"some music was meant to stay underground..."

With Passion @ BBkings 05-30-05

On Monday, May 30th I went to see With Passion BBkings in NYC, NY. They were the first opening band for Deicide and Immoation. After first seeing them perform in March with Into Eternity and Amorphis, I knew I was in for an intense show. I also am familiar with their music this time around. Unfortunately I had to leave after this band due to a virus.

Since the last show, they lost their drummer and had a temporary replacement for this tour. Though he was great, the original drummer was more powerful in his delivery of the songs. The lack of power and emotion could be attributed to learning their material in two weeks. Nonetheless he played flawlessly and fit the band well. The sound mix for the show was good, considering they were the opening band. The guitars were hard to hear at certain points during the night, since I stood in front of the vocal monitor.

After each song the crowd got more and more into their style of playing. At first, the expression on the audience’s faces said, “What the hell is this crap.” Towards the end it showed that, “What the hell just happened? That was awesome!” Though the crowd wasn’t moshing much, they definitely clapped more and more as their set went on. I even caught a few people in the front head banging and getting into it. Playing though most of the songs on their new CD, they succeeded in gaining new fans.

The stage presence was insane in comparison to the last time. What really made this time more enjoyable was more energy into the music from the whole band. For example, the guitarists and bassist were head banging with their short hair and doing the same with their bodies. The singer was very in your face. His sweat dripped off his face into the crowd. With consistent improvement live, With Passion is a band that shouldn’t be overlooked.
