Fenriz Feels Grim Just Isn't Enough These Days

Fenriz of Darkthrone doesn’t hesitate to tell you how much of a fan he is of Blue Oyster Cult, in particular, their greatest hit, “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” That influence plays out well on the bands recent record “Arctic Thunder.” "Boreal Fiends" features interesting play on the cow bell.

Fenriz comments,

“Ever since I heard “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” I just knew I needed cow bell in my life. Because I play evil music, pure Norwegian black metal, I’m not always allowed to express my love for this percussive instrument. That is until I started incorporating it into my drum sound in Darkthrone. “Boreal Fiends” has a walloping cow bell to it.

It’s a fun and triumphant song. The guys, well, the guy in the band doesn’t like it because I’m always gyrating my hips to the beat. That’s just what you do when you get outside of the kit, you gyrate your hips like Glenn Danzig or, well, Blue Oyster Cvlt. Since we practice in my laundry room, we don’t have much space, so I’m sure he doesn’t like my hip shakin.’ That’s fine, because I don’t care. I’m going to express myself like Elvis Presley, like Shakira, it’s on, hip shaking is krieg!”
