Did Heavy Metal Music Drive Trinidad & Tobago Man To Commit Murder?

Imran Ali of the Trinidad & Tobago Express has issued the following report:
Marcus Daniel (photo), a 28- year-old Diego Martin, Trinidad & Tobago mechanic, grabbed headlines last week when he was convicted of murdering his teenaged cousin. In his defence, he claimed he was high on drugs and possessed by a demon planted in him by hardcore rock music.
It was the first time that such a defence had been mounted in a local court, but the issue of the influence of rock music on impressionable minds has gained prominence in other shores, where-according to some-these devilish lyrics had led to even more sadistic crimes.
Marcus Daniel found himself at the age of 14 in this world. At his trial, he said he had already dropped out of school and began listening to rap music and "soft" rock songs.
Soon enough, he said, he started drinking rum and his taste in music veered to the hardcore.
Rock music became his favourite and he developed a taste for a particular genre known as black metal — typified by SLIPKNOT's music.
Although the jury found this no excuse, Daniel allowed this music to dominate his life. He painted his room black and plastered it with pictures of demons, tombstones, skeletons and dark metal bands including MARILYN MANSON.
He said the music would make him lose control to the point where he would go on violent rampages. He tattooed himself with various symbols he believed to represent the Antichrist and lost his faith in God.
It was all these factors, he said, that skewed his judgment so much that he stabbed his cousin, 16-year-old Suzette Gibson, to death. This was the cousin whom he was closest to and would go out often with.
But not even science is agreed that listening to certain types of music on their own can encourage anti-social behaviour in a receptive audience. All the leading studies seem to show that these lyrics-whether contained in rock, rap, dancehall or soca-can do is to make a listener more predisposed to aggressive behaviour.
In his 1997 testimony before a Senate Subcommittee in Columbia, Dr Frank Palumbo — representing the American Academy of Pediatrics — spoke about the social impact of music violence.
"Make no mistake about it, music can summon a range of emotions, most of which are wonderful. Yet there is some music that communicates potentially harmful health messages, especially when it reaches a vulnerable audience," he said.
He made a number of recommendations which included urging the music video to portray more "positive themes" in videos including racial harmony, drug avoidance, nonviolence and good sexual health practices.
Dr Palumbo also urged that music artists should serve as positive role models for children and that parents should take an active role in monitoring the music their children listen to and the videos they watch.
"Ultimately, it is the parent's responsibility to monitor what their children listen to and view," he stated.
When she address the jury on her client's behalf last week, Pamela Elder SC indicated that society had failed Marcus Daniel and that he was not totally to blame for what he did.
"Where were the social workers when he dropped out of school at the age of 14 and began drinking rum? Where were his parents and extended family when he started using drugs and decorated his room with symbols of the Antichrist?" she asked.
Could more have been done to help Marcus Daniel and others like him?
Was he really a victim of circumstance? Clearly the 12 jurors who heard his trial found that while music had the power to make someone shake his waist, it was not enough to make him kill.

I just don't even know what to say to that. A wide range of emotions flood my mind all at once from laughter to anger to "why bother, these idiots will never get it". Why is music even an issue when the kid was high at the time?
Then they round it up with "Ultimately, it is the parent's responsibility to monitor what their children listen to and view." Again, no mention of drugs. Just music. I am just at a loss for words. If I were in that court room, I'd be likely to kill someone. And they'd blame it on the metal music, of course.

Societies strange fascination with the elusive SCAPEGOAT.Recently a friend of mine put another friend in the hospital for sleeping with his girlfriend.Whose to blame for this ? Could it possibly be their mutual love of the wacky weed , perhaps it was the fact that friend A works alot and thierfore may not have been around enough to meet her need's ? Then againe it could be the simple fact that friend A is an EMINEM fan.Or perhapse it could be the fact that someone attempted to turn a HO into a housewife(Ho's don't act right) inspite of what he knew and was told by people who knew from experience. The point is you cannot blame outside factor's for someones actions.Stupid is stupid Crazy is CRAZY ! Call it what it is and we will finally take that next big step to a utopian society.

I think we can safely say, in the defense of music of all kinds, that, throughout the course of history, religion has killed a few more people than metal. I believe that the individual in this story should be hung by his balls and tortured. If he is guilty of course. Of course, the fact that as soon as you pop out, you begin to be brainwashed, doesnt help the idiot who cant think for himself. Which of course, is pretty much 90% of society. If there were an Antichrist, I would like to see proof. Then, we can send this person down to him for what he has done. Oh yeah, Slipknot sucks. Why would anyone claim to listen to them. LOL.

Ignorance is bliss. Thats the moral of this story and every other story like it.
It's easier for music to take the fall when a strange murder occurs.
People don't like the notion that the human mind is a fragile thing, and that some people just snap.
Sure, drugs and alcohal distort reality and yes heavy music can get the adrenaline going....
But how many metal fans are going to stab, shoot or rape someone while blasting some Priest, Hatebreed or Pantera?....Not f***ing many or this world would be a desolate wasteland.....
Noone ever tries to connect a murderer to his music if he likes Elton John or Jessica Simpson....
It's too mainstream. --TOO MANY-- people listen to it therefore the guy was crazy and his music taste is exempt. But if it's music thats a bit left of the center people feel OK making a scapegoat out of it, for the very fact that it's on the margins it must be suspect.....
It's f***ing pathetic witch hunt bullsh**.

Well, this crap happens all the time. I am used to it, not really offended when people say stupid things
like metal causing murder. What I am p***ed about is that if they are going to talk about metal, give
at least SOME correct information. Such as... S h i t s n o t is NOT black metal, not that black metal is
THAT much better on average. Something about the more evil you are, the worse your black metal must be.
And f***in' SHUT UP about Marilyn Manson. At least he's a footnote rather than the whole of the blame
the less we hear about him, the better we all are... including him.

For f*ck sakes this is bull sh** why do they even bother. dumb asses like him should be put behind bars indefinitly. well for him saying slipknot is black metal give us a f***in brake for that he should get 20 years alone. manson is not dark metal, he is gothic rock at best well its not the first time hes been in this bull sh** before. so to Marcus Daniel do us a favor and comit suicide!!

Yay for the jurors seeing some of the truth.
People get so much f***ing dumber each time around. It seems there's one of these goddamn stories every other f***ing week. Most of the people here are right...they will never get it. Nor should they. Anybody this f***ing stupid doesn't deserve to see what we see, and how we see it.
Finally...Slipknot being pegged as black metal. That's very funny. The next thing you know, people will assume they know everything about metal...

I listen to bands like Darkthrone, Slayer, Mayhem, etc........all the time. And I have a 9 year old daughter. Saying that because of the music you did such a horrible thing makes you the lowliest of all bastards. And the fact that they consider Slipknot black metal, well thats a joke and a half right there. Which is what is truly funny. Slipknot=black metal...Mayhem (which I shouldn't have to remind any of you metal heads what these guys are about, however much I love there music)=not quite as black metal.

this is so funny...what an idiot...just think he left his life cuz of a song...a metal one...why couldn't he kill himself after listening to tobey keith or britney spears or somesh**...that would freak the hell out of country and pop people..."kid kills himself after listening to britney spears"

Ignorance IS blessed. It's likely upper tier Christian fanatics privately believe the same.
People never cease to amaze/amuse me with regards to how veiw the world, and while I'm not above making ignorant comments myself from time to time I at least make an attempt to justify where I stand.
Most people just say "Korn rules!" "You suck", "ur a fag yo!" and never substantiate it....That kind of posting just lead to a thread thats burnt from flame wars....

there is something to what these people who come up with the theories that heavy music caused his behaviour. look at just about any single post on this site and you will find people arguing, threatening and whatnot. there is something that for the most part, people who listen to heavy music can be more agressive and yes maybe even angrier. altho i am not sayin that his musical tastes had anything to do with the murder, because that is just bullsh**. however, there is a concrete link from our tastes in music to our behavoirs. typify any type of music and the people who listen to it, and you will find a link. people who listen to bubblegum pop are the type that would never hurt a fly, people who listen to rap are gonna try to act like they are "from the hood". but its complete bullshiiit to blame murders on music. thats ridiculous. we all just need to bo cognisent of our behavior and not let it get the best of us, because we are all trying to put up a front for others in our own groups, no matter what you say

Again? We have already told about people who kill other people "because of the music they listen". That's just s h i t vehiculated by the people who don't listen to this music, otherwise they will know the truth about it. For me, he just has a problem in his mind and he listened in a "bad way" to this music. Or he was just a weaky person, badly influated, but then he has to be very weak. So my conclusion: kill him and the other stupid idiots who always blame metal. Blame country or indie-rock, but not metal. The question is: if he had listened to another lmusic, wouldn't he have commit this crime ??
Let's test it!

LOf***INGL Wait hold up ... Knot .... black metal ... WTF ... and manson ... black metal ... i find that f***ing hilarious.
I have no sypathy for this moron ... he killed his cousin ... over slipknot .... and manson ... its like when manson got blaimed for the whole columbine shooting ... he has become the poster boy for kids acting idiotically.
They need to stop blaiming music for teen violence and they need to take the resposibility for their own actions.

post 24 i am right here man, sry havent been on in a few days, had to make sure my girlfriend was "satisfied". but anyway, this is total f***ing bullsh**!! the guy had a brain problem. sure i do feel more aggressive when listening to Slipknot and Tallica, but that doesnt make me want to kill someone, it just pumps me up, keeps me going and i get that happy feeling that most metal heads get when listen to some excellent thrash or Nu Metal. this guy is just screwed up and i am thankful that it didnt turn into another case like judas priest in the 80s. if the jury hadnt seen through the bullsh** i would have gone down there and slapped all of them for being stupid. and while we're at it, why dont we talk about rap. anyone here notice that since rap has hit mainstream it hasnt got any bad reps even tho almost all rap glorifies violence, pimping and the "gangsta" (ignorant and lazy) way of life. just chew on that for a while.
