Avenged Sevenfold Singer Gets Political

Steve Knopper of Newsday.com eports that AVENGED SEVENFOLD wants to warn liberals about something. The metal band's song "Blinded In Chains", which begins with the line "And we're at it again — I turn around another -- war, man," has absolutely nothing to do with the war in Iraq. Or any other war involving guns and bombs. "If I read it, I'd probably get that interpretation, too. I could probably have done a better job," says singer and lyricist M. Shadows, sheepishly. "I've definitely looked at that song and seen where people are coming from."

In fact, "Blinded In Chains" is about the philosophical war between Republicans and Democrats. The former are excessively closed-minded, says Shadows, 24, and the latter are "a bunch of -- idiots where everyone looks at Michael Moore and does what he says." If from that statement you can't glean the band's politics, consider that AVENGED SEVENFOLD sells American-flag T-shirts proclaiming, "Love It Or Die".

"Most people know we're kind of one of the only bands around right now that will admit that we're Republican," says Shadows, who performs at Saturday's Ozzfest on Randall's Island. "When we went on the [punk-rock] Warped Tour last year — all of those bands, they're not only anti-war, they're anti-everything our country stands for. We were like, ' -- this.' We're going to wear our America shirts.

"Kids would eat it up. They loved it," adds Shadows, born Matt Sanders. He acknowledges he's not especially pro-war. "Ninety percent of those bands are talking -- about [President] Bush to 16-year-old kids who can't vote and are just ranting because it's the cool thing to do. It's one of those things where we went out there and did the complete opposite."

Jesus, what does it matter if they're Republican? I don't like Avenged Sevenfold at all but I respect them for saying that when they're surrounded by jumped up little punk bands that slag off Bush without even knowing what he does most of the time. I like George Bush, he's entertaining. He's no Bill Clinton though lol.

I love them, their music is awesome!! I respect if they are republicans and defend Bush although I hate him. I'm their fan and I always will be their fan.
But sincerily I don't respect the people who defens war... if they defend war is because they don't live it, they see images in TV while they're sitting in the sofa... and they think they are more than people of different culture. This isn't ideals this is ignorance ¬¬
You can defend your country with words and acts but you can't do it with violence. It's easy to defend it when it happens far away but When someone enter in your home and kill all your family infront of your eyes I assure you that your point of view would change...
( And I'm not talking about Avenged, they are greatttttt!!!)

This is such a touchy subject because on one hand they have a right to be republican and voice their opinions how ever they want, but then on the other hand, music is generally meant to be interpreted by the listener. In telling me or anyone their political views, religious views, mainly just views of any kind, infuses a certain way of interpreting their music. That in turn takes away my creative freedom. And, though I support their individuallity, I can't support them politically because I simply can't imagine why any intelligent person whose first thought isn't money, or related to money, would support Bush. And to defend why politics matter...Each political affiliation has obtained a certain mind-set and ethical tendencies, therefore what you are politically defines what you most likely believe, which in turn defines how you probably act, which determines who you are in general. With that said, I don't like who republicans are.

well, Im an european who found about Avenged Sevenfold a few years ago. Honestly, and i think mustly of you know we kinda have a problem with the political and military american issues. It gets the whole world in danger. Its not just the "black gold". There are more things to consider in this century. War is diferent, more destructive. But there still men ready to battle for what they believe, for their future and for a country. This is not an issue of supporting this or that, bush or clinton, republicans or democrats. Its about a band, men and women, young and old, poor and rich have the right and the possibility to actually speak their mind. Punk-rock bands are not quiet open to this (unless u're speaking the same ideas as they are) and I think its an act of courage what Avenged Sevenfold and specially Shadows did. I respect them for that! and beside all that, their a breath of fresh air in a world filled with britney spears and black eyed peas. Nothing against them but..i just dont like them!
Thank you to Avenged Sevenfold and Shadows for the free speech and for the amazing music they put out!

Honestly, when I read this, I was a little shocked, they don't look like Republicans. That just proves that you can't put a face on a political party's members. However, on a political-consumer note, M. Shadows should watch what he says. That is his/their (A7X) fan base they are talking to.

I read this article in Newsday when it was first published. I don't know where M. Shadows gets his political information from, but it is heavily distorted. Simply because you bash Bush does not mean you are anti-American. That that is the type of garbage that comes flying out of Hannity and O'Reilly's mouth. If you base your politics on a musician or band, you should not open your mouth anyways. It shows that you cannot think for yourself, and you if you respect the President just because a band does, that is another indication that you cannot think for yourself.

I agree with M. Shadows in that these bands political bands are annoying and only about 6 bands have done political music correctly and they always have.

Bush is horrible and his policies are ill-defined and are executed poorly. The Bush Doctrine is crap. War is hell and it always will be. I may disagree but I will still buy their music. I am patriotic and I love this country. I hate Bush and I am willing to openly my mouth without fear of getting my a$$ kicked makes me more of an American (if you ask me).

The are War and Oil Profiteers and all of their actions follow that mantra. I have no problem with Musicians getting political-but know what the hell you're talking about-pro or against. M Shadows shouldn't go after other bands for their stance simply because he's no different than they are-uninformed.

You hear that, people? Don't try to get kids involved in poitics because they can't vote. Keep the youth in the dark about the world around them, they're happier that way. (Sarcasm at 9.5/10)

What is f***ing moron talking about? Even if you're purely lobbying one viewpoint when you talk politics, that's better than saying nothing at all and ignoring future generations of teenagers. And yes, I get it that he goes out on stage and republicates his "Love It or Die" nonsense, but what is this bullsh** about bands ranting "because it's the cool thing to do"? If these idiots in A7X watch mtv, they'll realize that the "cool thing to do" is to apparently buy A7X records and worship them like they were gods.

This moron needs to think before he speaks... and then shut his f***ing mouth.

It's such a shame that these talented guys could have their heads so far up their asses.

I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that this guy is a Bush supporter, especially when he describes Republicans as "..excessively closed-minded." And there are a lot of Republicans who don't support Bush (including myself). It just sounds like he's annoyed by people who hate America, which I feel him on. Love for your country knows no politcial bounds.

The notion that the amount of love, respect or loyalty you have for your country is determined by your politcal affiliation is something created by people who only wish to divide our nation.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Dude, I couldn't agree more. But I'd like to point out to everyone that the reason some people see it that way is because of Bush and his cronies, who used their power to divide this country when they should have been uniting it. They did this because eventhough Bush cares about this country, he cared just as much (if not more) about getting elected twice. And like you said, I point the finger of blame on Bush and company alone, NOT the entire Republican party. I, unlike Dubya, will not demonize an entire political party solely because of the actions of a few greedy morons who only see the world in terms of gaining money and power.
