Heavy Metal Rules, Metalsucks Sucks

Metalsucks published an article last week that essentially questions why Vegard Sverre “Ihsahn” Tveitan, the ringleader of black metal legends Emperor, would continue to work with some of his bandmates who were involved with the criminal activity of the notorious Norwegian scene in the early ’90s. The article’s author(s) discuss the often referenced arson of churches that guitarist Tomas Thormodsæter “Samoth” Haugen was involved with and convicted for as well as former drummer Bård Guldvik ‘Faust’ Eithun’s murder conviction, erroneously referring to the latter act as bigoted in nature by jumping to a conclusion based upon assumption. Additionally, in a separate Metalsucks article published in 2017, one of the site’s editors/writers, Axl Rosenberg, wrote, “Yes, Bård Guldvik ‘Faust’ Eithun murdered a gay man, Magne Andreassen, who allegedly propositioned him (not that propositioning Eithun would make Andreassen’s murder okay, obviously — but to hear Eithun tell it, it’s the reason for his homicidal act).” Rosenberg later added that he speaks “for both Vince and myself when I say that we won’t give Emperor a free pass any longer.”

At press time, I was unable to verify whether or not Metalsucks’ editors/writers actually wear superhero capes.

The problem with Metalsucks’ claim is that they provide no evidence suggesting that the act was motivated by homophobia. It is conjecture. In these two instances, and this appears to be a recurring problem with the website, Metalsucks prove themselves to be sloppy at best and disingenuous at worst. Eithun was quoted as using a homophobic slur in Lords of Chaos, a 1998 book that he described—upon my request for this article—as one including “a vortex of bad statements, misquotes and still youth gone wild out-eviling each other.”

Today, Eithun is quick to dismiss any suggestion that his regrettable actions had anything to do with hate crime. “I was never homophobic. I was born and raised in a home where I learned to respect women and everyone regardless of skin colour and always to defend the weak. What I did was a result of a troublesome childhood; I had no job or education, so I didn't`t really see a future for myself. And on top of that, all moral standards around the Helvete scene went out of the window. I am not saying that this makes my crime better in any way, but I never was a homophobe. I have friends today that are gay and I couldn’t care less.”

Looking back at what happened, Eithun was visiting his family in the city at which the Winter Olympic Games took place a couple of years later. After leaving a pub and walking through the Olympic park in the summer of 1992 in Lillehammer, Norway, he encountered Andreassen who propositioned him, according to Eithun. He followed Andreassen into a forest outside of Lillehammer where he stabbed him dozens of times before repeatedly kicking him in the head. Eithun was later imprisoned and served almost nine and a half years for his crime. His actions were unquestionably unjustifiable and inexcusable. A man’s life was cut short unnecessarily.

As undeniably deplorable as the act itself was, attempts to properly engage in media analysis and critique require that focus at times needs to turn from understandable value-laden judgments of content toward the form and presentation of said content. And on a fundamental level, if we are to have any faith whatsoever in journalism or any form of historical documentation, factual accuracy is mandatory. Metalsucks misses the mark yet again.

The demographic background of any victim is a logical point of inquiry as to a perpetrator’s motives since hate crimes are all-too real, but Metalsucks jumped to their conclusion. During an interview that I conducted with Eithun in 2007 for Unrestrained! Magazine for a feature on his band Blood Tsunami, Eithun expressed remorse for his actions—something Metalsucks incorrectly claims has never happened. He went on to state that the prospect of seclusion with someone is what opened the door for him to commit the heinous crime that day. Seclusion was opportunity. Rage and an inclination toward violence were the causal factors, not homophobic impulse.

As an exclusively op-ed driven site, we can obviously expect Metalsucks to express themselves. But no one should accept the website’s increasingly evident sloppiness in reporting. Worse than being guilty of questionable, agenda-based historical revisionism, Metalsucks is simply guilty of spouting factual inaccuracy. Aside from the aforementioned instances, they’ve recently accused Taake of being nazis. While none of the musicians being discussed in this article are likely to ever be in line for sainthood, Taake’s one-time, foolish, GG-Allin-like use of a swastika to be provocational, an act the band has since publicly apologized for, doesn’t mean its members are nazis, nor do the act’s anti-Islamic lyrics. While an anti-Islamic perspective can go hand-in-hand with racism, that isn’t unequivocally the case. There are numerous reasons justifying one’s criticism of a religion that has fostered, coming full circle, rampant homophobia and sexism. Who knows what Taake’s motivations were for penning those lyrics? Metalsucks doesn’t, but they pretend that they do. Metalsucks is increasingly disseminating flawed information via shoddy, sensationalistic, clickbait-hungry presentation that’s habitually filtered through clouded bias rendering them an unreliable source for those expecting factual accuracy in reporting.

Metal doesn’t suck, but Metalsucks sure as hell does.

Those of us wanting to see clickbait sites like Metalsucks become less relevant need to stop clicking the hyperlinks. They thrive and survive from clicks. I caved in a handful of times the last couple of months, but the best approach to dealing with them is to ignore them altogether. Alternatively, to minimize the revenue-generating clicks they receive, if curiosity does get best of you, go to archive sites like archive.is and use the second box available at the bottom of the page labeled “I want to search the archive for saved snapshots” and enter the website’s main URL (web address).

I have hated that f***ing site from it's over the top leftist views, constant condemning of who "is/isn't" approved by them, and d***weed writers who are "unholy than thou" and complete Op-ed style journalism. Where the hell has journalism gone! Blabbermouth.net - you get no free pass either, garbage of a click bait site.

Honestly, I always thought all the major metal sites were one in the same (ownership), but you MU leaves the majority of the "political" BS out of it, so this is been my main home for metal news and will continue to be. Keep it up guys/gals!!!

Only complaint of late for MU......Posts are getting extremely late in the day, maybe it's best to write it the night before and post in the morning so more people are seeing them. Anywho, great site, miss Xfiruath, but all things come to end, right? DOWN w Metalsucks / Blabbermouth "elitists" who think they know metal.

Not that I disagree (it's all in the name, right?), but...

isn't it a bit - no, wait - yes. It is. It is awfully, awkwardly tacky as a news source to attack an alternative news source like this.

Again, you're not wrong.

But this looks reeeeaaaaaaaally unprofessional, guys.

Attack the article, and let that speak for itself. The readers know.

I don't consider MS or BM reputable by any stretch of the imagination, and I agree with Psythe, take this $hit down.

Comment #2, our European news contributor is on tour, which is why we have had fewer posts overall and don't have any early posts lately.

Psythe and Blindgreed, my first instinct was agreement with your points as a general principle. But I read the article on another publication before they took it down and thought it was well researched and and full of valid points, which is why I decided to publish it when Jay approached me about it. It also mirrors my own (and many others') views about clickbait and bad reporting in general on that site. In the end, it's an op-ed. I could say it doesn't reflect our official views, but it pretty much does reflect mine, with more effort than I'd personally be willing to spend on it. I'm glad Jay spent the time to write a well supported piece though.

I'm totally on board with the whole click bait deal, and while I do agree with the views on MS and BM, I always consider the mighty MU above the cut ethically and this piece does walk the line ethically. I'm happy to hear that you did evaluate it first though and if after your evaluation you are okay with the piece then everything is right as rain. Thanks for taking the time to respond DB. Cheers.

I just returned from Inferno Fest in Norway and after meeting and speaking with several Norwegian, plus metalheads from all over the world that attended this festival, they could give a f*** less about Metalsucks or any American based music blogs for that sake. The United States metal scene has recently become a joke in their eyes with all the rash of show/tour cancellations in addition to the social justice warrior syndrome that is now an epidemic among metal circles. I'll be adding more to this in my show report for Inferno Fest.

Well Greek, to begin with, the US doesn't have ANY festivals worth a fvck and I don't think anyone in Norway has ever given a single fvck about metal from anywhere other than Norway (except maybe the Swiss, they love to hack on the Swiss).

Blindgreed, I can't ague with that. MDF and the emergence of Psycho are the only ones worth mentioning, but they don't hold a candle to European festivals. It's funny, I've been flamed for stating that before but usually from those that have never been out of the States in their life.

This article seems really out of place and whiney. Makes MU seem petty and desperate for readers. I dont care about the short comings of the competition, I'm here for news on bands.

There's too much bullsh** everywhere in the media the way it is, and this tripe just adds to that. I hate click bait, yet this article screams click bait to me.

I think that MS is an absolute eyesore, a monstrous click bait fueled monster that has gone out of control in it's desperate attempts for revenue. Usually when a site goes this far off the rails, there is an issue. Something is going on behind the scenes that isn't being addressed. Oh, don't worry. I'm sure they plan to write one of two apologies, either going for a "haha, it was just a joke" sentiment, or "well, we were only doing what we thought was right for the scene by kicking Nazi butt." Regardless of what route they take, they are getting more negative attention then they could probably use right now. Sure, bad publicity is still publicity; but when things start to open their way to a potential number of lawsuits, they may wish they had not gone so far as they did. I've already heard from an artist who plans to sue, has contacted his lawyer and is preparing a case. His lawyer claims the case he has is quite strong too, and others will follow suite. Comedy is comedy, but the old "we're just two guys that love metal and love to make jokes about it" spiel is nothing more than an empty excuse for the truly foul things that are occurring here. There is a time for fun and a time for professionalism. There are lines that you do not cross. Their messiah complex needs to come down, and it needs to come down hard. Especially when it's nothing more than ad we all have said, a clickbait hungry facade.
