Metallica Guitarist Jams With Tool In Hawaii

METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett reportedly joined TOOL onstage during their headlining appearance at the Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday (August 18). According to one TOOL fan's eyewitness account posted at the ToolNavy.com web site, TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan introduced Hammett by saying, "We have a special guest tonight. He's not [unintelligible], and he's not Elvis. Well, maybe he's their bastard son, Mr. Kirk Hammett." "[Kirk] then proceeded to come out and play guitar on 'Sober'. I've never been partial to METALLICA, and for those of you who are, I'm sorry to report that Kirk damn near butchered the song. His drunken so-called 'solo' was particularly sloppy and completely extraneous. Only the band coming back through to thrash the rest of the song out extremely hard saved it. Then he totally tripped out and flustered Adam [Jones, TOOL guitarist] by grabbing him for his 'hug' and kissing him on the mouth! Only to return at the end of the show to the stage to perform the 'we're not worthy!' bow on his knees before the guys. At least he realizes."

Funny. Sounds like a typical show. Nothing like a drunk special guest to remind us all how fun it is to be in band. I would like to think that Kirk didn't suck that night, but if he did...he did. Big deal. It's all in good fun. I can't tell you how many times I've seen my favorite Bands botch a song or be too drunk to pull it off. But we all had a good time. So as long as you can hold your booze, you got nothin to loose. But I wasn't there so it could all be bull-crap. Either way, I'm glad Kirk had fun. Maybe he got inspired to write something new for Metallica.
let's face the facts --
Kirk Hammett. Good, but not particularly idolised for musical genius...
Tool. Practically worshipped for their complex blend of metal and creativity...
No surprise to find the crowd wasn't overly impressed by a modern-day Metallica guitarist.
A good friend of mine who is a huge fan of Tool and only a moderate fan of Metallica told me after the show "that bastard boy of yours [hammet] did a pretty good rendition of Sober. So there you go if that helps balance the scales at all.
Of course I then asked 'what the hell was he doing there?" and he said "playing Tool's Sober, duh"
There is some irony to a drunken(?) Hammett playing Sober by Tool/with Tool....Hammett comes from a differnt musical reality, a differnt era in rock ethos...and a differnt school of playing. It's nice to know that both Hammett and Tool have a healthy respect for eachother even if their from differnt worlds.
I was at the Honolulu show and I can tell you that Hammet did not butcher Sober at all. Sure it was extraneous and unnecessary, but it was obvious that there were 5 musicians on stage having a fantastic time with themselves. All you had to do was sit back and here the sounds and the power to appreciate what you were witnessing without considering who was on stage doing what. Hammet was not drunk he just played a free-form sloppy solo that hit and miss. I was pleased with the experience and don't blame them for bringing him onstage. >Experiment< is the key word here.

Easy on the booze Kirk. That's pretty pathetic. You probably went from having the crowd and the band being appreciative of your presence, to them squirming in their seats at this "performance" of yours. Show some self-respect.
