Interview With Simon Of Lofat
Norfolk, Virginia's thrash specialists Lofat have been causing quite the havoc this year on tour and in the studio. They are set to release their debut full-length album on Brickhouse Records at the start of August, and I for one cannot wait to hear the damage they have done. I decided I wanted to get more of the fat, so I hit up their sexy as all hell and down from the get-up guitar player, Simon, with some new questions.
Rocket: It's been awhile since we last caught up to you, Simon. How are things going for Lofat? You guys are working hard on completing your new full length album, right?
Simon: Right own ma' man! Tis' done! Getting mastered as we speak!
Rocket: What exactly can we expect from the new material? Is it going to be heavier and more thrashy then your past demos?
Simon: Just as heavy, just as thrashy. The new stuff DEF has more presence, more GIRTH, and a new found clarity.
Rocket: Haha.. you said 'Girth'. Sorry, I couldn't help it! Haha! And is it releasing next month? Where can people go purchase it? It'll be available in local stores and online, right?
Simon: Yep! Out in Aug. Available everywhere online and in local retailers.
Rocket: Who produced the new album?
Simon: Kevin McNoldy out of Orlando, FL.
Rocket: What studio did you use to produce it and how long was the whole process overall?
Simon: Production was an ongoing thing, you know? About 6 months total. Studio is Crystalphonics in Charlottesville, Va.
Rocket: Right on. Big question, are you going to be doing any guitar solos on any of the new songs? I hope to hell you are. It's time for you to start laying down the law!
Simon: The guitars are always solo, man....It's jus' me...HAHAAAAA!
Rocket: I set myself up for that one, didn't I? Haha! You so rule with the 'Sass'. I love that about you! All right, let me compose myself after that. Haha. Is there a title yet for the album?
Simon: "Moment of Violence".
Rocket: So I know Lofat has just released a video for the song 'Roaches', that's available on your MySpace page. Man, I think it's really killer. How much fun did you have shooting that? You guys seem like you had a cool time doing it... or was it more tedious and a pain in the ass?
Simon: That was a new experience, man. And I gotta tell yah, I highly recommend it to all. Very cool!
Rocket: How has the fan reaction been so far on the video?
Simon: I haven't had any complaints. Everyone seems to like it.
Rocket: So tell me, how's your most recent touring been going? Any past shows that just blew you away, in terms of audience reaction or participation?
Simon: I fuckin love touring! All shows have been great. Audiences look so different in each town ya know? But they all GIT' FAT! Gotta love dem' PITS!
Rocket: Who are some of the other underground metal acts on your scene that you've been digging on?
Simon: Welp, to name a few: All Has Fallen, Download, Endchain and St. Diablo.
Rocket: Hey, what's been your favorite metal album so far for 2006?
Simon: "Slot yet to be filled" ...still lookin. Ask me after the new Slayer album comes out.
Rocket: It has been a pretty slow year, hasn't it? What are a few of the upcoming Lofat shows we need to be aware of?
Simon: Headbangers Bash (VA) 8.13
Coyotes (DE) 8.18.06
Va. Beach Metal Fest (VA) 9.17
Bronze Eagle (Pa.) 10.21
...dates added daily.
Rocket: Thanks for taking the time out with me on this, Simon. Always great to chill with you. Give a shoutout to your biggest supporters.
