Trent Reznor Finds Creativity In Sobriety
Band Photo: Nine Inch Nails (?)
After struggling for years with addiction, Trent Reznor got clean and sober a few years back and released 2005's 'With Teeth'. While Nine Inch Nails fans are used to waiting almost five years between full albums from the band, here comes 'Year Zero' just about two years later. Reznor recently spoke to Gigwise about his current state of mind:
"I can see now with pretty much crystal clear clarity that that aspect had governed my life. I had made writing out to be a terrifying prospect filled with pain and failure and some things that I dreaded doing because I’ve always lacked self-confidence and every other thing," he said, while on tour in Europe. "By the end of my run with drugs I’d also realized that my brain wasn’t functioning right and I’d lost the power to really concentrate – it really made my art suffer, which made me feel worse, which made me want to get high and you know, that cycle starts up."

Not every album is going to sound the same.....get used to it...i love mudvayne and when Lost and Found came out, I was p***ed at first, it was a far cry from LD 50...but you have to learn to try and appreciate what they create, otherwise you are just close minded and ARE NOT a true music fan (that's NOT to say you have to like it)....by the way, I dont think Year Zero is that bad, I kind of like it, you cant be depressed all the time...
With Teeth was really good once you took it for what it was, which was quick, poignant observations in waking up from a drug haze and realizing life and time has started passing you by. It wasn't as epic as the fragile, or as f***ed up as The Downward spiral, but i liked what it was and look forward to the new album. From what i have heard of it, about 5 tracks, he is a little more scattered and delusional a la the spiral days, but not to say that it sounds the same, it just seems like it is going to appeal to those fans the most so far.
