Avenged Sevenfold Want Out Of 'Teeny Magazines' And To Be Considered A Heavy Metal Band

MTV.com reports: M. Shadows wants to set the record straight so there's no confusion: Avenged Sevenfold are a heavy metal band.
The platinum-grilled frontman said that although topping the "TRL" countdown drove sales of the band's 2005 album, City of Evil, past the 560,000-sold mark, he wants to make sure "the perception of Avenged Sevenfold doesn't get twisted in the wrong light."
"When you go to our live show, it's a full-on heavy metal show, and we don't need — I mean, no offense to 10-year-old and 11-year-old little girls, [but] they're not going to understand the experience," he said.
The clip for the first single, "Bat Country," spent more than a week as the "TRL" audience's top pick. "We want our shows to be respectable heavy metal shows. We're a rock and roll band, and we want kids to know that."
So when it came time to release the record's second single, the band went with the more acerbic "Beast and the Harlot" to separate the wheat from the chafe.
"With 'Beast and the Harlot,' we wanted kids to know that this record isn't driven towards 'TRL,' " Shadows said. "It's a rock record. This is what Avenged Sevenfold is about. It's not a radio-driven band. This next single's more for the fans, more for the kids that get the record, and get the whole record — not just the poppy chorus and the Hunter S. Thompson thing, and that's all we care about this band for. The quicker you can get rid of those people, the better. I think going with 'Beast' was more of us trying to solidify our career and not throw it down the drain by being in a bunch of teeny magazines. We don't belong there. That kind of scared us a bit, and I think it's smart to push back and deliver a real rock single next."
Avenged, who launched a 26-date co-headlining tour with Coheed and Cambria on Friday night in Poughkeepsie, New York, will look to augment their metal cred this summer with a little help from Metallica and Guns N' Roses.
On opening for Metallica and Guns N' Roses, M. Shadows commented: "I'm not nervous at all [about opening for both bands]. I feel we're the ones that are going to come up and take those bands' place when they're not doing it anymore. I'm so confident with our live show that I think it's going to be great. I don't expect all those fans to be like, 'Oh my God! We love this.' I know what happens when you open for bands like this. If you open for a band like Slayer, everyone's going to chant 'Slayer, Slayer' during your set."

i think that A7X are realizing that they made a sh**ty album. waking the fallen was 10 times better than city of evil. and they are probably realizing that they did make an album for the masses and the better part of their musicianship is getting to them and they want to play metal. i am very interested to hear what their next album will sound like. im guessing it will be more like waking the fallen

that's part of the deal if you're the new big thing on mtv and choose to create such a gimmicky kind of image, you become teen idols. if you want out, all you have to do is make an album like st. anger that both metalheads and mtv hate.
i agree, and have been saying this for a while now, the vocals suck but the guitarists are the sh**. There are bad a$$ harmonies between those two guys and as much as I hate the song "Bat Country" the little dueling guitar solo is awesome. And thier live show isn't all bad. I went to see cKy and stuck around for the first two A7X songs and it looked like it might be a good show, i just didnt feel like stcking around. They had lotsa props and had a lot of energy but if I heard bat country one more time i'd probably blow my brains out, and of course the lead singer ga ga ga grill irritates me. fag. basic summary - A7X music good - singer bad.

i'd say only about 1/4 of the audience were teenagers or younger. the rest were straight up f***ing
metalheads. many a slayer shirt at that show. they are f***ing heavy live whether you like them or not. if you don't like them, cool, but after seeing everybody from cannibal corpse to f***ing bob dylan in concert, a7x is gonna definitely be big. i do think it's a little presumptuous for them to put themselves on metallica's level, though. it is a smart career move to play the game long enough to build a name and a fan base. then you have money...and creative freedom! as a musician, that's the ultimate dream of a career.

Yeah Voi-lence were average. Dark Angel - Now there's a f***ing under-rated thrash band. Watchtower anyone? Exodus were pretty big but I have yet to meet some-one who truly recognises the brilliance of "Bonded By Blood".

Jeff4hb I really hate to break it to you but I never saide I did not like A7X.I saide they were highly over rated.There whole sound is a hodge podge of old 80's music rangeing from Van Halen to L.A.GUNNS.Don't have a problem with this myself but like Coheed & Cambria(who I can't stand) they do not have much of a sound of their own.If it was not for the whiney nasally sound of the lead singer's voice you probably would not know who they were when you hear them.And last but not least ........... I'll say this: At 29, I'm beginning to get a little sick of washed up metal folk who simply continue to rot like old farts! Athough Avenge are NOT even close to the greats, they're a hell of a lot better than most from this new generation... could certainly do without those vocals, and that flaming pop punk act---but without the whole thing as it is they'd just be another dead-end bar band. What band are you in? The kids are what matters (the older ones anyway, and they eat it up like p***y.) Their guitars, drummer, and songwriting is unique as hell. Watch out, geezers, cuz this might be the future, like it or not!

Lets see, if anyone saw the Metal Hammer edition of Avended sevenfold, then you would know they are a bunch of fa**ots. If you have heard ANY song off the last album, you would know they suck a$$ as a band. And you want REAL metal ALL round? vocals, guitars, drums and what not, then Chimaira self titled is the way to go. But Avenged Sevenfold can eat my a$$ with a spoon until they ADMIT they sold out
A7X must not be appreciating the fans that they actually have- It's pretty pathetic when you actually have to come out and say that 'little girls would not understand the expirience.' A7X should get a clue-when you're on TRL for a week at #1, then you must have a "radio-driven sound" that appeals to the masses of "10 and 11 year old girls".
I actually hope that A7X and Slayer do a concert together, so in the mosh pit, I can beat A7X's fans.

He likes Mettalica and alot of other styles. He likes Avenged, but he can sit down with his dad and point out the actual musical / compositional styles of each band and why he likes this or doesn't care for that.

I enjoyed Avenged, for the same reason my 15 year old Strat player did. You could actually HEAR the damn words, every other song didn't have the same drum beat; the same tonic-sub dominant-dominant chord structure; there was actually an attempt to do some decent harmonizing on the vocals; and they have been trying new ideas in their music. It was metal to me, just more arranged, involving more practice time, and OH MY GOD they did a slow song. How "Faggy", right?
I think I understand fully now, why the HI-FI Buys amphitheater made

I find it hilarious that you call us "musically ignorant hypocrites" Lock and Load, when you your self have obviously only a basic knowledge of the metal scene.
If you did you would a) See that Avenged Sevenfold play nothing but rehashed metalcore riffs, and melodic cliches stolen from what At The Gates mastered 11 years ago. Their unoriginality is staggering.
and b) Maybe seminal metal bands had the problem of "every other song didn't have the same drum beat; the same tonic-sub dominant-dominant chord structure; " but largely you are ignorant to the technical mastery of most metal bands - Watchtower, Cynic, Necrophagist, latter Emperor and Death, Cryptopsy, Nile, Spiral Architect, Symphony X - The list goes on.

Lock and Load post have been the most constructive post I have read here in a while. Kudos for that. I have to agree in one thing with the man, I don't care about the image of a band to me personally is bullsh** as long as I FOUND the music plausible.
I can see a death metal band looking like some KISS steroid vikings I might think they look sort of cool (if not funny) but if the music is nothing more than terrible noise with no sort of rhytim I quickly move on to another band or artist. Many peogle get stuck in this image that rock bands or whatever generalization sub division of metal kids keep comin up with, are supposed to have a certain baddass image for them to look up to. Now I'm not saying or naming anybody here.
Oh and Lock and Load dude you are always going to get bash by everyone on the internet anywhere. It's funny to see people jump on their high horse and try support their "message" with reasoning or logic in an age-old argument that is purely opinion, all the while condescending to the "little kids". Some people like A7x, some people hate them for their image, some hate them for their music. Either of the latter can result is "so and so is gay" comments. They've probably thought less about the actual gayness of the band than Mr Lock and Load. Being 55 doesn't get you any respect when talking about metal, and neither does quoting Frank Zappa. That and pointing out the simplicity of metal shows a lack of listening to the radio and what music is like today.
I'm all for constructive discussions, but talking down to metalheads or the readers here like that isn't any better than the rest of the comments, IMO. Condescending to heavy metal bands [or fans of] who's lryics you can't understand or don't harmonize is the same as extreme metal-heads calling A7X gay.
I'm with the last few commenters though - image is not important to me. It could have some influence on a band becoming one of my all time favorites if I can't relate to them at all, but the music is what's really important. Understanding the lyrics sung is pretty low on my list. In fact, to a large segment of metal, I'm sure lyrics/vocals in general are low on the list. That's largely why metal is not on the pop charts where nice singing and crap music reigns.
They haven't opened up for SLAYER for no reason. You think if slayer hated them enough they would not let them play with them correct?
They have GODLY drums, double bass chugs in most of their songs, the solos are amazing, the riffs are thrash as hell. Plus they have been a band for almost 7 years now, they used to be more metalcore but their singer threw his voice out thats why he sings like a sh**head.
They ARE metal, even though it sucks that these guys have to wear girls pants and eye liner...

can't believe people are still posting a lot of comments about this.if u f***ers don't give a f*** about A7X then why the f*** do u waste time posting comments about the way they dress.but i'm being hypocritical.i was talking sh** on them too.but reading all this just makes me realize how stupid i sound.the guys in A7X are talented musicians that just wanted to do something different.instead of being just one of the million bands out there that all sound the same.

I'm not compareing them to anyone I like the band ,sort of like I saide I gotta be in the mood to listen.It's not like the disc stay's in my CD changer or anything.I just honestly think they should not be this popular because They are not that f***ing good.If it was not for the frigging music industry trying to be on the cutting edge of the new trend's as alway's they probably would not have changed there style.(I believe you were the one that pointed out there previous punk history).The more melodic and possibly HAIR METAL STUFF (god forbid)Is slowly but surely gaining popularity againe.POISON'S GREATEST HIT's is selling so well.Do you really think it's a bunch of 30 something's buying it exclusively ? All I really know is this... I don't think I've EVER seen a band try as hard as they do to appear cool... and yet they FAIL so miserably at it! I mean, just look at their NAMES!!! M. Shandows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance!!!! Holy sh**... those are the gayest names I HAVE EVER HEARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I sat up all night trying to think of the most homosexual names in the world, I couldn't possibly do any better than that!!!! f***!!!

Just by readying everybodies comments, I have come to the conclusion that none of you know what you are talking about. All of you are the real posers who think they are musicians. You guys dont know sh** about music if you are bashing on A7X. You're a bunch of idiots. Me being a musician myself for 13 years and graduated from San Fransisco's Musical Art School know exactly what im talking about, and i know exactly what Avenged Sevenfold is playing. I know all the musical theories they are playing, the drum time scales, the overlapping harmony voice patterns with a guitar solo at the same time using scales that Gates has created through his passion of an evil sound. You kids don't know what your talking about. Just the fact that you talk about how they dress is hilarious. Most of you can only play their music. My Grandma can cover a song too. 95% of you don't even know which musical theory their using, you dont even know what scales their playing, you dont even know the difficulty level, you dont even understand the talent of this band, so i suggest all you kids shut the f*** up because all the bands you kids listen to are nowhere near as talented as A7X,,,TRUST ME
A friend of mine has one of their cd's can't remember which;. All I can really say about this band is TECHNICALLY, yes, they are heavy metal. They break a lot of rules in the way they present themselves, and the pop hooks in their melodies added, they aren't very much in the spirit of metal, but they are metal. They use too much theory to be called either punk or pop punk. The songs are, however, well written. Guitar work is good, very good at times. Their sense of melody is sufficient, not amazing, but they use skips enough to show that they actually thought about them.
Their sense of harmony is much more than sufficient, and that is their strong point. The way they play, I'd say they have a mix of european power metal and american power metal, more european, but using scales more in line with rock (believe it or not, metal is not a type of rock), and pop. Avenged Sevenfold is a blasphemy, but I must admit that it is an intelligent and thought out one.

If they are so good & we don't know what we are talking about.Let me ask you this.How do they compare to say DOKKEN or WHITE SNAKE or even JUDAS PRIEST & IRON MAIDEN.You don't have to be a musician to recognize thing's.I have studied music & I am not as accomplished as you claime to be.This does not mean that knowone hear can atleast recognize certaine thing's.I NEVER SAIDE THEY WERE BAD ! The two guitarists are totally insane and i doubt a sh**ty emo band could come up with such amazing riffs, so stop complaining and if u dont like it f*** of and listen to some hip hop bollox.

between those 2 fags and a real metal guitarist in terms of ability.
Trey from Morbid Angel would eat both those guys for lunch or i don't
know Alexi Laiho or maybe Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman could brush
off their nutsacks for one second and have more talent musically than
those frauds that try to pose as metal musicians. Like i said before
they are metal's (and i using that term very loosely) answer to 98 Degrees.
