Flotsam And Jetsam Bassist To Singer Eric A.K.: 'Stop Being Such A Colossal Prick'
FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist Jason Ward has slammed the group's vocalist, Eric A.K., for "being such a colossal prick" and not attending a band rehearsal in "almost eight years."
In an April 20 post to the group's message board, A.K. wrote, "I still love FLOTSAM with all my being, but I can't put my life on hold anymore. So I will do as much as I can to keep us in your ears, eyes, and minds. FLOTSAM is still not paying ME anything, but as long as whoever is doing band business is making money, I guess I should lay down and take it. 25 years nothing has changed. Paying someone for making phone calls is stupid. Anyway, the band is not broken up. The new album is kick-ass, and you will hear from us soon. Live shows are really tough to pull off, unless they are in Phoenix. But I will try my best. Thanx for being true hardcore fans."
Writing in response to Eric's statement, Ward posted the following message on Thursday (April 21) to the group's message board:
"Well, I am surely suprised by that last statement. Once again, we can't seem to keep A.K. from communicating to us by any other means than the public one, so ... if that's what you want, man…
"First off, pull your dress up and stop pretending you don't make money in this band. You don't show up unless you do — that is, unless you book a show. In fact, you make as much, and sometimes more [than the rest of us], depending on how much whining is involved. Last record you made as much as we did and then we added a bit more to keep your vehicle running. Do you remember that? Then after months of tour planning, you came here to say your wife won't let you go on tour anymore. To say we lost money and time and some of our dignity to try and save the tour is an understatement when you add the fact that you spent zero time actually rehearsing with us as we wrote 'My God' .
"Not that you are concerned about anyone's life but your own, A.K. You have been calling the shots now because we are left to do whatever it is you feel like doing, and your attitude and loyalty can shift day by day and second by second. In fact, our last show in Phoenix with HATEBREED was set up by you, and the savvy agent that you are, [you] got us a check for zero dollars. I was only informed of this fact 24 hours before the show. So when it is convenient for you, Eric, you can appear to be into this band and unconcerned with dollars and cents. Your potshots at the person who has taken care of these details — most responsibly, I might add — are at the very least childish and above all selfish. I have taken the position of simply playing bass for this band because if I stop to think about the years that have gone by spending a good portion of my time writing, and actualy rehearsing, supporting other bandmembers living in my home at various times, cars I have given away to bandmembers, and compare that to the fact that you have not been to a rehearsal in almost eight years is downright disrespectful to all who have.
"If you now want to drag us all into pity party for you, I will try not to be as offended as I should be, and continue to make music as long as you are man enough to stop being such a colossal prick."
As previously reported, Crash Music, Inc. has set a July 26 release date for the new FLOTSAM AND JETSAM album, entitled "Dreams of Death" (view cover here). The CD was engineered by Tom Giatron and produced by FLOTSAM AND JETSAM and Tom Giatron at Genesis Studios in Phoenix. Travis Smith did the cover art.
FLOTSAM AND JETSAM was formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1984 by bassist Jason Newsted, who eventually left the band to join METALLICA. The group currently consists of A.K., Ward, , Craig Nielsen (drums), Mark Simpson (guitar) and Ed Carlson (guitar).
