"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Interview With Killing Of Mind's Tony D'Orazio

Formed in 2002, Santa Rosa, California's Killing Of Mind consists of Paul Nieblas on vocals, Niall Mulcahy on drums, Russell Mederios on guitar/vocals and Tony D'Orazio rounds out the talented lineup on bass/backup vocals. They have been playing their local scene hard and steady, making a big splash now on Myspace and generally seem to be moving in the right direction. Citing key influences such as Unearth, 3 inches of blood, Killswitch Engage and Soil Work, Killing Of Mind has a tight grasp on working hard at defining their music right now and really have all the potential in the world to make it far in the music game. I recently got in front of their bass player, Tony D'Orazio to learn more.

Rocket: Are you originally from Santa Rosa?

Tony: No, I was born in San Bruno, CA.. I've lived in Santa Rosa for the last 20 years.

Rocket: When did you first start playing the bass guitar?

Tony: I started playing bass about 7 years ago.

Rocket: Right on. Who are a few of your biggest bass playing influences?

Tony: MIKE D from Killswitch Engage, and Clint Norris from As I Lay Dying!! Those guys are sick as hell!!

Rocket: They can lay it down for certain. What kind of basses are you playing on?

Tony: I have 2 bass guitars right now!

1. Fernandez four-string- GRAVITY 4 DELUXE/BLACK!!!

2. Signature Tom Aryou four-string

Rocket: What kind of amp rig?

Tony: I use an AMPEG pre-amp, with a NADY power-amp.. My cab is a 4-12 BASSON!! On the floor, I have my Sure wireless/Bose-Distortion/Bose-Digital Delay/Bose-Noise Suppresser, and the sexy digital tuner!!

Rocket: Sounds killer. Do you play with a pick or your fingers?

Tony: I play with a pick. I believe I get a fucking ballzy sound with a pick!

Rocket: Yeah, sure it can be achieved that way. How does the songwriting process work exactly for Killing of Mind? I know as a bass player myself, that many times that song came from a bass line I was jamming on.

Tony: I actually mess around on my guitar before I bring something to my bass.

Rocket: Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue does that. Seems to be a solid way of doing things. Ha! so who are some of the other un-signed Santa Rosa metal bands that you've seen live or played with that have earned your respect?

Tony: Exposure, and Boston Auto... both bands are broken up, but I believe they were very good with what they did!

Rocket: Man, I tell yeah... bands come ad go ike the breeze. What's your favorite metal album for 2006 so far?

Tony: Inflames: Come Clarity.

Rocket: Yeah, that is a popular one this year. What are some of you upcoming shows that we need to be aware of?

Tony: June 28th at the last day saloon in santa rosa!! more info on@ www.myspace.com/killingofmind.net

Rocket: Listen, thank so much for taking time out with me. Give a shout out to your biggest supporters.

Tony: THE VP's!!!!, Paul, Russell, Niall!! Much love to others! You know who you are!
