Metallica Entering The Studio, Update on Fan Death Trial

Launch Radio Networks reports: METALLICA is tentatively scheduled to enter the studio this month and begin recording the follow-up to 2003's "St. Anger". Although the band spent most of 2006 writing the new record and will spend a good part of early 2007 laying it down, drummer Lars Ulrich told Launch that he doesn't feel the process is taking any longer than usual. "I don't think it's taking a particularly longer time than it has, it's just that the work is spread out," he said. "The days of 16-hour studio days and six days a week, that's not really happening. We sort of come down here at, you know, nine in the morning and then we sit and work 'til we have to go pick the kids up, or 'til somebody has to go to the dentist or something, you know (laughs)."

Ulrich recently told Launch that METALLICA has written about 25 songs for its ninth studio effort and will trim that down to one album's worth of material.

Referring to the controversial, low-fi production on 2003's "St. Anger", Ulrich said that he's "taken the drums out of the cardboard boxes" this time, and that lead guitarist Kirk Hammett will have guitar solos on this record.

The new disc will be produced by Rick Rubin and is expected out by late 2007.

Ulrich and actress Connie Nielsen are expecting their first child together after dating for two years. The baby is due early next summer.

And this from the Edmonton Sun:

"A clash over heavy-metal band Metallica sparked a fatal fight aboard a city bus last March, two teenage witnesses testified in court yesterday. A preliminary hearing is underway to determine whether four teen boys should go to trial for manslaughter in the March 2 bus beating death of Stefan Conley, 35. Three of the accused were 17 and one was 16 at the time. Yesterday, a 16-year-old boy who saw the fight told court it began as four boys were sitting in the back of the bus talking about heavy metal bands - Metallica in particular. One of the boys was wearing a Metallica tuque and had a Metallica tattoo on his shoulder, the witness said.

Then Conley, also sitting in the back of the bus, butted into the discussion with his two cents about Metallica, and a dispute ensued between the four boys and Conley that got increasingly heated. The witness said Conley told them, "You guys don't know metal. Metallica is nothing." In response, the witness said, one of the boys undid his belt buckle and the top button of his pants, as if to invite Conley to perform oral sex on him. That made Conley angry, said the witness. The witness said Conley stood up from his seat, went over to the boy and grabbed him by the jacket at his chest. The other boys started yelling at Conley, "Get off him! Get off him!" and three of them proceeded to punch Conley in the face, the witness said. The punches were "hard punches - giving it all they got." The witness figured Conley was punched between five and 10 times in the face. They punched Conley until he let go of the boy's jacket, said the witness. Conley, whose glasses had fallen off, appeared "dazed" and had blood coming from his mouth. He was wobbling and his eyes were looking upward, said the witness. Then, as the four boys were getting off the bus, one of them gave Conley one last push with both hands against his chest, said the witness. Conley took a backward freefall, bashing the back of his head against a bus seat and sliding between two seats, said the witness.

The witness couldn't say which boy gave the final shove. But a second witness yesterday, a 16-year-old girl who was also at the back of the bus, pointed out the boy seated in the courtroom who she said gave the final push. Her account of the argument and fight was almost the same as that of the first witness. She said as an angry Conley grabbed the boy, he said, "I got four punk kids on me."

She also said that as the fight ended, it looked like Conley was trying to "catch his balance" before he was pushed. Both witnesses said they were shocked to hear that Conley had died from the beating. And both said they never saw anyone kick Conley or stomp on him. Conley was later pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. The names of youth witnesses can't be printed.

Four teens were walking away from a fight with Stefan Conley on a city bus when Conley reached for one of them and was shoved to the floor, a teen witness told court today. The girl testified today at a preliminary hearing to determine whether four teen boys will stand trial on manslaughter charges in the March 2 slaying of Conley, 35. Three of the accused were 17 and one was 16 at the time. The witness, whose name can’t be printed because she’s a youth, said she was at the back of the bus along with Conley and four boys as the bus headed west from Mill Woods. A dispute broke out between Conley and the four boys about the heavy metal band Metallica and got increasingly heated, the girl said. Two other teen witnesses have also testified the fight began with a dispute over Metallica.

One of the boys, who the girl called “Metallica guy” in a statement to cops, had a Metallica tattoo on his arm, she said. “The victim was saying he went to one of (Metallica’s) concerts and he was more of a fan (than the teens) because he was there when they were around, and now they donÂ’t tour.” All of a sudden, Conley got angry, went over to one of the seated teens and punched him, said the girl. Her version conflicted with those of two previous teen witnesses, who testified Conley grabbed the teen by the collar area of his jacket but threw no punches. One of the boy’s friends tried to pull Conley off the teen and all of the boys then started punching Conley, she said. Then they stopped punching and went to get off the bus. Conley, who was bleeding heavily from the mouth and looked “out of it,” reached out for the last of the boys to grab or hit him and the boy pushed him away, said the witness. Conley toppled backwards to the floor, bashing the back of his head head on a seat. His head bounced once, and then he fell back to the floor and didnÂ’t move again, she said. The girl, her friend and two boys got off the bus and walked to South Edmonton Common. The girl said the four boys involved in the fight walked away across a field. Conley was later pronounced dead on arrival in hospital. The girl’s evidence about the final push conflicted with that of her 16-year-old friend, who on Tuesday testified that Conley appeared to be blindly grabbing for a pole to catch his balance when the boy shoved him backwards. Court has heard Conley’s blood alcohol level when he died was .164 – more than twice the legal driving limit of .08. Today, the four accused teens’ defence team plans to call a witness to testify about Conley’s alleged propensity for violence. Defence lawyer Ed OÂ’Neill said court will hear of an incident that happened one week before March 2.

I hate to see people die over stuff that could be easily avoided...that guy was insanely drunk the night of the beating so there is reason as to why he reacted that way...the teens really f***ed him up though man.

The article states that they were on a city bus. Generally, city buses have rounded metal poles on the back of the seats for standing passengers to hold. I assume that is why the push was fatal.

I wouldnt hold my breath about the new album sounding like master of puppets. Afterall, they claimed that "st anger" was going to be a return to the master of puppets style and look how that turned out. But no matter what it sounds like, I think its safe to say it will be much better than st anger.

All of this was very unfortunate. As we can read above....YOUNGER HIP HOP RAISED TEENS COULD NEVER RELATE TO SOMETHING SO BEFORE THERE TIME. No real fan of the band, Metallica..NOT THE PERSONA, but the band would not call themselves "Gaytallica"!!
The older passenger must have forgotten how absolutely stupid teenagers are nowadays!! They really are because when you don't have any respect for anyone. Your compassion for others is little if any. Inviting a grown man to give you head on a bus is HOW OUTRAGIOUS SOME TEENS ARE THESE DAYS! TO THERE DUMD ASSES IT WAS A BOLD a$$ FUNNY JOKE. IT'S ALL A LAUGH UNTIL YOUR a$$ IS ON THE LINE.......LET'S SEE WHO LAUGHS LAST!!
SINCE THIS ALL SPARKED FROM A CHAT ABOUT METALLICA......YOU YOUNGER HIP HOP RAISED KIDZ ARE TOO YOUNG TO REALLY TRUELY UNDERSTAND WHATS UP! NOT EVEN OLD RECORDINGS AND MAGAZINES CAN TAKE YOUR MIND BACK TO A BANDS GLORY DAYS. FOR ME..I remember being 16 sitting in my room......it's Febuary '89. On the radio was an old metal station called Zrock! Whats are they playing....METALLICA LIVE FROM MY LOCAL ARENA...THE ENTIRE SHOW!! BROADCAST WHEREVER Z ROCK WAS PLAYED. I USE THIS AS AN EXAMPLE TO SAY.....IF YOU WEREN'T THERE WHY SHOULD YOU CARE, BUT NOTHING CAN JUSTIFY KILLING A MAN BECAUSE HE HAD AN OPINION YOU DIDNT WANT TO RESPECT. ON THIS NIGHT....I GOT THE CHILLS AS KIRK LARS AND JASON PLAY "LIITTLE WING" FROM JIMI HENDIX DURING KIRKS SOLO SPOT!! THIS IS WHAT US OLD REAL METALLICA FANS KNOW ABOUT THAT YOU DONT. IT'S SO MUCH BETTER WHEN YOU GOT IT FIRSTHAND! NOT FROM THE APPLE I TUNES STORE, BUT WHEN IT WENT DOWN! There is no comparison. If you're a younger fan of any OLDER metal band, give us older guys our respect. Because, we've seen and heard so much better than whats out here today...Now don't forget to watch my sweet 16 on Mtv........and please record that hot new PANIC AT THE DISCO VIDEO!! METALLICA SURELY CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO THAT!.....It's sarcasm to see if you get it!

Kids are dumb-that's part of being young. It has nothing to do with Hip Hop-Mustaine himself (when he was in Metallica) was legendary for beating people senseless.

I want to say this is tragic... it just seems so odd that people would get into a FIGHT on a bus over Metallica?!?? As a trained Martial Artist I can't see myself coming to blows over any band (and I like hurting people). Its sad, but its just sooo dumb...

Well the old dude got beaten to death so I'm guessing it won't be him haha. Dude not all teenagers are stupid, and not all teenagers who grew up in the hip hop age were influenced by it. Me and my friends have been going to local metal gigs since we were kids, and I don't mean sh** nu-metal gigs.

Anything like st anger and they will have lost me for good, although saying that, i cant listening to any 'tallica song without remembering how much of their set got cut at donnington. Or how much better their stuff sounded with Dave Lombardo and Joey Joridson pounding the skins. That almost made up for the hour cut from the set.... almost.

Cynic, why are trying to make sense of non sense?? being HIp Hop influenced doesn't make you a killer....My point was Hip Hop has been running the pop culture portion of the music industry for a long time now! When a rapper can sample a great metal tune like, "crazy train" get permission from Ozzy n Sharon to do it, and make a new tune out of it....It's just another nail in the coffin for what was once a standard. Metal has already seen it's best day's. My comparison dealt with the notion most younger teen's can't relate to what a band like Metallica really meant to metal 10 to 15 years ago. I never said all youngsters are bad. Todays teenager doesn't get what we got. So asking strangers for blow jobs on busses is where were at nowadays. The real problem is when people like you wanna cheer them on. They don't need no cheerleader. They usually just cheer for each other until.....someones a$$ is on the line!! Now, it's"I'm just a kid. Go on, show me where I voiced any support for these kids, who for all you know defended themselves against a drunken assault. Saying "So asking strangers for blow jobs on busses is where were at nowadays." has no more weight than me saying "so So drunken adults punishing immature kids with violence is where were at nowadays."

I quote "YOU YOUNGER HIP HOP RAISED KIDZ ARE TOO YOUNG TO REALLY TRUELY UNDERSTAND WHATS UP!" seemed like a big generalisation, and it seemed like you were aiming it at all youth. (I mean, this is hardly the hang out of hip hop kids is it?)

I definately agree with you that Metallica meant more to the 80s scene than probably any metal band might...well ever, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't mean the music doesn't mean more to your generation than it does to ours. Metallica is what got me into metal, hell, Metallica is probably the most important influence of my life.

In my opinion, Ride the lightening is there best album (sorry) even though i'm admitting their best song is Master Of Puppets. From reading the above story and what others have wrote, i do have a lot of respect for older metallica fans, i have respect for all bands music, its not an easy job to create albums as shown in metallicas Some Kinda Monster DVD. I this Conley fella may have been over twice the legal driving limit, but could he handle it? He got of his feet quick enough and grabbed this imbassile, we all know twice the legal driving limit is buggar all. He should have given these little idots a wide birth and not argued with them about metallica, these are 3 kids 1 or 2 years older than me who are complete wastes of space, i mean opening your zip up to imply a blow job, i would never dream of doing that to anyone stranger or not!!!!! these kids are obviously trouble. if i was sitting on that back seat i'd have moved closer to the front as soon as they sat down close to me. BUT.......im not saying it was his fault..............he didnt expect it to happen........he didnt porposly get on the bus for a argument and a fight. I think these 3 dumb a$$ kids should be locked up for good, throw away the key. I mean, what else have they been up to, or could get up to. it frustrates me to think all that happened on such a simple topic.

Anyway, i hope Rick Rubin kick their asses into shape for this new album, they need to get influenced off their own older work.

On the course of this subject however, I have gotten into fights before over bands. It's not particularly big or clever. Metallica have put their fans old or new through alot over the years, the "sell out" regarding never cutting hair/wearing eye liner ect to the Napster farce to st anger ect... Like i said in my previous post, i'll listen to a few songs before making my mind up, although i already have preconcieved ideas of this being crap.

I can see why alot of people wouldn't bother with Metallica after the Black Album but personally, I quite like Load for musical quality. I'll agree that wearing eye liner was a sh** move but defend them cutting their hair as I reckon they look a bit better but again I'd understand why that would piss some fans off. I don't think there was as big an uproar as when Igor Cavalera cut his hair was there? And once more I can see why people would get angry with the Napster situation but I'll defend them to the death on that because at the end of the day, people were basically taking their music without permission. If I was a member of Metallica I'd be pretty p***ed off too. I know some bands like Maiden and Stuck Mojo don't mind people downloading their songs but at the end of the day, it's Metallicas music.

you know, Metallica seems a pretty boring subject now.

Yeah it does lol. Yeah I know what you mean, I would consider myself a British Nationalist but I wouldn't say I'm a racist. When you get songs like "When The Boat Came In" I think thats a little much but then Skrewdriver have songs like "Free My Land" and "Voice Of Britain" that gives me a great sense of pride in being British. I used to be a Commie but decided it was a load of sh** when I went to college as you had all these other Commies there that were so up there own arse it's unbelievable. That and Communism doesn't work. I have alot of friends that hate the whole RAC music but none of these people actually have musical experience or anything so I'm like "You write something like that then!" As you said, you don't have to agree with the lyrics, just enjoy the music!

i think/hope that this next album might be pretty good. these guys really need to redeem themselves in the eyes of their fans. i never thought badly of them but i could use some more good metallica. if bands like slayer, kreator and exodus, who are just as old as metallica, can still come out with albums that are as heavy and aggressive as their 80s counterparts, then why cant metallica?

Rubin can make bad musicians sound credible and helps talented artists achieve greatness.....It remains to be seen if Metallica are beyond his help or not.

AMEN BLACKDOG and RememberMetal? !

SLAYER STILL GOT IT! unlike Metallica, who lost their credibility after Black album.

I'd love to work with Rick Rubin. It would be awesome...
