thing during it, but in the end he just kept reverting to rocky choruses and 4/4 averageness. It wasn't bad but if you ask me, I think Metallica are going to win this race. Yeah yeah, I brought up Metallica, sue me. Hey is that irony? :)

Dave Mustaine is a talented musician despite his flaws (he was in metallica), and besides nobody's perfect... I'm not a huge fan but I'll tip my hat any day of the week to someone who overcomes crippling nerve damage in the same arm that they play guitar with.

Whatever anyone thinks in here, the fact is that Megadeth has an amazing history and amazing success which can't be denied. Dave Mustaine has had his ups and downs like many of us. From a musician perspective he is very talented and if anyone can't agree with that then your a blatant idiot.

Megadeth has always been one of my top favorite bands. Alltime fav would be Metallica (pre Black Album). James Hetfield was my guitar teacher when I was teaching myself how to play. But now, with the horrible excuse for rock music that Metallica has been releasing, and the cash-in dramascape that was Some Kind of Monster; I got a lot more respect for Megadeth than I do for Metallica. Kudos to Dave for actually giving a damn!

His new album might not be the Thrash we wanted, but he did give us lots of guitar like he promised. I'm sorry but I love the songs Burnt Ice and Pray For Blood. Something about solo after solo songs just stick to me. I like shreding like John 5, but Mustaines dual solos are addicting for me. Whatever the genre is, I'm still a big fan of Megadeth (except for Risk) and Mustaine personally
