Led Zeppelin Reuniting For One-Off Show, Possible Tour To Follow

Band Photo: Led Zeppelin (?)

Rock legends Led Zeppelin will reportedly reunite for a one-off memorial concert in honor of their late record boss.

If true, it would mark the third time that the '70s legends have played since disbanding. The band has only performed a handful of concerts, including Live Aid in 1985, since their split in 1980 following the death of drummer John Bonham. But singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will re-group alongside Bonham's son Jason for a special concert in memory of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun in London.

A source says, "Page, Plant and Jones spoke and agreed to do the memorial concert. They are waiting for a definite date."

"And no one can quite believe it, but during discussions about the concert they all gave the green light to a tour if it all does well and they don't all fall out."

"It has been hoped for and denied for years. But this is the closest they have ever come to a reunion tour. The feeling is that this is going to happen next year."

Ertegun died in December after seven weeks in a coma following a fall at a Rolling Stones concert. The likes of Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Stevie Nicks, and Crosby, Stills & Nash all played his New York memorial in April of this year.

Funny... I spent all day listening to Zep with my dad (a teenager during Zep's rise) while installing my car stereo, rotating tires etc....I never forgot how great the band were but it's been so long since I really listened.

When I was playing them as a kid, the music was all sewn together. All the instruments may as well have been one. I didn't understand which band members were creating which rhythms and melodies, no concept of struture, notes etc. I didn't care either....

It was just cool to hear it again with a greater understanding.

Led Zep are brilliant, been a fan since I can remember - well I can't really remember when, actually, it's been so long. This is great news, except for people in countries other than the US, hahah - what are the odds they DON'T visit Aus if they do go on tour? I'd say tremendous.

Led Zep and Black Sabbath are both metal kings in my opinion - Led Zep for it's jazz influence, and Sabbath for it's blues... but LZ are definitely more hard rock really than metal.

Sabbath and Zep are generally considered the two founders of metal, taking different paths that both contributed to the sound of metal. Sure they sound more hard rock by today's standards (Zep more than Sabbath), but Zeppelin had some heavy songs in addition to the acoustic stuff.

As Deathbringer says, Led Zeppelin CANNOT be considered 'metal' by todays standards - but you've got to remember that music wasn't as extreme in their days as it is now. In LZ's day, they were pretty heavy stuff, man. They were around in my dad's youth, and my grandpa listens to classical music, so... point made? LZ are metal, just by different standards to todays'. Same goes for early Sabbath, though it's less obvious because they kinda do sound more metal than Zeppelin, hahah.

just because zeppelin was one of the heaviest bands in their day doesnt make them the metal equivelent. metal didnt exist then. zeppelin was a key influence, but definately NOT metal. that's like saying elvis is metal because he was one of the most extreme acts in his day. early priest was pure hard rock, but unlike zeppelin, they developed and evolved into a metal band.

Indeed Led Zeppelin is hard rock and one of the first to create such a "heavy" sound...and somebody above said that they had a jazz influence and Sabbath was blues...that's pretty far off...Zeppelin's influence was SOLELY blues and they took many other genres, such as reggae in "The Crunge" and Doo-wop in the end of "The Ocean"...but these guys created such a heavy sound from a large blues base...It would be excellent to see them tour again..but as most have said..this has been rumored for a decade or more now..we'll see how accurate these rumors are...you gotta love these guys though..Robert Plant's high-flying vocals...Jimmy Page's wailing guitar solos and riffs...John Bonham's power drumming and "fast foot"...John Paul Jones holding the rhythm down with Bonham masterfully...

49. Kyle writes:

I think this whole thing about whether Zep is "metal" or "hard rock" is a big misunderstanding of the definition of "metal"...back in Zep's day, metal was indeed what you heard from LZ and Sabbath and Judas Priest..however, over time new bands pushed the limit of just how fast they can play and how loud...so now people always associate metal with the head-banging gigs that it contains now...but originally metal was not about pushing those limits..it was about the "heavier" and "deeper" sounds to the music...pushing the limits of power..not speed or noise...and if you see some of Zep's live stuff..for example, "How Many More Times" on the DVD..it shows how they even pushed the limits of their recorded versions to a heavier sound..hence they are considered one of the formers of metal...I hope that clears things up a bit for some...
:)
By the way, watching Song Remains The Same right now...not the greatest live stuff they did, but excellent nonetheless...

lol, NOTHING is based on one sole other thing - even mathematics has letters in it, hahah. Metal is inherently more blues-based in terms of its' scales, sound, tuning, you name it...

But where do you think we got our improvisation and virtuosity from? Both of those have always been huge strong points in jazz musicianship. Blues has always tended to stick to its' one structure - fortunately, many metal bands and genres mix there structure up a bit. It's a more subtle influence, I'll give you, but the influence is there. Don't discount it because it doesn't jump out at you.

Very true, psythe. +1

By the way, Plant just denied this show is happening to Guitar World.

Zep Reunion Denied

"File this one under “Communication Breakdown.”
Earlier this week, rumors of a Led Zeppelin one-off reunion show and possible 2008 tour circulated throughout the internet.
Yesterday, at a press conference in Greece for this weekend’s RockWave Festival, headliner Robert Plant denied the rumors and said he hadn’t heard anything about a Zep reunion.
When asked about the one-off show, Plant joked, “I don’t know if there would be enough doctors to support it.”
Previously, sources close to the Zeppelin camp had said that members Jimmy Page, Plant and John Paul Jones were planning to reunite for a memorial concert in London for Ahmet Ertegun, the Atlantic Records founder who died in 2006, and that if all went well, a full Zeppelin tour (with Jason Bonham on drums) would commence next year.
The RockWave Festival is happening June 29 and July 1 and 3, and will feature such artists as Plant, Metallica, Chris Cornell, Europe, Mastodon, My Dying Bride, Heaven and heck, Dream Theater, Iced Earth and others. For more information, visit rockwavefestival.gr. "

In my mind.....they are...well, how can I put it....they are indeed, Godlike....!!!!

As I said before, I think they are definatly in a category all by themselves...they are Led Zeppelin... not metal...or hard rock... the vast differences in some of their music keeps them from being put into any particular genre... take songs like Battle of Evermore or basically anything off of III
( excluding the Immigrant Song ) and compare it to,...most of Physical Graffitti or tracks like Achillies Last Stand and Nobody's Fault but Mine, from the Presence album... I think, that right there, is what made them so uniquie at the time, and still to this day...!!!
Yes, a tour would be most excellent...but honestly, I think I would have better luck playing "pick-up sticks" with my A$$ cheeks, then I would seeing a Zeppelin reunion tour... not like the unledded shows..( those were cool..I seen a couple..!! ) but....a real tour with the mighty Jason Bonham on drums... this, I just dont see happenin..
