Soads first album....like many great first albums, captured them while they were still hopeful and hungry......That energy tends to begin its fade on the second and third records.....even if commercial success passes a band by.....

Soad sound "better" in the sense of tweeking their nuances, but they've left behind that "mud and rust" sound of that first album.....which is what made is great......one could easily argue their best record.

They want staying power now....The goal isn't to grab your attention, now that they are as recognized as korn at their peak....the goal is to keep your attention........

BYOB does that i think........It's differnt but very much soad, their not sacrificing their wierdness one bit, the message is still political, strange, emotional, silly or all of the above....

Furthermore their still being bold.....time changes ahoy, adding more of Malakian to the vocal mix...........ill admit i liked his harmonies on 'Toxicity' and his backround squeeks and yips on their debut were priceless....He's really making Malakian of a Down to be honest.....but it still sounds compelling to me....i'll reserve the comments good or great for when i've heard the songs a bit more....as i shun the sh** out of radio.....

as i generally say with something we can't know for sure about........

we'll see.

I think that anyone who seriously considers not being a system fan anymore for what they write now, was never a real system fan to begin with. A real fan changes as the band does, because a fan is someone who loves what they do, not what they were 5 years ago. System is growing up, and maybe you should try and realize that everyone does, and respect that they still stay completely original to what they are. Not just this, but goddamn they've gotten infinitely better than their previous efforts. John learned to use double bass for real, and darron and chavo's chops are tighter and stronger than ever. Their writing and creativity is still seamless. Come on guys, grow up. Just because they were the band you listened to when you were a p***ed off high school kid with acne who hated your parents doesn't mean they're a "dark" band. They had a rougher phase with their first album, but they were never what they're being made out to be.

Personally, I think the 2 new singles are phenomenal. They are still system, but with experience and talent that far surpasses their old stuff. BYOB amps me up the same way toxicity and sugar did, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the stuff. I'm more for a system fan then ever.

And DEADMETAL, it IS a huge step forward. De-wax your ears and you might hear it.

And also, when you say dark, bands like NIN and coal chamber come to mind. That's DARK. System always had the quirky silliness to it. Cigaro to me seems like a perfect blend of their rebellious and crazy roots with their improved creativity. I will agree in saying that they have refined their sound since their self-titled, but that's just what it is. Refined. I bet they will have plenty of darker sounding stuff for you guys on the new discs too.

At the end of the day the new album is lyrically inferior, it relies on metaphors and a lot of people won't pick up on that for whatever reason, there are no killer lines as we saw on the Self-Titled album etc. But, I will say this, I was not at all keen on the album when I first heard it. In fact, I was p***ed off that I seemed to have outgrown SOAD. But I did what a real musicfan would do, and gie it time. I'm not talking lock yourself in a room with it on repeat or anything, but don't be a dumbass and claim you had it figured out in one listen. This album is a grower, lacking the instant hook of the previous albums.

Dead, if you really think, after one listen, you know for a fact that Mesmerize sucks d***, I won't argue with that. What I wanna see is a blow by blow account of why you think each song on that album sucks, and hey, you said yourself it's a short album, so it can't take that long.
