"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Interview With Jesse Dean Of Narcotic Self

Omaha, Nebraska's NARCOTIC SELF is a heavy metal band with serious intentions. They are here to plant the 'true metal' flag right back into the soil that it's been robbed from thanks mainly in part to all the corporate tactics being used to push EMO pop rock acts as the real deal. The band has been touring heavy on their local scene and recently self-released the full-length effort 'Blood and Poison, which hits you square in the chest just like Pantera did back in the day. I am real proud to have gotten some Q&A in with their singer, Jesse Dean.

Rocket: Are you originally from Omaha, Nebraska?

Jesse: Yep. But I've been to a lot of other places.

Rocket: When did you first start singing?

Jesse: Man, I've been singing for as long as I can remember. I was really into music as a kid. I liked Elvis, Micheal Jackson, Styx, the Doors and all kinds of music back in the 80's growing up. Once I came across Faith no More, Megadeth and Metallica, I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

Rocket: Did you ever take any formal singing lessons?

Jesse: No. Not until recently have I started working on my vocal technique a lot. But it's paid off. I think I'm doing better than I ever have vocally. I blew my voice out 3 times doing our new record (BLOOD AND POISON). So I've been taking steps to really get my voice under control.

Rocket: So who are a few metal vocalists that have influenced you the most? Past or present.

Jesse: Mike Patton, Max Cavalera, Phil Anselmo, Devin Townsend, Rob Flynn, Burton C. Bell, Randy Blythe, Dax (from Acid Bath)....man I could go on forever with that!

Rocket: So briefly, how did Narcotic Self join together as a band?

Jesse: It's no short story, cause I've been workin on NARCOTIC SELF for a long time. Almost 10 yrs now. Which is crazy for me to think about. After the most incredible first show ever, we already needed a new drummer. Jeff Hennings took over, later we decided that we wanted another guitar player. Doug was the obvious choice since we were old friends and he used to be in a band with Jeff before Narcotic Self. Later the problems with our bass player became more and more out of control. So then we got Chirs to come in on bass. Once he had been in the band for like almost a year we all decided we need a new drummer. So then Doug came across Rick one night and from there we've got to where we are today. The funny thing is, is that we've all known each other for a long time now. Even before the band.

Rocket: How do you go about writing your lyrics? Obviously it's on some pretty intense subject matter and emotions. Do you lock yourself away alone with a bottle of booze and just let it rip?

Jesse: My lyrics are about about confusion, anger, addiction, and the world that I'm livin in. I'll write about almost anything, but it's usually about personal shit. I don't understand people at all. The way my head works is a total maze man. All my relationships and interactions with people in life I never understand. People are killing themselves off and know one is really saying or doing anything about it or really even seems to care. Meanwhile while I'm all pissed about the rest of the world around me I'll wake up and realize I'm on a self destuctive rampage myself and not even know it!! I'm Just trying to figure myself out and you can see frustasion comeing right into the lyrics. That's what usually lands on the paper. I do lock myself away in the dark to write. Sometimes with a clear mind, and sometimes not.

Rocket: Right on. I know with all the latest big name albums that have dropped, there's quite a competition now going for best metal album of 2006. What's been your favorite so far?

Jesse: Strapping Young Lad... hands down.

Rocket: That is some pretty heavy shit big D is breaking off with those guys. No doubts. Who are some of the other local Nebraska metal acts that impress you?

Jesse: DirtFedd are good friends of ours, we all like there stuff alot, BloodCow, Paria, Cellador is doing really good, DownShift, School of Arms, DeadEchoes, There's alot of great music happening around here right now. Epecially in metal.

Rocket: Tell me, do you actually take time out to answer all your fan mail on MySpace?

Jesse: I try. If I'm at home with the time, I junp on and go through the messages and reply to people. I try to keep up with MySpace.

Rocket: What's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you on stage?

Jesse: Well, I don't think I can say this really happend to me but we played a show with the Genitortures awhile ago. As I'm looking out into the Crowd during the set, way in the back I see these two people having sex! Right next to them this lucky guy was getting a blow job from this chick. So once the song was over I stopped and told the crowd to turn and checkout the action happeing in the back, it was pretty funny.

Rocket: Damn, sounds metal to me! Ha! Tell me, brother man, what are a few upcoming shows for the band?

Jesse: Just touring all around. Doing shows in the Midwest. Maybe hittin the coast if it possible. Shows are always awsome though. Denver, Des Moines, Omaha, and Lincoln are always super cool crowds for us. Maybe we'll do some dates on the Jagermeister Music Tour.

Rocket: Give a shout out to your biggest supporters.

Jesse: Jagermeister, Big Q Productions, 1% Productions, DreamWeaver Entertainment, All the Bands that help us out, The Fans, The Metal Den, 89.7 The River's " Sunday School, anyone whos ever supported us, the list goes on forever.
