Watch MTV.com's "Greatest Metal Bands - The Great Metal Debate" Online

MTV Overdrive has a feature on the debate that took place when MTV set out to come up with the top ten greatest metal bands list. Here's a summary of the process:

"We reached out to the most passionate and knowledgable metal fans working at MTV and asked them to send us their individual picks for the 10 greatest, with the only criteria being "whatever greatness means to you." Some feel that the influence a band had on others is the most important factor in judging greatness; others say the strength of the albums is the primary concern; and some believe the power of a band's live performance is the ultimate measure. We did not care what each participants criteria was; we only asked them to vote from their hearts."

"In part two, we gathered everyone together, showed them the results, and asked them to either stand by it, or change it as they saw fit, the only rule being that a majority had to vote in favor of every change. The discussion and debate over the rankings is what you see in the Overdrive show."

"In such debate lies much geekdom and fun, and MTV's metal brain trust — our panel of experts, consisting of nine die-hard, longtime fans — had a blast conjuring and debating this list."

The resulting list of the greatest metal bands follows, but be sure to check out the video because it was actually an interesting discussion.

1. Black Sabbath
2. Judas Priest
3. Metallica
4. Iron Maiden
5. Pantera
6. Slayer
7. AC/DC
8. Motorhead
9. Kiss
10. Motley Crue

As much as MTV represents corporate music and pop culture, I have to give them props for this video and the resulting list. I don't necessarily like all the bands on the list, but I think it was a well thought out process and I tend to agree with the results for the most part.

I think,it's my meaning so it's not intended to attack or bring negative comments about other groups, that Black Sabbath shouldn't be on nuber 1 'cause they are more hardrock than metal.Judas Priest on number 2 ? F*** yeah they are good. But i think thatSlayer should be either on nr 1 or 3 .

Wow. I knew the Megadeth fans would be speaking up, but not the first comment after mine :-) There are lots of good, classic heavy metal bands from the late 80s and early nineties era that I loved as well, but they just aren't top 10 material. Bands like Megadeth, Testament, and Sepultura were all the powerhouses of that era along with Metallica, but none of them had the impact and influence of Metallica, or the rest of the bands on that list.

The panel even questioned whether AC/DC was metal. I don't think there's any question about AC/DC, Priest, Sabbath, Crue or Kiss. They aren't as HEAVY by today's standards, but they were certainly metal and paved the way for much to come.

If it were a top 20, no doubt more of these bands as well as bands representative of modern genres would come into play.

Yeah, the Zeppelin thing is interesting. I think it was a VH1 show or MTV Overdrive thing I was watching about the roots of metal and they had it basically split down two lines - coming from Sabbath and Zeppelin. But if any band straddles the line of hard rock(classic rock) and metal, it's Led Zeppelin. I'd probably stick them in that list though and bump Crue.

AC/DC are absolutely awesome, but not really metal. But their sheer power and influence can let us overlook their inclusion. KISS was a gimmick that knew merchandising. Their influence is on the live show and licensing, which while important to the economics of a working band do not merit inclusion on this list. And Crue, well they just don't have the chops to justify keeping any of the following off the list: Megadeth, Sepultura, Tool, Anthrax, Korn, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Slipknot, System of a Down, Ozzy, Suicidal Tendencies. The possible reaches that would have also been acceptable as replacements for the Crue; Guns N Roses, Zeppelin, Van Halen, Down (just not enough albums), White/Rob Zombie, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains (the last two are penalized for not waving the metal banner). Of all the new up and coming bands the only that I think has the talent to one day warrant consideration is Mastodon. What do other people think? Only pick bands that are exclusively post-Y2K in their output.

For those who don't think that Sabbath or some other mentioned bands meet your definition of heavy metal - the term was coined before I was even born, and applied to bands in the late 60s and early 70s, so there is no saying "Sabbath is not metal". It might not fit YOUR personal definition, but they are clearly the founders of metal and the first to earn that label and give it meaning. As much as I like thrash/speed/death/black metal, I don't think everyone has to be super-fast, super-heavy or extreme to be metal. It's simply not the case because heavy metal was defined before most of us were even listening to it.

I agree that zeppelin should definantly b up there, somewhere in the top 3 at least. Although many probably dont consider them metal, back in the day, the music they made was considered pretty heavy and dark even though they also had a lot of slower bluesier stuff. They were kind of the bridge between the psychedelic stuff of the 60s to Sabbath who ARE metal and anybody who thinks they aren't needs to get their f*ckin head checked. Sabbath pretty much created and defined metal. THE original. Every thing else is about right except 4 motley crue and kiss. yes, motley were a big metal band during the 80s big hair scene, theyre just simply not that great to b in the top ten. Kiss were a good hard rock band but were more of a gimmick and r more about being entrepenuers than than just making music which is really not wut metal is about. replace them w/ g'n'r

I believe this list is very accurate, but, there are certain bands that I feel deserve to be up there that aren't. I fully agree that Black Sabbath should be the number one band, for the mere fact that they are the original metal band. They started metal in my opinion. And I also agree that Judas Priest should be number two. Judas Priest was the first band to release a completely metal album, they are truly hardcore. One band that I feel deserves more credit though is Iron Maiden, they were truly an awesome band, that is after they picked up Bruce d***inson as lead singer. My list would go:

1. Black Sabbath
2. Iron Maiden
3. Judas Priest
4. Motorhead
5. Metallica
6. Children of Bodom
7. Dream Theater
8. AC/DC
9. Megadeth
10. Slayer
And, as I've read through some of the other comments, I've noticed others have put their opinions of a proper list up as well, and I believe that most are putting some very good bands, but the thing is, this is a "Metal" list. You have to include all forms of metal. Some have bands such as Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, and Anthrax towards the top, but the thing with those bands is, is that they're all Thrash/Speed metal. You have to also include some of the originating metal bands, such as Sabbath and Maiden. Some lists are directed more towards Death Metal, and I love Death Metal, but it's not the only type of metal. My list is based on the bands that I feel had the greatest impact on metal music. I labeled them by the extreme that they had an impact. I have Judas Priest towards the top, because, think about this. How many bands wear leather and chains? Judas Priest started that, that's a huge effect. Black Sabbath produced the first actual metal, they deserve the number one spot. And Iron Maiden, I feel they were the first band to go out on a limb with their style. They had an uncomparable image, due to the use of a mascot, Eddie, as most know him. That is my opinion.

the first 6 i put up because all of those bands influenced the metal bands of today. fear factory i put up there for two reasons, 1. because they were the first metal band where the singer switched vocals back and forth between singing and screaming.so many bands do that today, examples: slipknot, system of a down, just to name a few. two, they were the first modern metal band to use keyboard/synths. korn i put up there because in the late ninetys they started the whole nu metal movement where band after band was trying to copy them. almost all of the bands that tried to copy them are gone yet korn is still here and they still have a huge fan base. slipknot i put in there cause i feel they brought back brutality in heavy metal. i also feel they are one of the reasons why the nu metal era ended. just like what slayer did for metal in the late eighties for metal i feel slipknot did now with the speed and brutality and the heavyness. most of the bands that are coming out now, the ones that are really heavy are coming out cause of one of three bands, metallica, slayer and slipknot. hatebreed i put in there cause they brought hardcore to the mainstream. they are also responsible for a major chane as far as concerts goe, the hardcore pit where every one kicks and punches. i love hatebreed but i feel that is one of the down sides of them cause i hate hardcore pits. i like the old school slam dancing. now the only band i should have put up that i didnt is pantera. the problem is i dont know what number i would put them in. anyway that is my list. let me know what you think.

The idea of this list is pretty retarded, I mean, how subjective is 'greatest'?

If its about influence - Where the f*** is Venom? If it's about all metal (as deathbringer said, in some people's crazed mind AC/DC is metal), where is Death & Morbid Angel holding the death metal flag? Or Emperor and Darkthrone for black metal?

This list is a waste of time, another media pull by MTV. It's no different to the bullsh** guitar magazine's with their top 100 guitarist lists that sell so well to the stupid masses.

I think MTV didn't choose correctly those lists that Mtv made are not as great in the metal world. If MtV were the greatest place they should do those lists over. Black Sabbath , Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are the greatest metal bands in the world of Metal plus they are the most influintial and imitated in the world. Black Sabbath and Judas Priest Practically started metal. First of all AC/ Dc shouldn't be in the list, their a great Band (one of my favorites) but AC/DC practically not metal. Here is my list of the the ten top Metal bands.
1.Black Sabbath
2. Iron Maiden
3.Judas Priest
4. Metallica
5.Megadeth
6.Van Halen
7. Slayer
8.Ozzy Osbourne
9. Guns N Roses
10. Queensryche

Also I am a great fan of led-Zeppelin , but Led- Zeppelin is not metal though they were a key band to Start Metal, the same gos to Deep Purple one of the greatest bands but definitley not metal also Queen is one of my favorite bands but it is not metal. Also for those people that say Iron Maiden is not a god hear their music. Iron Maiden opened many doors to Metal bands such as Metallica (Metallica was influinced By the NWOBHM) Lars ulrich was a Fan of NWOBHM bands. NWOBHM was a key ingredient for thrash metal.
