Kerry King Refuses To Watch "Fragile Old Men" Metallica In Some Kind Of Monster

A six-minute video interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King and drummer Dave Lombardo, conducted by Norway's NRK P3TV on the eve of the band's appearance at Hovefestivalen (a brand new five-day festival being held June 25-29 on the island of Tromøy, just outside the city of Arendal in Norway), has been posted at http://www21.nrk.no/p3tv/?bcpid=909858640&bclid=1028788533&bctid=979466591 . A few excerpts follow:

On black metal:

Kerry: "Black metal doesn't do anything for me."

Dave: "Me either. I watched it last night on TV and it was very disappointing."

Kerry: "I think they're [black metal bands] all very similar too."

Dave: "They do. They do. They went from another band to another band, and it sounded almost like the same band."

On SLAYER's musical legacy:

Kerry: "I don't think there's ever been a time when somebody could have said, 'SLAYER really missed with this record. I'm not gonna go see them.' And I think that earns your longevity, that earns you… keeps you relevant, and the fans just admire that."

On perfoming live:

Kerry: "The lights go out, you hear the intro going… Game on."

Dave: "We're gonna pummel them — we're just gonna destroy them. And that's my mentality up there. And when the crowd doesn't respond, I tell my drum tech, 'They're a bunch of ungrateful bastards. They don't appreciate the energy that we're giving them."

Kerry: "When I walk to the stage, there is no 'fail.' Doesn't exist."

Dave: "When I play drums, there is no 'fail.'"

On METALLICA:

Kerry: "I used to admire METALLICA and I don't wanna see them going to fucking therapy. I mean, that's fucking… keep it in the band, man."

Dave: "Yeah, that's personal stuff. There's stuff that you shouldn't be laundering."

Kerry: "I won't watch that movie ['Metallica: Some Kind of Monster'], because I don't want to think of them like that. I wanna think of fucking 'Battery' and 'Damage Inc.' and 'Ride the Lightning'. I don't wanna see these fragile fucking old men that can't have a cocktail anymore because they're afraid of what they'll become. Fuck that!"

I don't know, that's a pretty narrow-minded view. Like it or not, Metallica had the balls to expose their lives and problems to the world and that's a lot more than anybody else would do. Going through what they did wouldn't have been easy as it is, let alone with camera crews staring you in the face ready to show it to the world. Metallica certainly aren't what they used to be, and I think that is very unfortunate, but bashing them for Some Kind of Monster is a cop out. And whining because James doesn't want to drink is childish, considering he is a recovering alcoholic. Maybe he doesn't like being a drunk. I don't see King bashing Alice Cooper about it.

I think the point Kerry was trying to make is that Metallica just shouldn't have done the documentary. He wasn't exactly putting them down for not drinking or anything. It's just not the type of thing people want to see from Metallica and in the end seems to be just another way to bring in more money for the band.

Kerry King and Marilyn Manson must have got an email saying all P.R. for the upcoming tour must consist of the two of them b****ing about as much as humanly possible.

Hmm as much as i like Slayer it does seem that all of a sudden he has got very very vocal, just like manson.
and they both have an uncomming tour. ticket sales must be low or something.

lol, King is subtle in the same way a million screaming babies are subtle. That was about as subtle as you'll hear him get.

Personally, I kind of agree - I don't want to listen to Dyers' Eve and have these images of old crying men in therapy going through my head, you know? I want my rock to ROCK! hahah

Now Playing: as much Judas Priest as I can possibly handle, hahah

meh, I realise that kerry King is always yelling about something, but doesnt he ever pause for breath?
still coincidental that both bands on this odd tour are moaning about stuff at exactly the ame time.
i still maintain that ticket sales must be low.

As for this whole metallica thing, I'm counting on the new album. I agree with King in some ways saying that Metallica just isn't METALLICA anymore. It's a whole soap opera. But I still love 'em. Love slayer too.

My name tells you what I think of Slayer, but I've listened to Christ illusion all of 10 times which is about 5 more than St. Anger, so the album argument is a little hollow. Still, having seen both Metallica and Slayer within the past 4 years, Slayer would absolutely mop the floor with Metallica. Slayer continues to just destroy crowds while Met has to take a break every 3 songs while someone plays a bass or guitar solo. I would put a live Slayer against almost any other band going today and the old men would STILL show the young 'uns how it's done. Metallica on the other had are playing with Rolling Stones and Korn, not too much competition there.

I will laugh when Kerry King dies after becoming an old alcoholic man who is insane, but incapable to see anyone about it, and his music slowly fading and no more fans liking him anymore. Claiming "oh man, he was the greatest, but now he sucks" and then watching his sorry a$$ wrinkle and his tatoos distorting with his skin.

Even if somehow in some other dimension Kerry King was right about metallica, i still liked St. Anger, and wouldnt care. People should just stop listening to this man's opinions, and just listen to his guitar.

I'll try to never laugh at somebody's death slug, but I think that Kerry souldn't try to give lessons about everything and everybody, because after all, he is just a great guitar player and is not doing anything to help humanity get better. Just play and shut up !!!

I dont think Some Kind of Monster was made for publicity (because i dont think metallica needs it), and i dont think they showed the therapist because they were trying to be like a reality tv show or something stupid like that, they were showing why and how St. Anger came about. They made it so people can see what happened and what the lyrics are about, why it sounds like it does, and how they got a new bassist, its showing it wasnt just old men making a CD it was them struggling and making something to get rid of all the anger for all of the things they had to get angry at, showed in the movie.

By the way James Hetfield is only a year older than Kerry King, Robert Trujillo is the same age (and is anything but fragile, being one of the more talented bassists in finger picking in metal), Kirk hammet is a year older than James (but what gives him the right to ever make fun of Kirk, other than of his high voice, lol), and Lars is the same age as Kerry. If they are old men.... which they arent, then kerry king would be too. Unlike him they, are fathers and people who are more looked up apon... so should they keep drinking of course not, and uhmmmm more drinking would just make them more fragile so what there is a paradox in that as well.

f*** kerry king as if their b**** asses havent sold out by doing a tour with goth queen Marilyn Manson, f***ing hypocrites. And who gives a sh** about writs strenght, Trujillo would beat the sh** out Kerry Kings midget a$$ lame tribal tats all over his body, f***ing poser with tribal tats, thats f***ing lame. Slayer is still sick i love Tom Arya, but King needs to stick to talking about bashing religion and politics instead of talking sh** about a band that helped them make $$$$$$$$$, and paved the way for them.

Now Playing: Britney Spears: f*** Me xxxbodomofmynutsxxx one more time!
