Pork Pie And Gorillas: Kane Of Fall To Grace
Fall To Grace out of Los Angeles, California has quickly started the big climb to the top of the metal heap and doesn't seem to be letting up soon. This is a band that sidesteps playing down the extreme and instead plays up the beauty of a well-written song. I rarely find myself ever listening to a band that is frankly way too far from the brutal path, but I will be the first one to stand and defend the honor and accomplishment in the art that Fall To Grace is presenting to the music world. I went to their drummer, Kari Kane, in attempt to get into the mechanics of this impressive metal unit.
Rocket: Run us down a bit on your drumming background, bro. I know you're actually one of the busier Los Angeles-area Rock drummers. When did you get your first drum kit and did you ever take lessons when you got started?
Kane: I learned to play from mountain gorillas in the deepest African congo!!
Rocket: Alrighty then. Name some of the drummers past or present that have helped shape your own playing style?
Kane: Gong-Gong The Alpha Gorilla from my group in the congo! With respect to John Bonham, Tommy Lee, Walter Earl and Daniel Svensson. Cats like that!!
Rocket: Cats, got yah. At least we're off them gorillas for the time being. Ha! So how did your joining Fall To Grace come about exactly?
Kane: They cried and begged like bitches until I agreed to join!
Rocket: Give us the specs on your current drum kit.
Kane: The kit I use with FTG is all Pork Pie. Well, all my kits are Pork Pie. But the new kit is a 26" kick with one 12" up and 14" 16" down. With a 14"x7" snare. I am endorsed by Pork Pie, so I have to say Pork Pie as many times as possible. All cymbals are Zildjian, another friendly endorser. Giant ride, four huge crashes, two china's, hats of course, and a splash for the ladies. DW hardware and 9002 double pedal! Vic Firth sticks, another endorsement and Coffin Cases, who, yes, endorse me as well. If I mention endorsements it makes me feel important. Pork Pie, Pork Pie!!
Rocket: What's your opinion of signing to a strong indie record label versus a major?
Kane: I have no opinion on this matter. I'm a drummer, man. I'm too dumb to know the difference!
Rocket: Maybe the Gorilla comment earlier shoulda clued me in on this one. My bads. Ha! So what's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you on stage?
Kane: Naughty time with the ladies during guitar solos. Always fun!!
Rocket: Haha... well, at least that answer didn't include more gorillas. What was your favorite metal album for 2005?
Kane: This is a 2006 record but it's so good it covers both years for me. In Flames - Come Clarity.
Rocket: I read the other day off your MySpace profile blog that you jammed back in February of this year with Billy Duffy from The Cult. That has to be pretty tough on the old performance nerves. Even for such a pro as yourself. This is one of the most underrated and important hard rocks acts in the past twenty years. Give us the details.
Kane: I got a call from Billy to come out and jam with a possibility of joining the tour. We played. I salivated, but Tempesta ultimately got the gig. Tempesta is amazing! Who better to lose to? The tour ended up lasting longer than it was supposed to, and FTG is a priority for me, so in that respect I'm glad I'm here doing my sessions and being available for my boys in FTG!
Rocket: What's the one piece of advice you'd give an upcoming Rock drummer?
Kane: Naughty time with the ladies during guitar solos!
Rocket: Haha... damn, you are killing me over here. Now on a serious note, I know you're married and are a parent. What are you going to say to your kid if and when the time comes that the music bug bites them in the ass too? Will you discourage them or support their dream?
Kane: Encourage while I discourage!
Rocket: Do you actually take time to answer your fan mail on MySpace?
Kane: Always. I mean if there were any I would!
Rocket: Haha... what's the next show for Fall To Grace that we should be watching out for?
Kane: Vegas... Clubbers Ball with your favorite Rob Zombie!!
Rocket: Right on, well maybe FTG will get lucky and he'll put you cats in his next movie! Hahaha. Well, listen up, gorilla man. Thanks again for rocking it out with me here. Go ahead and throw out them drum sticks to the crowd and let everyone know who your biggest supporters are.
Kane: In all seriousness, I wouldn't be here without the love and support of my wife and daughter. Of course The Hair God! The Todd. To all the people who ever gave a shit or listened to the things I played. Thank you soooo much and to all the people who listen to FTG. The boys in FTG and The Snooch. Thanks to Bill, Dom and the gang at Pork Pie. Kirsten and Ryan at Zildjian. Marco at Vic Firth and Mark at Coffin Case. And of course, to you Rocket! You are the supreme King of underground metal!!
