Vinnie Paul Abbott Says Hellyeah "Really Felt Like The Right Thing To Do"

Launch Radio Networks reports: HELLYEAH releases its self-titled debut disc on Tuesday (April 10), featuring a new all-star collaboration between members of PANTERA, MUDVAYNE and NOTHINGFACE. PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul was initially hesitant about joining the new project, but told Launch that NOTHINGFACE bassist Jerry Montano helped push him over the edge. "He just kept insisting, you know," he said. "He just called me seven or eight times. He's like, 'Dude, you gotta do this, you gotta be the drummer, man,'and finally one night he caught me when I'd been drinking and listening to some kick-ass music, and it just dawned on me. I just said, 'You know what? Let's give this thing a shot, you know.'And the next day I got on the phone with all the guys, and I just loved everybody's attitude. Everybody was so gung-ho about doing this thing, nobody had any ego, and it just really felt like the right thing to do. So that's why I decided to become part of it."
HELLYEAH is the first group Paul has played in since DAMAGEPLAN, the band he formed with his brother and guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott after the breakup of PANTERA. "Dimebag" was shot and killed by a disturbed gunman during a DAMAGEPLAN show in December of 2004.
In addition to Paul and Montano, HELLYEAH features NOTHINGFACE guitarist Tom Maxwell, MUDVAYNE guitarist Greg Tribbett and MUDVAYNE singer Chad Gray.
Chad Gray told Launch why he wanted to put it together in the first place. "I don't know, I think I always wanted another outlet besides MUDVAYNE," he said. "MUDVAYNE's pretty intricate, it's pretty technical, and there's, like, a lot of themes, and I just wanted to do a band that was all screaming and yelling and basically no singing — a band that I could really have fun on tour with. So I was just thinking, 'You know, we should just be insanely extreme and come out and just crush everything and have fun.'"
An exclusive version of HELLYEAH's album, featuring a bonus acoustic demo version of the song "Alcohaulin' Ass", is available at Best Buy.

well chad grey actually doesnt like huge huge groups of ppl...and he doesnt like the camera and being famous, as seen in the mudvayne DVD so for him to be in another band and to go on such a gigantic tour is a bit strange in my mind....i think mudvayne in general is better but the album is still kick ass...well i guess this is a way of getting over that sort of thing...but ya keep it metal...cheers
I bought the album the other day and I got to say it is really good. It was a big relief that the album didn't fall flat like so-called "supergroups" often do as I am a big fan of Pantera, Mudvayne and Nothingface. I hope these guys come to Wisconsin if they do tour. Could they be the TBA band on the mainstage of Ozzfest? That would definitely be pretty frickin cool if it were to be so (although it is probably going to be BLS which wouldn't be terrible).
What bands do you like BodomBastard i want know you seem to like to disrepect every article about every band, wtf man. My hat goes off to Vinnie Abbott to continue to pursue music even after his brother was gunned down in front of him last time he played a show, Vinnie has more money then he would spend in a lifetime he could live on never picking up a drum sticks again and marveled at a tremendous legacy, even though i have never been into a lot of pantera i repect and support what him and his family have done for this industry. However i am a fan of chad grey and mudvayne and wtf don't you like about them, maybe youve never heard them or you like country music, maybe you made that connection with that little brain of yours when you saw them wearing Cowboy Hats on the Cover. ass.
